Bloomberg reporting that Josh Sawyer will be leading development on a new Fallout game. Avowed 2 cancelled.

New Vegas 2 finally?!?

That one person that preferred Avowed over Fallout is punching the air rn

I have stopped caring for my gamerscore, but like the thought that the roughly 70k I have do reflect the games I wanted to play for enjoyment's sake and not shovelware I bought to make that number bigger. But then again, to each their own.

Overall GS I couldn't care less about, I mean it's cool to have a summary of your xbox career. I guess i'm more of a completionist as I care about getting all the cheevos in the games I like. Like you said tho, to each their own. They need some kinda shovelware tag and their own section tho because shit has gotten crazy.

It's telling that Obsidian did exactly what a lot of gamers suggest the industry as a whole to do (develop a new AA game instead, preferably one that isn't part of a franchise), and it just flopped.

So back to churning out high-budget, low-risk franchise games we go.

ngl I always wanted to try this game lol the videos online were funny af

Yeah I'm not mad at Obsidian being put back onto bigger franchises. I love developers having freedom and creating new things but Avowed just wasn't that interesting and there are worser fates than working on Fallout/Elderscrolls/KOTOR

Now we just need MS to greenlight that Banjo Collection

Basically what was expected when Asha took over. Put an Ax to everything than when everything fails as a result bye bye Xbox. I can assure you it will all fail because a lot of the cuts look like their were made to fail. Nothing Asha is doing looks different from the script within MS so why would anyone believe things are going to change for the best.

Seeing speculation that this new Obsidian Fallout game will be on Unreal 5 because Obsidian devs are already familiar with it and recruiting new hires during development will be easier and faster. That would be a huge mistake though, most of a Fallout games' late life sales legs are due to the strong modding community. Creation Engine modders are rarely familiar with Unreal Engine and Unreal Engine is notoriously difficult for modders to begin with, which is why most Unreal games have few mods. The Unreal Engine game with the most mods is Stellar Blade with 2.7k mods (most of which are outfit mods and reshades, the easiest things to mod), Fallout 3, New Vegas, and 4, have 17.1k, 41.2k, and 74.8k mods respectively, all way more than any Unreal Engine game.

Better to have a small Bethesda team go in and spend a month or so training Obsidian on Creation Engine 3, which was made for Elder Scrolls 6. A month of training time is way less costly than losing like 90% of the Bethesda modding community who are familiar with Creation Engine already from Fallout 4.

Looks like id is about the size they were Doom 2016, which is about 100, and that there still is an idTech team.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

IdTech is dead. The only people still around are the people who will help with current project support but there will be no new development of the engine with the cuts made. So right now, if Project Helix ships in the next year its going to bomb because of cost. The current series X no one will touche with its price point and of course MS is burning everything and hanging another 1600 layoffs on everyones head as an incentive to leave. Soon there will be a big cut to Gamepass content which will see that 30 million shrink to nothing and MS will just turtle up with a few franchises and go from there.

I won't be speaking in absolutes as misinformation continues to be spread amongst the news media. All we're being told now is that id Software is back to the size they were when they shipped Doom 2016. I don't think we'll get anything concrete till Quakecon.

I read this comment that does make a good point. Essentially studios getting too big and returns not justifying the size increase since COVID.

“If this is true, the argument from MSFT's perspective is probably similar to what we've seen at other studios: Allowance to hire and grow teams expanded cost base and impacted returns. When comparing the return from the 2016 version to return on The Dark Ages, did a bigger cost base result in meaningful gains?

Eternal is something of a wildcard because it released right at the start of COVID.

We've heard this all over the industry, assuming this is what is going on. Studios that doubled or tripled in size were not able to create returns proportional to that cost increase.”
