Forums - Gaming - Discussion Thread – The 13th Annual Greatest Games Event

Guessed by @coolbeans

Mass Effect almost missed out on being included this year, until I thought about it a bit more and remembered how awesome it is. I think for me, as someone who could never get into the sequel, this game is actually kinda hurt by the trilogy it's a part of. Like I could never fully appreciate how good it is, because I keep thinking of it as only one part of a greater whole, and in a world that is desperate to convince me that the second game is the magnum opus, I keep forgetting the game I actually enjoyed.

Not anymore, I hope. This game is amazing, it really is. Everything about it. How it effortlessly sets up this vast universe, filled with deep lore about just about everything you see, a real feeling that there's a history to this galaxy and that you're only one small part of it, just trying to do your best and eventually learning about some of the deeper mysteries of it. And then how interesting the characters are, and how exciting the story gets by the second half of the game, building up and up to a truly epic climax... it's just great. I don't know that I'll ever get into the sequels, but it's about time I stop putting that weight on a game that was nothing but fantastic. In hindsight, I should've ranked it higher, but I guess that'll be up to next year now.

Number 50 to 44 have been guessed. Here are hints for the next few games in my list:

43 - The sequel to this game is actually a prequel

42 - This might be considered Nintendo's best game by some

41 - Character got headshot by a sniper after he had a problem with his gun jamming.

43 - Red Dead Redemption? (Also on my list, shocked nobody's gotten it)

42 - Breath of the Wild?

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

Guessed by @drbunnig

I didn't make yearly lists of my favorite games when I was a young kid, but if I did, this would've been #1. I actually never even beat it back then, only ever making it as far as the Wing Fortress zone, but that only made it more impactful when I came back to it later on in the life and started playing through it for fun. And I don't think this will be seen as a hot take by anyone, but yeah, this game is fun. It's been a long time since I stopped caring for Sonic, but I used to care a lot, and that's a feeling I can respect too.

Correct on both. Maybe my hints are more giveaways than hints at this point.

50 - Probably the most out-of-left-field one on my list and the only game I'd argue is 'bad'. Dinosaurs and vore. Also it has an arcade version that's trash.
- It hasn't moved since last year. 2-player coop is fun. You get to smooch cave-babes.
49 - Mega Man X4 - PS1 - Salnax
48 - IT's a weird game that straddles the line between being grounded and so serious it makes you cry being kind of absurd and outlandish, especially in its DLC.
- It's a sequel to the prequel.
47 - New Super Mario Bros U/Deluxe - WiiU/Switch - Kakadu
46 - The Messenger - Switch/PS4 - Kenjab

45 - It's not Bioshock Infinite but you turn out to be the villain in the end. IT's also very Metroid. (If y'all don't get it, I'll be disappointed)
44 - the spiritual predecessor to what might be turning into my favourite game franchise/series/sequence ever. It has not held up as well as the others but the Remake is the pinnacle of modern graphics.
43 - People called it a 2D version of a game in my honourable mentions, but in reality it's got so many more RPG and Action-adventure elements.
42 - DLC doesn't just mean DownLoadable Content. DLC is also the title of the DLC, and I got the platinum trophy earlier this year.
41 - It is...inspired by some of my favourite games ever, and it is a 2D sidescrolling sequel to a game that was inspired by the sequels to the games this game is inspired by, which I actually didn't like.

44) Hmm, Demon's Souls?

41) ... is a mindbender. Doubt I can guess it, but if I were to take a wild guess I'd say Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2

Okay, time to finish the spam with just a little extra hint for #45, wondering how much help this one will actually be.

- Challenging, highly regarded old school Zelda-like that was exclusive to one of Nintendo’s rivals.

Golden Axe Warrior?

Nope, not that. The game is from a gen somewhere between your guess and @Mnementh's (Okami)

#47

- Destroying speakers will stop music playing in that particular part of the level.

- Due to a bug, it's impossible to collect everything in the original version of the game. To access the secret level, you have to use a cheat code or an Action Replay.

- The developer was rebranded and went on to produce some of the biggest selling games in history.

- You often have to control various animals in each level to complete certain tasks, and then make your way to the teleporter to exit.

- You will usually have to kill the animals you want to use. You will lose health if you're not in control of an animal at any time.

List so far

I guess there's some need for a couple hints here:

45: A game very similar to the Metroid series.

Symphony of the Night?

Nope

I guess there's some need for a couple hints here:

47: This early 3D PC game is mostly an ego-shooter, but also an adventure game and has some strategy mixed into it.

  1. Hint: As long as you have summoned a castle and it is still standing, getting killed will respawn you there, otherwise it's game over.
  2. You're not firing weapons, but rather casting spells that you learn from scrolls you can find in the levels.

I'm thinking this is Hexen.

If not, and I can make a second guess, I'd guess Heretic.

Neither of those

48: No transformations in this entry of the series despite it being a series staple

  1. Hint: Instead, you use the equipment of a former enemy in this game.
  2. Hint: The different levels are built in a Metroidvania style, and without having found all the aforementioned Equipments, you can't fully explore the levels.

Not exactly, but you're on the right path there.
