Alright, it's time to kick this off. I wasn't gonna do honorable mentions this year, hence why even though I am doing it now, there's only this many.

Honorable mention: Biomutant
Not the most highly regarded game out there, and maybe with good reason, but I'll always look back fondly at the time I spent with it last year. It's a truly beautiful world and exploring it was relaxing, soothing even. Still think people were too harsh on it, it got a lot of things really right (and I already mentioned it last year, but the crafting system was especially cool, better than in any other game I've seen).

Honorable mention: Endling - Extinction is Forever
The reason why this post exists. I just played through Endling, a bit too late for it to get on my list, and I'm not sure if it would get in normally, but I had to give it a shoutout somewhere. I actually found out about this game through an article that was posted on VGC's homepage last week, thought it looked cute and I needed something relaxing. That was obviously a mistake, because this game is super stressful, but it's a fantastic journey. The kind where you keep going based on nothing but hope, in spite of everything becoming more and more hopeless around you. And when it hits, it hits hard. So, yeah, thanks @trunkswd for posting the article about it.

Honorable mention: Hyper Light Drifter
I could call this the most "high-profile" omission from this year's list, given the long run it had on my top 50's. I always felt that Hyper Light Drifter was the kind of game that needed a second playthrough to really solidify itself among my favorites, but I never got around to replaying it, so it's faded as the years went by. The lingering feeling, however, is a certain guilt for not having given it a second go, because it really was a great game.

No problem! I like to write up news on smaller and lesser known games and not just write up only the biggest news.

No Man's Sky has had a bit of a rollercoaster ride in my lists over the years. In in 2016, out for the three following years, back in in 2020, out as an honorable mention last year, and now it's here again to kick off the list. I think the struggle I have with it is that, for all the good times I had playing it, and all the things I built in it, even after all these updates and additional content, I still don't consider the game actually good. It's never stopped being a grind, really, if anything some of the new stuff just made the grind even worse. Back in 2016, I found No Man's Sky boring, but my kind of boring, if that makes any sense - and I still think the same of it after all these years, only it's become less of a guilty pleasure because of all the improvements that have salvaged its reputation. I'm always inclined to move it outside the list because of how little fun it actually is, but this game's been a significant part of my life and it deserves to be here. Well, this time at least.

I guess there's some need for a couple hints here:

48: No transformations in this entry of the series despite it being a series staple

  1. Hint: Instead, you use the equipment of a former enemy in this game.
  2. Hint: The different levels are built in a Metroidvania style, and without having found all the aforementioned Equipments, you can't fully explore the levels.

47: This early 3D PC game is mostly an ego-shooter, but also an adventure game and has some strategy mixed into it.

  1. Hint: As long as you have summoned a castle and it is still standing, getting killed will respawn you there, otherwise it's game over.
  2. You're not firing weapons, but rather casting spells that you learn from scrolls you can find in the levels.

45: A game very similar to the Metroid series.

45 - Axiom Verge?

The spinoff-but-actually-a-sequel to Persona 5 was surprisingly fun and exciting when it came out, striking a good balance between the mindless musou combat and the strategic elements of the Persona series, and delivering a much more story-heavy experience than anyone was expecting. For as fun as it was, however, it's far from being the most memorable game, already starting to fade in my memory less than two years after playing it. It's the kind of game that fades as it goes on, too, with the combat eventually becoming a bit stale and even the story, which starts out quite promising, ultimately devolves into a repetitive endeavor that has no idea how to differentiate itself from its predecessor. I enjoyed this game a lot, but a classic, it is not.

50 - Probably the most out-of-left-field one on my list and the only game I'd argue is 'bad'. Dinosaurs and vore. Also it has an arcade version that's trash.
- It hasn't moved since last year. 2-player coop is fun. You get to smooch cave-babes.
49 - Mega Man X4 - PS1 - Salnax
48 - IT's a weird game that straddles the line between being grounded and so serious it makes you cry being kind of absurd and outlandish, especially in its DLC.
- It's a sequel to the prequel.
47 - New Super Mario Bros U/Deluxe - WiiU/Switch - Kakadu
46 - The Messenger - Switch/PS4 - Kenjab

45 - It's not Bioshock Infinite but you turn out to be the villain in the end. IT's also very Metroid. (If y'all don't get it, I'll be disappointed)
44 - the spiritual predecessor to what might be turning into my favourite game franchise/series/sequence ever. It has not held up as well as the others but the Remake is the pinnacle of modern graphics.
43 - People called it a 2D version of a game in my honourable mentions, but in reality it's got so many more RPG and Action-adventure elements.
42 - DLC doesn't just mean DownLoadable Content. DLC is also the title of the DLC, and I got the platinum trophy earlier this year.
41 - It is...inspired by some of my favourite games ever, and it is a 2D sidescrolling sequel to a game that was inspired by the sequels to the games this game is inspired by, which I actually didn't like.

Number 50 to 44 have been guessed. Here are hints for the next few games in my list:

43 - The sequel to this game is actually a prequel

42 - This might be considered Nintendo's best game by some

41 - Character got headshot by a sniper after he had a problem with his gun jamming.

The least mZuzek game that insists on appearing on mZuzek's list.

That's really the best way to describe it. This is essentially a visual novel told in a sidescroller format, with a slice-of-life story featuring characters whose only difference from ordinary people living ordinary lives is the way they look. It's like an all-in-one of all the things I never cared much for, and yet here it is. It's mainly down to the writing, which instantly immersed me into the game because of how realistic it felt, and how relatable it made all the characters pretty much immediately. Anyone who's played it knows how good the writing is, really. And the soundtrack was also fantastic, even without getting into the cool songs you get to play on the bass. For as much as Night in the Woods is not my kind of thing, and I almost feel like this inner rejection, that I need to get rid of it somehow, it always finds a way to stick around. Which is probably a sign of it being very good.
