Still four games left, so here's another set of hints.

#4

-Perpetuate the cycle or break it

-Your journey begins locked away in an asylum

-"With fire came disparity."

#3

-For 32 years, the path to earth has been lost

-The Shivans return

-You're a pilot in the alliance

#2

-10,000 years after the war that freed humanity

-The main character has spent the previous five years searching for the monster that killed his parents and destroyed his village

-He returns to his new home village at the start of the game after five years, only to find it destroyed and his childhood friend taken captive

#1

-Contains numerous references and allusions to the series' past

-Starts with some of the characters putting on a stage play

-The play is only a cover for a kidnapping plan

4) Dark Souls?

1) Final Fantasy IX?

Almost done catching up, sorry for the big spam there.

Instead of posting another hint for #7, I'll just post the hint for the next game and say that both of the games here are from the same franchise.

Hmm, #5 brings a couple of games to mind... But not from the same franchise. If I have to choose one I'll go with Skyward Sword.

And just in case I got the franchise right, might as well guess Breath of the Wild for #7.

Alrighty then, hope you all had a good Christmas, I'm back and brought the last few hints with me:

5) A stealthy character that you don't play as in any of the three main campaigns offers major guidance in all three

4) The protagonist of this game hates #3

3) You accidentally revive your old enemy while trying to escape

2) Contains countless references to other media, particularly Lord of the Rings and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

1) "Don't overdo it"

#3 - Portal 2? Although I'm not sure about the clue for #4 then. Half-Life 2?

Portal 2 is correct!

Wrong on 4 though, it's not a Valve game. I suppose "would hate" would have been more accurate.

Top 10!

#10 - This game’s subtitle suggests some backward time travel but really you only move laterally; the sequel’s subtitle captured the essence of this game more accurately.

#9 - This game would be my GOTY in 2014 and would also be my pick in 2017, if it weren’t for my #1 game on this list.

#8 - Speaking of GOTY, this title could win in any year between 2010 and 2012, depending on the players region.

#7 - This game and its predecessor began on PC; the former was ported to the OG Xbox and the latter was ported to PS2.

#6 - The hero’s loyal companion is technically in this game, but you’ll need to get to 100% completion to visit with him.

10 A Link to the Past?

6 Super Mario 64

drbunnig beat me on 10 and 6, but I'll take on these;

9: Shovel Knight?

8: Xenoblade Chronicles.

Correct on both!

#8 is right! #9 is a game that launched in 2014 and arrived again in 2017 in an upgraded form.
