Forums - Sales - Anybody see this Nintendomination coming?

Nintendomination is bad for gaming in general. An even playing field would of been better. Imagine a HD Nintendo console with all your classics? You will have to wait until next generation for a HD Nintendo console plus motion control plus Hard Drive. No Hard Drive for the Nintendo Wii is probably the biggest issue the Wii faces.

If you really feel this way, you must have hated the last generation. The PS2 was far more dominant than any of the current consoles will ever be - there certainly was no even playing field. Of course, that's assuming this isn't just a cheap shot against the Wii... right?

On topic, no, I did not anticipate the success of the Wii. I did think it would be more successful than the Gamecube, but not capture enough of the mainstream to break out and be a sales phenomenon. Once the generation actually started, however, it became pretty obvious that the Wii would win. Ever since March of 2007 (when it became clear that the PS3 Euro launch was not going to propel it past the Wii) I've been completely confident that Nintendo would end the generation with the most overall sales.

I thought I'd walk into the store a couple days after the Wii launch and snag one. Who wanted a Wii? The PS3 had all of the media attention, and hype. Boy, was I a fool. Couldn't get a Wii until 7 months later!

the wii had as much media attention as the ps3, actually the wii had way more media attention because of their focus on casual gamers.

Not even Nintendo themselves saw 'the Wii coming'.

Though, this generation is a strange one...one thing Mummelmann said, which was "I think the Wii will get a lot less 'big' 3rd party titles than a market leader usually does",made me wonder....if it turns out to be true, then it only reinforces my belief the patterns we were all used to are disappearing.

 PS2 and PS1 one before dominating the competition was great. BTW: I am pro-Sony. Most of the Sony fans are annoyed that Nintendo has came from no where with the success of the Nintendo Wii which has so far outsold the PS3 by 2 to 1.

@krik

Would tend to agree with you that Wii will have a shorter lifecycle (I do sense that it could just be riding high at the moment). The coming years will be very interesting to follow for the living room sonsoles market.

However, for the DS, the sheer volume of sales justifies the use of a term such as "domination" imo. But that's just me...

Elaine: I will never understand people

So when Nintendo has the largest market share, it's a bad thing and we need an even playing field... but when Sony dominates the market, that's a great thing? OK... Well, at least you're honest in admitting a serious bias. It's a little difficult to take anything you say seriously, however.

krik's comments above are priceless. Still going with the "shorter lifespan" argument, I see.

E3 2006.

When they unveiled the wiimote in 2005 I wasn't quite convinced but after seeing the whole package of what they wanted to do I knew it.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

Nintendo deserve to win this generation, they needed to be different and innovative and that's what they did. While sony handed us a 600 dollar blue-ray player with games coming out years later. Sony expected to just walk into the ring without a fight and win, but the opponant had other thing in mind.

The first time when I started to doubt that Sony will be able to keep its supremacy was at the beginning of 06 , when the DS started to seriously outsell the PSP in the US and EU to , and not just in Japan . Than there was the 600$ pricetag announced and the loss of many former exclusive PS 3rd party games ... than I knew that the good days where behind us :P
