Forums - Sales - Anybody see this Nintendomination coming?

New to this site and saw in someone's signature a quote from Leo-j stating that the Wii would be last (either in 07 or 08, can't remember). Made me wonder who saw the current situation (Wii domination and DS domination) coming back in 06 and before.

I know I didn't... First time I saw the Wii and the DS, I immediately thought Sony would eat them alive (and thought 360 would do a decent job against PS3 in US and Europe). Was only at the E3 the year before Wii launched that I considered the Wii could sell some units (as I kept hearing the word fun to describe it) but nothing of this magnitude. As for DS, never heard anything until it just took off in sales and left the PSP in its wake (though a very decent wake).

So, anyone out there who would've bet on the Wii and DS? Be honest...

I think pre E3 06...no, I didn't think Nintendo had a chance in Hell. But as you said, after that E3 all bets were off. It didn't help that Sony had one of the worst E3 performances in E3 history that year.

I did expect to see the 360 make inroads, but I didn't foresee what I consider to be catastrophic problems (at least in pr/market perception terms) with the dependability of their machine. Of course, the fact that they have failed to diversify their genre portfolio has been more of an Achilles heel than the RROD.

I expected the 360 and the PS3 to fight for the same marketshare....and so far that has been true. Of course the release of Home/LBP could really help to sway that demographic.

Edit...Welcome to VGChartz.

Nintendomination is bad for gaming in general. An even playing field would of been better. Imagine a HD Nintendo console with all your classics? You will have to wait until next generation for a HD Nintendo console plus motion control plus Hard Drive. No Hard Drive for the Nintendo Wii is probably the biggest issue the Wii faces.

BTW before visiting this site I had no idea about the success of the DS and the Wii.

I still dont believe it, and i never gave the wii a chance. It's unbelievable what Nintendo is doing what now.

Thanks for the welcome (as you can see I don't have many posts and that can be an issue on this site as I've been called a troll once or twice already...).

And not surprised to see that you two hadn't seen this coming either...

I did not see this coming at all... After I played the DS I figured it would wipe the floor with PSP as its 5 times more fun than the PSP as a portable machine.

After I played the Wii I still had my doubts and frankly I'm a little shocked at the magic of Nintendo.

I believed in both after seeing what they could do at their respective E3 ravelings, I saw PSP and was loved the power for a handheld but thought Sony thought about the system the wrong way, handhelds don't need to be like consoles, or media players, and really needed to be durable and long battery life all of which the Original PSP's lacked, plus after seeing some of the creativity of the DS games I was sold, I knew it would be a bit uphill battle to convince the "hardcore" gamer mostly the industry itself to take DS seriously.

Same thing for the 360, PS3, and Wii, the 360 launch was lack luster IMO but came into its own around the time Wii and PS3 launched, but at that E3 before Wii launched it just stole the show, plus it was easier to think that Wii could change console gaming after what DS did for handhelds. The industry needed change badly, the last console innovation was the jump from 2D to 3D, everything after was just add-ons and on top of it all the controllers had been basically the same for years so you got a new story or genre but same gameplay experience. So yes I saw it coming, innovation plus image always wins.

It was sort of a pleasent surprise. I wanted a Wii and a DS, but Sony's product looked ready to dominate. The PSP and the PS3 had so many extra features (movies, online, music, etc.). I bet on the wrong horse, but I'm glad I was wrong.

No. Never and I'm a Nintendo fan. I thought that if they would be in 2nd about now that would be good. I thought that Sony would continue to dominate. So did they and I believe that's what there problem was. Oh, and by the way, welcome lazyrider.
