XS Outsells PS5, Switch Comfortably in 1st - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for Mar 13-19

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console with 361,213 units sold for the week ending March 19, 2022, according to VGChartz estimates. The Switch has now sold an estimated 105.95 million units lifetime.

The Xbox Series X|S sold 219,136 units to bring their lifetime sales to 13.43 million units. The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 188,535 units to bring its lifetime sales to 18.50 million units.

PS5 sales compared to the same week for the PS4 in 2015 are down by nearly 122,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same week for the Xbox One are up by nearly 129,000 units. PS4 sold 310,164 units for the week ending March 21, 2015 and Xbox One sales were at 90,160 units.

The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 15,879 units, and the Xbox One sold 1,364 units.

Nintendo Switch sales compared to the same week a year ago are down by 109,465 units (-23.3%), while the PlayStation 5 is down 101,076 (-34.9%) and the Xbox Series X|S is up 95,652 units (77.5%).

The PlayStation 4 is down 51,561 (-76.5%) and the Xbox One is down 21,147 units (-93.9%).

Looking at sales week-on-week, Nintendo Switch sales are up by nearly 2,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 49,000 units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are up by nearly 89,000 units.

PS5 in Euroe though…

There was a decent sized shipment for both in the US and UK, although Series X had the most consoles available. PS5 had a bit more consoles available in mainland Europe than in previous weeks. But not the same size as was seen in the US and UK. 

Great week for Xbox

Xbox is going to be a force to be reckoned with this year if they can maintain anything close to these numbers consistently.

Slowly but surely, Playstation 5 is starting to lose it's lead on Xbox. This is definitely not what I anticipated happening this year.

Sony only forecasted to ship 2 million PS5s in Q1 2022. Shortages have hit Sony far harder than Microsoft as the Series S is easier to produce. Although, this week saw a big shipment of Series X consoles.

Availability for Xbox Series X improved drastically around here. I even saw consoles on the shelves in a local store today which hasn't happened since the very release of the thing.

What is the total sold amount you have for this year for PS5? I have a feeling they might actually miss this forecast unless last week had substantial shipments. A lot of people may argue that shipped isn't sold and VGChartz tracks sold, but with the way that PS5 is always sold out every week they are practically synonymous. 

We have PS5 sales for 2022 at 1,522,651 with 2 weeks left. It is hard to say if they will miss it or not. They were using air freight to ship consoles during the holiday, so we only had about a 300K gap between shipped vs sold. If the gap is a bit bigger it could still mean they hit their forecast as it takes a lot longer to ship by cargo ships. 

As always when Sony releases their quarterly shipment figures we will adjust our number if necessary.
