Babylon's Flop.
Even with PS4 and 5 combined, less than 1/16th the retail sales of Square's other release of the week, Triangle Strategy, which probably had a faction the budget.

Elden Ring has sold over 1 Million units in Japan.
Famitsu has it at about 350K for PlayStation platforms at retail. Assuming a 50/50 split between PS/PC, that's an additional 150K units sold through digital for PlayStation, which is a figure many users posting on these threads would consider to be too high lol.

The 50/50 doesn't even make sense. I think its just individuals downplaying Playstation's digital efforts (growth and importance) in Japan because it doesn't fit narratives.

I'm just trying to be conservative. I think the sales split is closer to 60/40 considering Elden Ring sold best on PlayStation in many parts of the world. I wouldn't be surprised to see some users claiming PC accounts for the rest of the sales though lol.

According to the press release, the figures are shipped, not sold through, so some of the number will be copies still on shelves and in transit.
"ELDEN RING" 1M Units Sold in Japan, 12M Units Sold Worldwide! - PressRelease | FromSoftware
"The total sales figure is derived from distribution figures of the package version and sales figures of the downloadable versions."
Famitsu's numbers are sold through, so the difference won't be all digital sales.

Also according to Famitsu the sold vs shipped ratio was 80-100%. So at maximum, 20% of all famitsu sold through sales would be the amount sitting on shelves.
So saying 350k sold, that would be 70k on shelves.

All I'm saying is that these are factors to be kept in mind if we're going to try to guesstimate a figure. There's also a 10 day differential between Famitsu's figures here and today's PR.

I am just adding more data. If we can lock down the data, we can get a good estimate.

n’t think your looking at it correctly at all. An example I gave before was astral chain. A game that released in 2019 with about a 70% digital rate. That doesn’t mean all of a sudden all Nintendo releases are gonna be above 50%.
pc market exist and has a huge dark souls following. On PS consoles the game should be between 600k/700k. The other will be pc/Xbox

If this weeks total brings the physical amount to 400k, a 50/50 split would mean a 20% digital rate for Elden Ring which would be absurd, even for Japan. My point was that when thinking about digital sales for Playstation games in Japan, that 20% number should be a lot higher, with the base starting at least 30% with some games going higher.
The narrative part is responding to what Leo-j mentions exactly for GT7. 100k digital for that game is well within reason for some random guy to say 'no' with no backup. The game looked like it had an initial shipment of 200k between the PS4 and PS5, 100k would mean 33% digital, reasonable.
