In your case, probably.

But there's other cases where say someone's on a family plan where all 8 people play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and instead of paying $200 for just the Booster Course Pass for all 8 people, everyone gets access to it for $80. Which would make sense from a financial standpoint.

I don't really have anyone living with me that plays Mario Kart 8 DX, and even though I have my late cousin's kids come over every so often for family stuff I don't know if they really play it either, so how about I just got the DLC for myself and do local multiplayer?

That definitely works! Because the question really is how much do you value access to the other stuff like the N64 and Genesis games?

If the answer is not much or they mean nothing to you, then buying the MK8D DLC pass outright is the way to go.

Like I mentioned before, the Expansion Pack is just as the name implies. An expansion to NSO. So throwing in paid DLC's and such is just a way to add value to it get you subscribed and keep you subscribed.

Nintendo will have to elaborate further, but I suspect no in the case of the Booster Course Pass.

With the Animal Crossing paid DLC, Nintendo let you keep items you earned if you unsubscribed, but not to the content itself.

You mean getting it through the service is basically a sham?

No, you know what you're getting. You can play these tracks until your sub runs out. You're not getting lied to or anything.

There is an aspect in which the DLC is free. When these courses appear in the rotation there will be no blocking players who didn't purchase wither the DLC or subscribe to the expansion pass when the new courses are selected. You will be able to play all 48 courses online without spending a penny on anything other than the base game and the original NSO. Purchasing the DLC is only necessary to play the courses in single player or local multiplayer. In addition, when playing with friends only one player needs to own the DLC.

Right, found this article about it. Good to know.

I just thought that if I subbed I would get them permanently without having to pay extra.

Now you know that that's not the case. If you play online you can still play these courses from the random selection without having the DLC.

So I might as well buy the DLC separately and wait for more N64 games to come to the expansion pass?

Idk, that's what I'm going to do.

But the Expansion Pass is getting better?

You think it won't?

I had my doubts after the emulation errors went viral.

They fixed them mostly and have added more stuff too. I wished they'd add two N64 games per month instead of one and I'm hoping for more consoles but thus far it looks like slowly but surely it'll grow into something worth 40€. Not sure about $50 though, the pricing difference is really weird.

48 tracks pulled from past games does suggest that the next mainline Mario Kart is going to be a major reimagining of the series on a fundamental level. The old model of 16 new tracks and 16 redone retro tracks is being replaced with something new that Nintendo hopes will prevent fans from complaining when MK9 finally comes out and has a fraction of the nearly 100 tracks MK8 Deluxe will have when all is said and done. At this point I would expect it to not have any retro tracks in the base game, and for there to be changes to the gameplay that go far beyond the gliding, underwater, and anti-gravity sections of the last few games.

After the 48 DLC tracks come out MK8D will basically be the Smash Ultimate of Mario Karts, so yeah expect changes and the franchise is due for a change anyway. I think the most obvious change, and what has already been rumored, is effectively turning it more into a Nintendo Kart. MK8 already went this way a little bit with a few non-Mario characters and tracks, but I expect MK9 will fully embrace this: a bunch of characters, courses, and weapons from other Nintendo series.

I bet it'll still have the same sort of favorite MK tracks like rainbow road and stuff, but a lot more variety by bringing in a bunch of other franchises. Maybe it'll be like 16 new Mario tracks and 16 other game tracks or something, or well hopefully it'll be 48 total as that's the norm now, so maybe 16 old tracks as well. There's plenty of track themes to choose from: Zelda, Metroid, AC, Splatoon, Fzero, Star Fox, Pikmin, Pokemon, etc.

Oh, the first 8 new tracks are already available, at least in Europe.
