Forums - Sales Discussion - Famitsu sales: Week 50, 2021 - (6th Dec - 12th Dec)

Well actually I lie, the objective points are
1. PS5 tracking ahead of PS4
2. PS5 Software much lower

The meaningful part is what sales would actually be if everyone who wanted a PS5 in Japan could get one, how many PS5's would there be staying in Japan and what would software sales look like then. No one has those answers.

and sonys poor treament is not exclusive to Japan, Spain and other EU countries had weeks where there were more PS4's being sold than PS5's.

Year 2050, the same handful of users still cannot understand Japan likes mobile gaming, something the rest of the world realised 10 years ago.

Nintendo has a handheld. Sony does not. Nintendo can have a handheld because they are not supporting the entire third party industry with their hardware, hence weak hardware is acceptable.

Year 2050, PlayStation fans, while reminescenting the long past presence of PlayStation consoles in Japan, parrot to each other the idea that the cause of the decline was solely due to the form factor so that their hearts can rest at peace.

When someone dared to pointed them out that in 2020 Nintendo's first-party software alone accounted for more than half of the packaged software sales in Japan they responded at unison: "hardware! hardware! hardware!".

Form factor is important but so is software and Nintendo is smoking everybody else in Japan which is the real reason that the pattern we are seeing in Japan isn't replicated in US, even though Switch is wildly successful there too.

Total packaged software sell-through in Japan as end of 2020 (Media Create):

PSV

Total software: 23.68M

First-Party: 2.73M

Third-Party: 20.95M

PS4

Total software: 53.59M

First-Party: 8.35M

Third-Party: 45.24M

3DS

Total software: 119.12M

First-Party: 51.11M

Third-Party: 68.01M

NSW

Total software: 62.20M

First-Party: 43.50M

Third-Party: 18.70M

Well, that's one way to say that Sony is toast in Japan.

If selling 9-10M and 50-70M software is toast then you've been having the wrong toast

It has to sell 6mil first and that’s not even guaranteed. Also sales for PS5 this year will be under 1mil for software. Take that as you will with your 50mil prediction

Playstation houses the majority sales of the entire gaming industry, who develop games for cutting edge hardware, using cutting edge game engines, using software devs and creators that like to push the medium to the edge.

Playstation is never going to give up the top specs throne, and it shouldn't because that's where the money and the future of gaming is at. Maybe when streaming is good enough, or Sony gets some very good mobile chips that allows all current games to be played it will do another Playstation portable, but until then Sony is not going to worry. The future is simple elsewhere and the entire gaming industry knows it.

I dunno what this is supposed to mean, but the year is still 2021 and Nintendo is outselling every possible system in Japan, and also the US and sometimes Europe. Also the Xbox Series X is more powerful.

I really hope that Sony is planning to improve PS5 availability in Japan during January and February. I’m hoping it’s some kind of strategy where they focus on other regions during Christmas, but make up for it a little bit by increasing shipments to Japan during January and February to generate some momentum as Elden Ring and other games that appeal in Japan get close to arriving.

Oh yeah, the Sony decline that started with the PS3 but Nintendo users think it started with the Switch.

Well if you want to count all sony consoles in japan it technically started with the psp

It always makes me laugh when people say that japan is handheld focused only and that japan would be back to Sony if they released a psp 2, when in actuality, even when Sony made handheld, they still sold less than nintendo handheld.

Point is, Nintendo is just more popular in japan then Sony is

Nintendo users? Or people with common sense? The decline happened but this is a much deeper decline and a bit different from the previous transitions

They always have been more than Sony, and since the Gameboy, Nintendo handhelds (Gameboy Advance the exception) have dominated Japan.
