Forums - Sales Discussion - Console launch sales comparison graphs

Updated Japan comparisons with the new Famitsu numbers (Week ending 21st November 2021). Graphs can be seen in the OP.

PS5 is still ahead of the PS4 in Japan launch aligned, but unless the stock situation is miraculously cleared next week it will fall behind, PS4 outsold the PS5 10:1 this week. PS4 sales were so high for a February week due to the release of Dragon Quest Heroes, which sold 265k units on PS4 in this week.

Console Total Sales Week 53 Sales
PS3 1,390,127 47,011
PS5 1,177,245 4,307
PS4 1,159,897 46,973

PlayStation 3 Week 54 = November 17th 2007
PlayStation 4 Week 54 = February 28th 2015
PlayStation 5 Week 54 = November 21st 2021

Xbox 360 continues to run away with it, it's worth noting that 360 is in December meaning it's expected it will have higher sales yet I don't see the Xbox Series getting anywhere close to the 360's 2006 holiday sales in Japan.

Console Total Sales Week 54 Sales
Xbox 360 248,231 18,735
Xbox Series X/S 122,137 3,422
Xbox One 56,900 149

Xbox 360 Week 54 = December 16th 2006
Xbox One Week 54 = September 12th 2015
Xbox Series Week 54 = November 21st 2021

With the help of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Switch takes a big 100k chunk out of the DS's lead with a fantastic week of sales, but again worth noting we are comparing November numbers for Switch against August numbers for DS so the difference is amplified by this.

Console Total Sales Week 247 Sales
Nintendo DS 27,483,775 65,313
Nintendo Switch 22,026,770 167,778
Nintendo 3DS 19,387,504 28,593

Nintendo DS Week 247 = August 23rd 2009
Nintendo 3DS Week 247 = November 15th 2015
Nintendo Switch Week 247 = November 21st 2021

Oops, should have included that.

It's crazy that about half the difference between the Switch and DS globally is just in Japan. Looks like Switch may still have some good opportunities for growth there with Splatoon 3.

Switch total sales are closer to the DS than I thought. I'm not sure if Switch will be able to outsell it, but maybe it's going to depend on Nintendo.

Updated Famitsu numbers and graphs to week ending 28th November 2021.

PS4 overtakes the PS5 this week in Japan launch aligned. The PS5 has had abysmal stock in Japan for the last 4 weeks in a row. Xbox Series dries up completely this week with less than 1k units available.

PS5/XSX is now in Week 55 in Japan:

Nintendo Switch is now in Week 248 in Japan: Switch continues to have strong sales, aligned comparison vs DS is currently August vs November but the equivalent November week in 2009 the DS sold 111k, so Switch is looking to have a slightly stronger holiday season in 2021 than DS did in 2009.

There's been a slight adjustment to VGC figures for a few weeks earlier this year. Numbers in tables have been updated but graphs are still using old numbers until next update.

Changes: (combined in below post)

Updated with Week 55 numbers, plus there have been more adjustments to November weeks ontop of what was in my previous post, so removed that and added all the adjustments since last update together here to avoid confusion.

Adjustments since Week 54 update:
PS5 adjusted up by 40k
Switch adjusted up by 42k

Here are the numbers:

PlayStation 4 Week 55 = 29th November 2014
Xbox One Week 55 = 6th December 2014

Xbox 360 Week 55 = 9th December 2006
Nintendo Switch Week 55 = March 17th 2018

PS5 overtakes Switch on the same week PS4 did, though by a higher amount. PS5 lost a 156k chunk to PS4 on BF but remains 272k ahead of the PS4. It will be interesting to see if it can stay ahead of the PS4 by the end of december or if that stock situation make this unattainable.

Switch has a fantastic BF, while still being down YoY it's a lot less of a drop for this week than it could have been and beats DS's 1.57m BF of 2009, though DS had a stellar December in 2009 so total November+December sales for DS 2009 vs Switch 2021 will be interesting to watch.

Xbox Series beats PS5 weekly for the first time and while short of Xbox One's BF 2014 it is a good result regardless, helped by the Series S being easier to stock than the Series X, but sales were obviously still limited by how many units were on shelves and could have been higher just like PS5.

Back in 2009 Black Friday wasn't really a thing at all in Europe. That's probably why the Switch beat it.
