Forums - Gaming Discussion - What was the best year in gaming?

Some years just seem better than others in the video game industry whether it's legendary titles or gaming hardware releases, or a combo of both. Made me wonder what year does everyone feel was the best year gaming had to offer? Where no matter when in the year it was, the industry was just on fire!

It doesn't have to be a year you experienced personally. It could also be a year where you looked at what all happened and decided that year was it.

For me, it was 2007! There wasn't any notable hardware releases, but the games that came out......LEGENDARY!

Bioshock

God of War II

Mass Effect

Halo 3

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Team Fortress 2

Portal

Half-Life 2: Episode 2

Crysis

The Witcher

Rock Band

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Assassin's Creed

Super Mario Galaxy

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (arguably the best expansion in WoW)

Skate

Crackdown

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition

What do you think was the best year in gaming?

Everyone knows it's 1998, no contest.

Metal Gear Solid, Baldur's Gate, Zelda OOT, Half-Life, Grim Fandango, Heart of Darkness, Star Craft, Banjo Kazooie, Thief, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, F Zero X, Unreal, Oddworld: Abe's Exodus, Xenogears, and more

2007 is lame. 2017,2019 and even 2021 are leagues above it.

1999 gave me Dreamcast. 1998 and 1995 are stellar years. 2001 was great. About any year in the 90s far exceeds anything in the 2000s and onward.

Oh and Lost Planet is 2006 not 2007.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

2007 for me aswell.

tag:"reviews only matter for the real hardcore gamer"

I have to go with 2004. Not only were there a ton of great games that year, but there was plenty available on every major platform.

Love and tolerate.

That was in Japan only. I was referring to its worldwide release which was 2007.

The guy that said 1998 is right

1998.

Everyone who lived then knows it, SvennoJ is right.

2035, hands down. The SwitchBox will have Banjo 4, Halo 9, Super Mario Bros. All-Star 3 (Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Sunshine 2, Super Mario Moonwars), ZeldaPunk, MarioKart x Forza, The Outer Worlds/Metroid/Star fox crossover game, Splatoon 5, and Starfield 2. I mean, what could beat that lineup? And sure, Nintendo buying out Microsoft to pull this off gives them an unfair advantage, but it's not their fault they took advantage of the massive drop in MS share values after windows 11 caused Russia to accidentally nuke China. Who could have seen that coming? Certainly not the CEO of Microsoft at the time, Bill Trinen.
