Forums - Gaming Discussion - Future of the Fallout franchise?

There is sooooooo much potential with the Fallout IP that it PAINS me that there isn't a remaster of Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas or even Fallout 1 and 2. Fallout isn't dead, nowhere near it! You have Fallout 76 that has progressively gotten better, Fallout 4 still averages 20,000 players on a daily basis just on Steam alone, and there's even a Fallout TV show being made for Amazon Prime, but as MrMattyPlays describes in the video below, the franchise almost does feel dead for fans like myself. Beyond a remaster/remake, the franchise can go so much further!

Every single studio (minus the studio that made the spin-off, Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel) that has ever touched the Fallout IP is now under one umbrella in Xbox. Obsidian Entertainment (previously Black Isle Studios) and inXile Entertainment (previously Interplay Productions) are the fathers of Fallout. Obsidian moreso than inXile since most of the developers that created the first 2 Fallout games, especially Tim Cain, now work at Obsidian.

But can you imagine the HYPE if we saw a trailer at an Xbox E3 that displayed

*Bethesda Game Studios Logo* "In Association with" *Obsidian Entertainment Logo* "And" *inXile Entertainment Logo* "Fallout 5" Just imagine that title sequence...granted there could be a lot of logistical problems with so many creatives collaborating on a massive project like this.

Or as Matty explains in the video, what if Xbox made an internal studio that could be called "Vault" and it can be overseen by the leaders of all 3 studios (Todd Howard at BGS, Feargus Urquhart or Tim Cain at Obsidian, and Brian Fargo at inXile) to make Fallout games. Fallout could go back to its roots with a brand new game as an isometric turn-based CRPG. There are possibilities of what they can do with the IP, but they're not.

Unfortunately, all 3 studios are working on MAJOR projects. Obviously, BGS is hard working on Starfield then will move on to ES6 which will release in who knows how long. Obsidian is working on Grounded, Avowed, and The Outer Worlds 2. inXile is finishing up DLC development of Wasteland 3 (which Fallout was a spiritual successor of the original Wasteland game) and currently working on an unannounced steampunk FPS RPG in Unreal Engine 5. It leads you to wonder what is going to be done with the Fallout IP in the immediate future? Fallout 76 will never be a true Fallout game, and it isn't meant to be. Similar to Elder Scrolls 6 being developed while ESO continues to live on.

What do you think can be done with the Fallout IP going forward given its unique situation?

I think they probably wont announce anything new from Fallout until after TES6 tbh so it’ll probably be a while

Which Fallout? A choice-oriented role-playing game like Fallout, Fallout 2, and New Vegas? Or a big Action RPG/looter shooter like Fallout 3 and 4? Because I don't know how you can appease both fanbases, the way your post seems to hint at.

Love and tolerate.

They can do both! The Fallout IP does have the flexibility of say, The Legend of Zelda where they release a major title like Breath of the Wild, then while development on the sequel is ongoing, they release a smaller title in Link's Awakening remake. Still a Zelda game, but completely different in presentation.

A choice-oriented role-playing game could be made while the big Action RPG/looter shooter could begin development for release a few years later. The options are there for this franchise. Both types of games don't have to be released at one time of course.

We probably won't see Fallout 5 until the next decade. Maybe we get a remake of FO3 or New Vegas sometime this generation though.

Personally, I think that Fallout 4 had a lot going for it they were just poorly executed. For example, there were little repercussions to siding with one group over another. Also, your villages amounted to really just a bunch of busy work. I think they should take some of those elements and go all out in a Fallout 5. Should be set in Chicago, which is referenced so much in the Fallout lore. In Chicago the Brotherhood of Steel has gone rogue, cutting off ties to the others. I'm thinking like a fascist state where the Brotherhood rules everything. However, the reason they came into power is because they are the only ones able to fight off the huge super mutant hoard coming from the west (also referenced in the lore multiple times). In this sense, your choice to take down the brotherhood or join them can actually affect whether Super Mutants take over. Siding with the brotherhood means that many of the people and numerous factions hate you, but getting rid of them means the game is actually harder and huge towns can be obliterated.

IDK, just a thought. I figured they'd build upon the ideas they'd been working with and this is the best I could come up with in ten minutes lol.

You got me hooked on this premise already!

I think the best fan-service is if Fallout was "remade" in the latest Net Immerse turned Gamebryo turned Creation engine... Much akin to that of Skyblivion.
There would obviously need to be a massive community undertaking of course...

But there is no secret that Fallout 3/New Vegas has NOT aged well visually.

The flip side is... Microsoft is likely able to provide Bethesda more resources now to undertake development of Elder Scrolls, Starfield AND Fallout concurrently. - Will it happen though? Who knows. Fallout 76 left a bad taste in many a persons mouth.

The future of Fallout will always look bright as long as the games release on PC and modders work their magic.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:
