Forums - Gaming - Skyward Sword HD - Is the Nintendo immunity finally coming to an end?

If anything, it seems like Nintendo is generally dismissed by professional critics. They tend to emphasize the latest games from Sony, MS, EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Bethesda, or CD Projekt.. There are some periods, notably the Gamecube and Wii U eras, it's seemed to be that people have been much harsher on Nintendo than on its competitors.

....Yeah it gets a little annoying sometimes. It is almost like a game needs to have vulgarity to be popular.

But hey, 99% of Nintendo games can have dark skinned, muscular, or chubby woman without causing mass fan stupidity. Like that period with Nessa was one of the few times I ever saw that in Nintendo sphere and it lacked what bubbled up with Abby and Alloy and Kasumi......so sometimes that has a niche benefit.

And it isn't like they don't influence each other. Skyrim influenced Breath of the Wild and Breath of the Wild influenced Gods and Monsters. So not sure why critics are immune.

(....I'm going to hazard a guess at least youtube ones act like Nintendo is still doing that content creator program thing).

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

Or maybe the game is from 2011 and standards have changed in 10 years? This happens almost all the time with older games. Games people thought were great or even masterpieces will look back and not think that anymore. Of course there are games that still hold up well and games that didn't get great reception overtime received more praise.
I guess since you started this topic with Zelda we will use that franchise as an example for all three scenarios.

Zelda A Link to the Past: Was seen as a masterpiece back when it came out. To this day it's still seen as a masterpiece.
Zelda Ocarina of Time: Was seen as a masterpiece back then. Now people look back at it as a great game, but not as a masterpiece.
Zelda Windwaker: Was seen as a good game and hated by some. Now it's seen as a masterpiece.

People don't seem to grasp this. A majority of games will not hold up overtime.

Pretty much everywhere I read and watch, many still consider OOT a masterpiece. I’m not upset at that statement, more confused? In my opinion (just an opinion, I emphasise and understand) is it is and always will be a masterpiece. And I reiterate, I haven’t seen much that states the contrary. Just curious. Also, haven’t ever seen Windwaker hailed as a masterpiece, although personally I adore that game and think it’s incredible. Edit - not sure why my text is in the quote box? It doesn’t usually appear like this. Oh, well!

WIND WAKER IS A MASTERPIECE!!!!!!

My second favorite game ever. It holds up really well.

I never understood the whole "nintendo gets a free pass" or "nintendo gets treated differently" to other companies

Like, why can't people who like the games rate them high, why is it that just because some people don't like nintendo games that means everyone else "needs" to find them mediocre too?

Also wow, comparing splatoon to just a dlc game

lol be real.

If EA pulled off a HD rehash like what Nintendo is doing with Skyward Sword? The internet would be all over it trolling. (or any company for that matter. Let's say Sony releases God of War 3 on PS5, brand it as HD and sold it as 60 bucks?

So does Nintendo get a free pass? Yes.

Wait, so that's not EA's entire business model?

It is. Fifa, Madden etc.

Skyward was always controversial and the port was meh. Seems we are jumping the gun a tad bit.

Do people actually still believe the Zelda cycle? I know Aonuma and Iwata spoke on it a few years ago, but I just can't help but think there's glaring contradictions in it. Honestly seems like a somewhat silly summary of a series having peaks and valleys.

I think it is a thing.  I feel like we have seen it pretty heavily playout with The Wind Waker in the last few years.  What you have to remember is that we are not talking about the same group of people.  I doubt many people actually change their minds about each game.  What happens is that the people that were around and criticizing the game when it came out, are just not around as much now that it is 18 years later.  A lot of those people likely don't visit gaming message boards as much or at all anymore.  So while it is possible their opinion hasn't changed, the volume of that opinion seems to have gone down because there are less people to say it.  At the same time, who is more likely to be around?  People for whom that game was their first or second Zelda, who have a little more nostalgia for it.  Or people who are more likely to have played it well after its original release, and therefore avoiding the hype and hype backlash, and are more able to appreciate it on its own merits.

Usually with Zelda games there is a cycle. It comes out and every reviewer tells us it is the greatest thing ever. Then the fans will make sure for a few years that you don't forget that it is the greatest thing ever. However when the next Zelda is announced, we still start hearing that while it is still the best thing ever, it is not a completely flawless greatest thing ever. Then the next games drops and the narrative changes to hate because the new game is the greatest thing ever. Let's take a look

I must say that I am utterly shocked that Skyward Sword got a measly low 80s MC. How could this be? When a single reviewer gave TP a 8.8 and SS a 7.5 at the time of their release, the entire internet knew of the noise that fans were making. I was just reading my monthly Retro Gamer mag and even they remembered Jeff's score. Could it be that critics no longer feel pressured to treat Nintendo games differently? Colin Moriarty even claimed that had Splatoon been a non-Nintendo game, it would been released as a DL game and forgotten within a few months of release.

I am worried because BotW 2 might not get a 90 MC.

The only thing you have to worry about is your reputation.

PS5 and XS supply are kicking into gear. They have already been cumulatively been beating the Switch and soon enough the PS5 will overtake it in weekly sales. Switch sales are slowing down but it could be at an unprecedented rate. In normal circumstances, the OLED model would've saved them but it seems for the first time in history, even the Nintendo fans aren't super keen.

Either way, nobody should worry that hardware sales are slowing down. It will mean that the third-party games that are so in vogue now with Switch users will dry up but the first-party is not going anywhere. Its crazy to think how the Switch despite its massive success is going to repeat some of history from both the Wii and the WiiU.

The last four years must have been tough for you.

.....We still having people trying to do SWITCH IS DOOMED!? Like.....how do we still have that?

Also the OLED Switch was a self inflicted fan hype wound, which fans have been bad with for a while. You know acting upset there isn't any Zelda news in a third party direct they outright say will not have first party stuff in it.....it also ignores the whole chip shortage thing.
