Italy won so I’m happy.
First half was England’s, second was Italy’s, extra time was pretty level. I’d have given Italy a bigger chance in the shootouts, but it was darn close. Even as a neutral viewer, sure, with a preference for Italy but I would have slept fine all the same, this was quite tense. The English crowd was annoying, boo-ing every time Italy took the ball. I was glad when Italy scored because that shut them up.
The English made a decisive mistake with their penalty lineup. Bringing in fresh people who have barely warmed up only to take a penalty kick is dangerous. Still though, their misses are completely due to their stupid run ups. If a player does all these dumb hops before shooting he always misses. It’s pretty funny actually, because you can tell he’ll miss from a mile away, but I don’t get why players don’t just shoot and leave the stupid theatrics. Look at Maguire, the second English taker, there was no way the Italian goalie could stop that.
The biggest mistake though was having a youngster take the final deciding kick. There was no way he would be able to withstand the enormous pressure at that moment. 55 years of misery, and it’s up to you to end that. All or nothing. Eternal glory or doom. His heart-rate must’ve been like 200. The Italian before him already buckled. Poor Saka, he’ll have a penalty-trauma for the rest of his career.
Italy looking at the tournament overal I’d say is the most deserving champion. They have been great at times. Finals can go either way, but the best team won.
Finally, I’ll say the format of playing all over Europe this time sucked. I hope they never do that again, and stick to the familiar singular host country or set of neighboring hosts if they are too small. This goes for the World Cup as well, 2026 will be US/Canada/Mexico. What? All those can surely host it alone just fine. It’ll suck.
