For my money, pre-2000 is basically what I'd consider retro.
Sixth gen (early-2000s) I'd sort of put in a grey area of "semi-retro." Many of the titles bear resemblance to much of the current AAA stuff on a foundational level, but at the same time the graphics are usually still pretty crude and gameplay usually more limited and linear.
To me once you get to Xbox 360/PS3, it's hard to tag those retro, though one can certainly make a case for the Wii.

Have to kind of agree with the majority here as uninspiring as it is. PS2, GCN and OG Xbox are really feeling retro now.
PSP feels retro despite being a few years newer too though....
For me, the N64/PS1 generation is definitely retro at this point. You would probably have a pretty good argument for the PS2/GC/Xbox generation as well. I just have a hard time personally accepting that. I guess I am getting old.
Also, there is a pretty fair argument for everything not currently on sale brand new to be retro as well. I bought a Wii Remote with Motion Plus built in for my Wii U just a few months ago. I wanted to make sure I got an authentic Nintendo version. It was a little surprising just how difficult they are to find. Ebay was pretty much the only place I could find them.

Switch - Super Mario Maker 2 (2019)
3DS - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Trilogy) (2005/2014)
Mobile - Yugioh Duel Links (2017)

PC - Borderlands 2 (2012)
PC - Deep Rock Galactic (2020)
I still consider the retro-age to only be 2D systems - SNES/Genesis and earlier lol. PlayStation and N64 are the start of the "modern" age for me haha!
I voted 2 gens ago because I usually felt that way as a kid. But it's so hard to consider the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii retro.

Damn skippy, let the market decide what is retro. Good answer in my opinion.

Yeah if you'd asked me during the 7th or 8th gen I would've said two gens as well, but Wii/PS3/360 definitely don't feel retro yet for me; maybe that's cos the 9th gen consoles just came out, but I have a feeling it won't be until PS6/Xbox 5 that the 7th gen starts to feel truly like a different epoch.
A lot of that I think comes down to the fact that a template for a lot of modern AAA games hasn't changed much since the likes of Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 1/2, or Assassin's Creed 1/2.
