Japan really is the outlier in terms of software

But even with digital sales outselling physical ones 2:1 there still wouldn't be enough games sold to get to a ratio of just 1 game per console, which is abysmal no matter which way you try to turn it. It would need over 70% of the software sales to be digital in Japan just to break even with the hardware sales, which is still a pretty tall order in a country which values it's physical games much more than most other countries do.

The only way to know more would be if there's a regional split in the software earnings in Sony's latest financial report. Does anybody knows if that's specified and could get a link to verify?

Do you have any source that shows that Japan is predominantly still physical? The only source anyone gave me essentially confirmed digital growth but clarified developers could be leaving sales on the table if they under shipped at retail. For the Playstation platform in particular, digital sales have been trending above 50% for a few years now, so a 55% - 60% digital cut in Japan doesn't seem far fetched.

The software performance is not the best even with digital, but the PS5 has yet to get any Japanese centric software, with Resident Evil 8 being the first big one (which isn't that big compared to MH, FF & GT7), but comparing Sony's first party in particular, Miles Morales & Demon's Souls retail sales aren't far behind other PS4 titles in their first year, barring Knack that was bundled, and digital sales would put them comfortably above other first party PS4 software.

Sony doesn't provide regional data on their software earnings. The best we'd probably get is Sony clarifying the digital/physical split in Japan. We do know that the PS5 has sold 11% more software than the PS4 through a similar time frame though.

Momotaro just casually be selling like an evergreen first party game, when a year ago, let's be honest, most of us had never even heard of the series.

Along with Ring Fit, one of the big sales surprises of recent years, for me anyway.

Who tf knows, I'm just annoyed that you constantly put words in peoples mouths and according to you everyone who disagrees with you does so because they're Nintendo fans.

Do you think there is a console war going on here or what?

Also, is that 80% digital split only for the PS5 or for both PS4 and PS5 and do we have regional specific numbers? I want to know that since I just found a VGC article from two weeks ago where it said on PS4 and PS5 65% of sold games in the last fiscal year where digital, not 80%. So I want to know where that 80% came from.

Considering the amount of pushback I got for suggesting digital sales are higher than retail sales on the Playstation platform, which is supported by Sony financial reports, that is being argued against by mainly Nintendo fans (at least in this thread), makes me want to ask you all the same thing. Could my initial post have been better? Sure. But what's the point if users in this thread are arguing against official data anyway?

That 80% digital split is for Q4 of FY20 for the PS4/PS5, the digital split for FY20 for the PS4/5 is 65%, I could post the link again but many of you won't even bother to click it lol.

- One would imagine PS5 has a much higher digital ratio compared to PS4 and digital sales aren't tracked by famitsu.
- PS4 had more frequent software entries because it benefitted from PSVita ports that would frequently chart for a week or 2.
- PS4 had 2 very strong releases in its first 2 months (Battlefield 4 and MSGV) that kept charting. Surprisingly Battlefield is one of the biggest 3rd party titles in Japan, far bigger than COD for example.
- PS4 was not BC and didn't have PlayStation collection so inherently should have a slightly higher software attachment ratio as people needed to buy PS4 games to enjoy their console.

End year charts for PS4 in 2014 discounting Knack which was bundled:
1. MGSV (142k)
2.Yakuza, Ishin (137k)
3.Destiny ( 124k)
4.Battledfield 4 (118k)
5. Watchdogs (94k)

For comparison, I would wait to see how comparative software performs on PS5 this year: RE8, FFVII Integrade, next gen Battlefield, Tales of Arise etc. Of course PS5 matching PS4's sales would still result in smaller famistu numbers if a higher proportion of those sales are digital.

Its most likely the higher digital ratio, in line with the Sony financial reports for FY20, that some Nintendo fans in these threads can't accept. Either that, or the PS brand is inexplicably stronger in Japan despite the higher price point and lack of Japanese centric software, or the Dualsense is a system seller. Maybe its a combination of all of the above. I doubt BC is a huge difference maker at all though.

Do you seriously have no idea why some Nintendo fans pushed back at you?

You pretty much asked them to.  Had you just stuck with your point, which is about digital sales ratio, instead of trying to take a stealth jab at Nintendo fans, you probably would have been left alone.  By singling out Nintendo fans the way you did, it came across as more of a statement in regards to the imaginary console war that a vocal sect of all three camps often get caught up in.

Now you may not have intended it that way, but it is pretty obvious that you derailed your own point before a Nintendo fan even replied to you in the first place.

I love trains, party games, 18xx games, cube rails, etc. With have trains, I will play, videogame or boardgame. But I know I'm the exception. Japanese is my second language, no problems here.

Top 20

NSW - 17
PS4 - 3

Source: Resetera

Holy moly, that right there is domination.

80% of the top 20 on one platform, including 14 of the top 15.

Will be interesting to see how the current FY shapes up, with PS5 still establishing itself and PS4 fading out.

Normally I don't come to famitsu threads, but what's happening now?

Top 5 PS4/PS5 Games 2021 Famitsu

  1. [PS4] NieR Replicant (Square Enix) - 146.662
  2. [PS4] Resident Evil Village (Capcom) - 111.171 / NEW
  3. [PS5] Resident Evil Village (Capcom) - 38.713 / NEW
  4. [PS4] Little Nightmares II (Bandai Namco) - 24.968
  5. [PS4] Disgaea 6 (Nippon Ichi) - 18.289

TOTAL: 339.803

With the launch of Resident Evil: Village we are looking at less than 350K sales across the Top 5 PS4/PS5 games this year.

The next major game on the system is Scarlet Nexus, but after seeing the performance of Village not very optimistic that by mid-year PS4/PS5 games will be able to pass 500K sales.

Resident Evil Top Launches PS4:

  1. Resident Evil 2 (2019) - 265.324
  2. Resident Evil 7: biohazard (2017) - 231.188
  3. Resident Evil 3 (2020) - 189.490
  4. Resident Evil Village (2021) - 111.171 / NEW
  5. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (2015) - 40.749

In terms of Resident Evil: Village, the launch cements the overall decline of the franchise in Japan. It's the lowest debut of a mainline game and is slightly higher than the launch of Resident Evil: Revelations 2 the PS3/PS4 in 2015:

[PS3] Resident Evil: Revelations 2 - 73.074

[PS4] Resident Evil: Revelations 2 - 40.749

TOTAL: 113.823

As we can see the PS5 version is below what Revelations 2 achieved in 2015 on the PS4, digital can make up the gap but it's not a good look for a mainline entry.

When comparing mainline entries the launch of the franchise declined in terms of physical sales from 2017 by 35% going from 231K to 149K, the bigger questions are the legs since Resident Evil 7 achieved over 365K physical sales. Digital in 2017 on the PS4 won't be hugely different than what it is now, especially without a launch discount for the game and the fact that the secondhand market continues to be a huge factor in the country. Capcom have shipped 300K copies to Japan but it remains to be seen what the sell-through looked like on the PS4/PS5 tomorrow.

RE8 with digital for sure outsold Revelations 2 and on a much smaller userbase as well (PS5 versus 2015 PS4). Would be very interesting to see how it holds and whether it'll be the first PS5 game to maintain a weekly chart position and sell decent numbers alongside new hardware.

Regarding RE8 sell through, the game sold 40% less physical copies in the UK than RE7, but globally shipped more. So curious whether capcom overshipped or whether RE7 had a very low digital attach rate for whatever reason. Alternatively, its been a much bigger hit in the US versus Japan/UK.

Also do you not consider FFVII Intergrade to be the next major release on PS5?

you right, I forget about Intergrade coming out in June I thought it was a July release

That one will be interesting to watch but not expecting miracles.
