In terms of Resident Evil: Village, the launch cements the overall decline of the franchise in Japan. It's the lowest debut of a mainline game and is slightly higher than the launch of Resident Evil: Revelations 2 the PS3/PS4 in 2015:

[PS3] Resident Evil: Revelations 2 - 73.074

[PS4] Resident Evil: Revelations 2 - 40.749

TOTAL: 113.823

As we can see the PS5 version is below what Revelations 2 achieved in 2015 on the PS4, digital can make up the gap but it's not a good look for a mainline entry.

When comparing mainline entries the launch of the franchise declined in terms of physical sales from 2017 by 35% going from 231K to 149K, the bigger questions are the legs since Resident Evil 7 achieved over 365K physical sales. Digital in 2017 on the PS4 won't be hugely different than what it is now, especially without a launch discount for the game and the fact that the secondhand market continues to be a huge factor in the country. Capcom have shipped 300K copies to Japan but it remains to be seen what the sell-through looked like on the PS4/PS5 tomorrow.

RE8 with digital for sure outsold Revelations 2 and on a much smaller userbase as well (PS5 versus 2015 PS4). Would be very interesting to see how it holds and whether it'll be the first PS5 game to maintain a weekly chart position and sell decent numbers alongside new hardware.

Regarding RE8 sell through, the game sold 40% less physical copies in the UK than RE7, but globally shipped more. So curious whether capcom overshipped or whether RE7 had a very low digital attach rate for whatever reason. Alternatively, its been a much bigger hit in the US versus Japan/UK.

Also do you not consider FFVII Intergrade to be the next major release on PS5?
