So, 14 third party games sold over a million last FY, what do we suppose those are?

Minecraft and Monster Hunter Rise are a given, but what else?

Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa Mo Teiban! we know for certain is another of them

I would guess most likely Hades and Just Dance 2021 as well

Forgot about Momotaro, and yeah with the physical release Hades should be eligible, so Hades is likely. Maybe Ori and the Will of the Wisps as well?

That still leaves 8 spots though, and I'm a bit stumped trying to think of any other surefire ones.

Maybe Fifa 21, Just Dance 2020 and Human Fall Flat.

That means switch is making more money than the peak year of Wii + DS.

My bet would be on these:

  • Crash N Sane trilogy is always a big seller
  • Crash Racing
  • Spyro Trilogy
  • Hyrule Warriors (Japan + asia)
  • Overwatch
  • Minecraft
  • Mario and Rabbids
  • Monster Hunter Rise
  • Momotaru
  • Just Dance 2021
  • Hades

Maybe Borderlands? Doom Eternal? A party or fitness game? A lego game or two? Scratching my head here

AoC didn't sell a million where it's published by Koei Tecmo. 3.07mil outside of Japan, 3.7mil total.

Lego Harry Potter Collection sells especially good on the eshop and always charts in the UK for example, I think this could have sold a million.

Also with Mario + Rabbids I'm pretty sure they would have announced the 3mil milestone, since they did announce 2mil. I found somewhere (I forgot the source), that it reached 2.5mil at some point.

Also an interesting tidbit from Nintendo's IR site is that Super Mario 3D Land now sold 12.81mil copies and outsold Super Mario Galaxy at 12.8mil copies. Galaxy was the best selling 3D Mario game for years until Odyssey outsold it.

Another thing I find very interesting is this:

Looks like the Nintendo gamers also increasingly buy digital. And I strongly doubt the pandemic is the only reason for this, though it certainly supported this trend.

These numbers make it look that digital has a higher percentage of digital sales than there really are.

  1. These digital sales don't just include digital version of games with a physical version, but also digital only games, DLC and Switch online.
  2. These are not unit sales, but revenue. This means that the 42,8% don't mean that physical games sell 42,8% via the Eshop and codes, but the total revenue of Digital Versions + Digital only games + DLC + Switch Online makes up 42,8% of the revenue of all gaming and services income.

With the help of the right table we can at least exclude Digital only game + DLC + Switch online revenue. We know that physical games made up 57,2% of revenue. Of the digital revenue (42,8%) 59,3% did come from games that are also sold physically which means 25,3% of revenue was from digital versions of physical games. The digital share for physical games therefore is 25,3% / (57,2% + 25,3%) = 30,7%.

And this is based on revenue. Nintendo likely makes significantly more revenue on a digital sale than on a physical sale. I don't know exact numbers, but I think it is reasonable to assume that in terms of unit sales digital is still under or around 25% of total sales.

The amount being based on unit sales or revenue is insignificant and more importantly totally beside the point (I wasn't even looking at those numbers) when you have the percentages of the total sales to compare, and here there's a 8.8 percentage points increase YoY, from 34% of the revenue coming from digital sales in FY20 going up to 42.8% in FY21. And while a part of that increase is certainly due to Covid, I don't think it will drop below 40% anymore even after the pandemic is over.

Going through 2020's releases Two Point Hospital, Bioshock collection, Borderlands collection, Bloodstained 2, Shantae, Minecraft Dungeons, and Super Meat Boy Forever also seem like possibilities.

The Animal Crossing effect.

Not just Animal Crossing. The fact that you can buy a single copy of a physical version of a game and multiple people can play it on their terms (in bed, on the Living Room TV, in the car, etc) is a major selling point. It's why we have 4 Switches, my one brother has 4, my other brother has 3, etc.

Switch continues to sell like hotcakes... that march to #1 Hardware of all time is getting easier and easier...

But this begs the question, what are hotcakes and why are they selling so well?

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Do you really want to discuss it ?
