Yeah I agree, I don't see any reason why either would sell worse than their predecessor.

56 Million by the end of 2023, I never actually paid much attention to how much they would have to be down till just now. I mean thats three years and the first launch, which if I'm not mistaken, the PS4 nearly sold 56 million on its own in that time period, with 2013-16 totalling what 52 million?

Apparently PS4 alone was at 53.4 million after a similar amount of time.

Liquid laser chose the "56 million by the end of 2023" threshold, I just agreed to it.

I swore I'd never gamble, I've seen it do terrible things to family members.

But I don't often take bets; this is only the 9th one I've taken in over 11 years on VGChartz, so the fact I took it is indicative of how confident I was that I was right.

I think the original bet was that they'd do over 120 million combined by the end of their life, but liquid laser didn't want to wait 10 years or so for a result so he shortened it to 56 million by end of 2023.

I know about gambling addictions. My dad goes to the casino once a month if not more. Though he never takes more than he is willing to lose at least. Just slot machines to me get boring after like 20 minutes and table games are far too expensive.

I don't think I've ever done a bet here on VGChartz. Though as the guy that does the hardware estimates that wouldn't be right for me to do lol.

Yeah gambling is an evil evil thing and it's benefits are far outweighed by it's risks. A little dopamine hit and really bad odds aren't good enough a reason to gamble.

Just a guy who doesn't want to be bored. Also

On YouTube and in the Community a new narrative precedent has started regarding the sales of Nintendo Switch since it has a real chance to outsell the PS2: "Well, it's a handheld, handhelds always sell great because per family more than one is sold and it's cheaper than a home console, so, no big deal that it sells so great... ." First of all, who cares if someone sells a cheap handheld or an expensive home console? Every manufacturer has to make economic decisions of what's the best move forward, i.e. low, middle or high price sector. People always compared console sales and they are very much interested in the total sell-through numbers, the one with the highest number is declared the winner. It was always like that and always will be like that. Who cares if one product of a manufacturer is sold for a much cheaper price than the one from another manufacturer? And they forget that Nintendo's most successful handheld, the DS, couldn't outsell the PS2 and these sell-through numbers were compared back then. So, why all of a sudden, the Switch sell-through numbers can't be compared to the ones of the PS2? (The true comparison would be with the PS4 but as it doesn't stand a chance to win, a new narrative had to be found). It's just pathetic! I'm not even taking about Sony-Fanboys talking shit like that - what's their problem? They don't get a dime from Sony anyway (ah yeah, clickbait, I see, I see...)

Very interesting. And you post that here because ?

Like you said numbers have the final word (I don't know if this expression exist in english). Nintendo & Sony or Sony & Nintendo got massive console' success like no others. Why do you care about a post on Youtube ?

I just wanted it to mention because I can guarantee that if it would be the other way around, if Sony would dominate Nintendo (like in the past), nobody would have a problem to compare whatever product of Sony to whatever product of Nintendo. Nintendo is just always measured with different criteria. I can't stand it.

Personally, I compare home consoles with home consoles and handhelds with handhelds. However, of course, if there's a close race between a handheld and a home console, like we had with the DS and the PS2, it becomes interesting to compare the two as well. The Switch is neither a home console nor a handheld, it's a hybrid, the first of its kind. We have two options for comparisons: 1. Compare it to nothing (as there isn't any other hybrid) or 2. Compare it to PS4 and Xbox One (some want to compare it to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S but whatever...). Obviously, the 2nd choice is much more interesting;)

Looks like PS4 won't be outselling Gameboy after all :(

I think it can still manage to sell 119-120mil.

Actually looks like the PS4 probably will beat the Game Boy, although just barely. It might even hit 120M. Really depends on when Sony stops manufacturing it. They probably will keep it at least until 2022, which should give enough time for PS4 to reach 120M, assuming it averages about 1M per quarter.

I wonder if Sony & MS will keep the PS4 & Xbox One alive long enough for them to reach their 10 year anniversaries.

But if I'm not wrong last generation was PS4 / Wii U / Xbox One ?

So this gen is Switch / PS5 / Xbox Serie X|S no ?

----------------------

PS4 / Game Boy will be ultra close at Lifetime sales. It will be funny when the numbers will be almost the same .

I still think PS4 will outsell Gameboy.
I'm expecting Sony to discontinue it sometime in 2023 or potentially even 2024, (PS3 got 11 years of production) so it will keep trickling for some time to come, maybe even pass 120 million.

Gens are an archaic classification in regards to the multi brand console market, it just doesn't work, one console may be competing with multiple iterations of the same brand, little is in sync as it once was

Yeah but 1 million shipped in 3 months just after the release of the PS5 ? That's waaay to low, I don't know if they'll keep shipping 1 million until Q3 until the end of PS5 shortages
