Or maybe we just have an understanding of technology that you do not.

Is a new dock needed for 4k/60 or just an upgraded tablet?

Tegra X1 itself supports 4k, 60fps.
So the limitation is elsewhere in the device that limits it to 1080P output.

The Switch itself outputs Displayport over USB-C and the Dock converts that into HDMI, the Dock is just a "dumb device" for all intents and purposes...
The real issue is actually USB on the Switch. - It just does not have the bandwidth to output full 4k, 60fps whilst providing full bandwidth to the USB ports in the dock, so something had to give... And Nintendo made the decision to cap it at 1080P, 60fps.

A revision is likely to rectify that limitation, but the converter in the dock (May or may not) also need some reworking in order to convert the higher resolution output.

So in short, the tablet and dock should both need to be upgraded.

They just ignoring Nate Leak. This is a bias  analysis per see

Nate had no issue with their video. DF can only go by whatever source they have. John Linneman from DF has been on his podcast. Side note: People need to sign up to Nates channel. He and MVG do the Nate The Hate podcast and its really good.

Leaks are unsubstantiated and not from an empirical source of truth.

If you want to believe a rumor/leak... That is entirely your prerogative, but something I cannot possibly adhere to.

The amount of "legitimate" leaks we got about the Switch is actually comedy central if you look back on the old threads.

Thanks Pem. Looking at other USB to HDMI hubs that are compatible with NS, the max supported seems to be 4k@30fps.

HDMI 1.4 does 10.2Gbps to push out 4k, 30fps... And the Switch is USB 3.0 which if I remember correctly which is limited to about 5Gbps, which is perfect for 1080P.
You could do 4k on that link with chroma subsampling and some clever encoding, but not ideal... I guess Nintendo decided to upgrade that link entirely for full fat 4k 60.

Nate is good insider. and other two sources confirms Nate leaks.

Again. I don't do rumors, leaks, unsubstantiated claims.
Doesn't matter how "credible" a source may seem to be, things can and have changed before a products release.

And just because someone guessed right in the past, doesn't mean they will be correct in the future.

Digital Foundry are just basing their assertions on public information, which is the right way to go about it, otherwise they end up loosing credibility and just being another "Red Gaming Tech" outlet.

Interesting speculation, and it would be great if it were true. This is basically everything that Nintendo gamers could ask for and I assume that this would make the Switch a viable candidate for PS5/XSX ports which would be enormous for Nintendo and the first time that we have seen this level of technical capability since the Gamecube. If Nintendo did this right, they could regain third parties in a way that we haven't seen since the SNES days.

This rumor would also certainly explain the lack of Nintendo 1st party support as of late as I am sure that Nintendo would want to announce BotW2, Metroid Prime 4 and other big titles to showcase the upgraded graphics. That said, it just seems like a complete 180 from Nintendo's current attitude of complacency. I hate to say it, but I think the only way that we would see a launch like this would be if Switch sales start to diminish significantly and it was affecting Nintendo's investment outlook for at least a year. Right now, Nintendo seems happy to just slack off and roll in the cash. It is a very foolish attitude that has hurt Nintendo in the past and I hope that I am wrong and that this rumor turns out to be true. This rumor would be an extremely smart move for Nintendo and would really give them an edge to compete with the PS5/XSX, the former of which will probably start to overtake the Switch in sales potentially this Christmas season or sometime next year.

Agreed.

And the historical upgrades for Nintendo HANDHELDS have power upgrades. DS, 3DS, GB-GBC. DF forget all.

Just release it already so I can throw my money at it.
