Switch vs Xbox One in the US Sales Comparison – Switch Closes Gap By Nearly 2M in December 2020

This monthly series compares the lifetime US sales of the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.

Switch Vs. Xbox One US:

Gap change in latest month: 1,852,227 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 7,608,581 - Switch

Total Lead: 2,946,534 - Xbox One

Switch Total Sales: 26,340,217

Xbox One Total Sales: 29,286,751

December 2020 is the 46th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the gap shrunk in favor of the Switch by 1.85 million units when compared to the Xbox One. In the last 12 months, the Switch has caught up to the lifetime sales of the Xbox One in the US by 7.61 million units. The Switch is currently 2.95 million units behind the lifetime Xbox One sales in the US.

The Xbox One launched in November 2013, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. To date the Switch has sold 26.34 million units, while the Xbox One has sold 29.29 million units.

If you were to align the launches of the two consoles in the US the Switch would be ahead by 9.19 million units, as the Xbox One had sold 17.15 million units through 45 months.

Xbox One won't be moving much from now on, so Switch's rate of gain should increase this year. From the 360's dominance in America, the Xbox brand will end up in third place there soon, unless the Xbox Series can somehow manage to gain the edge over PS5.

I think the Switch will outsell the Xbox One life time sales in the US in Q3 this year. Most likely before September.

The 360 wasn't dominant in the USA and only passed the Wii when the generation was already over and all consoles replaced.

The Xbox One didn't finish far behind the PS4 in the USA despite severe beatings in other countries of the world. It was also far ahead of the Wii U, so its second place finish was never in danger.

The chances that XBS finishes in second place in the USA this generation are reasonably good.

Lastly, you owned a 3DS yourself. You should be able to tell that the 3DS and Switch don't belong to the same generation.

I wasn't talking about consoles winning/belonging in certain generations are more in general about brands; right now both PS and Nintendo seem to have more swing in America than Xbox, unless XBS has managed to lead PS5 there while I wasn't looking.

How are the chances for XBS to finish in second place reasonably good? The Xbox One sold less than 30mil units and I don't see the XBS do more eve n though it didn't stumble. All their exclusives are also on PC and Xcloud could pull some customers away from buying the console. Apart from that the PS5 will very likely sell similar to the PS4 or a bit less, since the PS4 didn't have that much competition. That's still above 30mil. The Switch will end up way above 40mil. How do you see XBS outsell the PS5 in the US?

Switch vs 3DS in Japan Sales Comparison - Switch Takes the Lead in December 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS.

There it is!  This is the closest thing I can find to Switch sales falling off a cliff.  Of course, it flew out of the cliff even faster than it fell down.  This graph has a relative peak at month 10, and then it hits rock bottom at month 32.  That is a 22 month difference.  From that bottom to the current month is a 14 month difference.  In Japan Swich majorly lost ground against 3DS for 22 months but then recovered basically the same amount in 14 months.

Even in the one case where it might be argued that Switch sales fell off a cliff, it flew out of that cliff even faster than it fell down.  That isn't really even flight.  It's a rocket!

Switch vs 3DS in Japan Sales Comparison - Switch Takes the Lead in December 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS.

Switch Vs. 3DS Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 979,901 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,168,638 - Switch

Total Lead: 533,957 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 17,714,460

3DS Total Sales: 17,180,503

December 2020 is the 46th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch closed the gap to the 3DS by 979,901 units when you align the launches. In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the 3DS by 3.17 million units. The 3DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 533,957 units.

The 3DS launched in February 2011 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles are off by one month.

The 46th month for the Switch is December 2020, while for the 3DS it is November 2014. The Switch has sold 17.71 million units, while the 3DS sold 17.18 million units during the same timeframe.

The 3DS has sold 24.64 million units lifetime in Japan through December 2020. The Switch is currently 6.93 million units behind the lifetime sales of the 3DS.

About time. 3DS had the advantage of being so much cheaper and Japanese thirds going all in on it much sooner, but Switch has managed to catch up regardless, and this is before Monster Hunter Rise hits, which will kick on the afterburners for Switch in Japan.

Switch vs PS3 Sales Comparison in Europe - Switch Lead Grows in December 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 3.

Switch Vs. PS3 Europe:

Gap change in latest month: 68,540 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,038,632 - Switch

Total Lead: 2,119,173 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 20,297,061

PS3 Total Sales: 18,177,888

December 2020 is the 46th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch grew its lead by 68,540 units when you align the launches of it with the PlayStation 3. In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the PlayStation 3 by 2.04 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the PlayStation 3 by 2.12 million units.

The PlayStation 3 launched in Europe in March 2007, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

The 46th month for the Nintendo Switch in Europe is December 2020 and for the PlayStation 3 it is December 2010. The Switch has sold 20.30 million units, while the PlayStation 3 has sold 18.18 million units during the same timeframe. The PlayStation 3 did not reach current Switch sales until month 52.

The PlayStation 3 sold 34.99 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 14.69 million units to catch up to the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3.

This looks like a real good matchup.  Both systems launched in March and were basically neck-in-neck until COVID hit.  It will be interesting to see what happens to sales in this matchup once COVID is over, especially since the PS3 still has pretty good legs from this point on.  I personally think Switch is going to outleg the PS3, but we won't really have a good idea for sure until about a year from now (i.e. COVID is over + another holiday period).

Beating a Playstation console in Sonyland is no small feat; Switch is ahead for now but it remains to be seen how it's legs play out.

Europe will be the major region Switch does the worst in but with the mid 30's looking like the minimum it'll do there it'll still do at least quite well in its worst region which says a lot.

When you say worst region I take it in terms of other consoles within that region, as I'd have to agree. As it stands now it looks like the switch could be somewhere in the top 5 for North America, being just 13 million or so out of it, near garunteed top 3 in Japan with a mere 6.5 million behind the 3DS, and top 3 in the rest of the world being about 5 million behind the PSP (10 million vs 15 million). Though the rest of world to me is probably the most unpredictable, as the switch picked up a lot more seam than I was expecting from that reigon last year, selling a little over 5 million should memory stand correct from PAOwerful's thread.
