I recently beat Ring Fit Adventure. Started on January 2021, finished on November 2021. Definitely a good work out overall.

Just Finished: WarioWare Gold (3DS)

I admit this series is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I paid over MSRP for a physical copy (twice actually o.O). It is really a deluxe compilation of WarioWare microgames from Warioware, Touched, and Twist with a few new ones sprinkled in. Some of the visuals have been jazzed up as well. I enjoy the quirky aesthetic and humor. The story mode only took about 3 hours to clear. The story vignettes are mildly amusing. I enjoy the games with touch controls the most. Some instructions are vague and make the games unenjoyable. The game makes no use of the 3D screen at all, which again goes to show that it was a failed gimmick. I'm not sure how often I will go back to explore more of the game. The game seems to be quite rare physically so hopefully I can get a good resale price down the line.

Just Finished: Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus (PS Now)

It bugs me that the title is not a crude pun. This game was a surprise announcement for the end of the PS3's life that got overshadowed by the PS4's launch. In terms of scale it not quite as long as A Crack in Time but more substantial than Quest for Booty. I give credit to Insomniac for not phoning this one in. They actually crafted a somewhat unique gameplay experience and a satisfying story. The Clank sections here are partly interesting but partly annoying. The humor is still well written and performed. The graphics are nice, the gameplay is breezy, and the whole experience does not take too long to complete. It was nice little snack of a game but not mindblowing. Hopefully by this time next year I will have a PS5 of my own and be able to play Rift Apart.

Around the Network
  • Indivisible (PS4) (8/10) Indivisible is an audiovisually gorgeous game. The music and art style are both wonderful, and the story and characters are interesting and well-written. I think the only slight issue is the gameplay. The game combines 2D action platforming with RPG elements and turn-based combat. All the different gameplay elements are good, but none of them are really anything special. The battle system is fun, the platforming is fine, but neither is great.
  • Tales of Berseria (PS4) (9/10) I have to think about it a little longer, but as of right now I might have a new favourite Tales-game. At the very least Tales of Berseria is one of the three best games in the series alongside Xillia and Symphonia. I loved the main cast, the story and gameplay of Berseria, quite possibly more than in any other of the games in the series that I've played thus far.
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PS4) (8/10) The new Tomb Raider games have all been very enjoyable, and overall a great reboot for Lara Croft but none of the three quite reached the heights I expected of them. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is no different. A very good game, that falls just short of greatness. The gameplay is a lot of fun, but does nothing really new or original, the story is well-told but ultimately forgettable, and Lara as a character never really becomes as compelling as I think the developer wanted her to.
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (PC) (9.5/10) I finally got around to replaying Trails in the Sky after first playing through it back in 2015, and it's just as great now as it was back then. The story, characters, gameplay and music are all excellent. The Legend of Heroes is today my third favourite video game franchise of all time, behind only Final Fantasy and Dark Souls, and this game is a big reason for that.
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (PC) (9.5/10) Continuing from the first game, I've been playing through the whole series, and now that I have I think this is my favourite game in the whole series thus far. It picks up pretty much immediately after the end of the first game, gives each character more depth, improves on the gameplay while still keeping the core familiar, and overall just is an excellent game.
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd (PC) (9/10) And still staying with Trails. This was my first time playing the final game in this trilogy, and although it is the weakest game of the three it was still a highly enjoyable experience. Swapping a pair of new characters into the lead, while keeping pretty much all of the old ones around in supporting roles, it doesn't quite reach the heights of the story that was wrapped in the second game. Still a great game regardless.
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (PS4) (9/10) After I finished the Trails in the Sky-trilogy, I decided to just stay with the series, and play through the four Cold Steel-games as well. This was my 2nd time playing Cold Steel 1, and it's still just as great as when I first played it. Memorable character, great story, fun battle system and excellent soundtrack are all still here. Just a few minor issues keep it from being quite on par with the first two Trails in the Sky games, but it's very close.
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (PS4) (9.5/10)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III (PS4 (9/10)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV (PS4) (9.5/10) Just going to lump all the rest of these here together, since I played them one after another. Overall, the Trails-games have become one of my all-time favourite series of video games, behind only Final Fantasy and Dark Souls. I finally got around to finishing all the games that have so far been released in the west, and they are all excellent. Trying to put them into specific order is really difficult, but I enjoyed every moment I spent playing through these seven games, even though it did take me quite a few months to do so because of my work. Then again, the shortest of these games took me 35 hours to completely, and the longest went well over 100 hours, so it's not exactly a surprise it took a while to play them all.
  • Shadwen (PC) (6/10) Better as a concept than in execution. Frozenbyte always seems to struggle when they make 3D games, while their 2D titles are almost always excellent. It's a shame too, because the basic premise and idea behind Shadwen is very interesting, and the stealth gameplay had potential had it been implemented properly. It just never comes together in a way you'd hope.

Just Finished: Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled (PS4)

I bought this game the day it came out. Started playing it soon after. I only just got around to completing it though. I was enjoying the game but I got stuck on a particular race in the Adventure Mode. I tried playing the game on the Classic difficulty setting. I feel a gamer of my skill level should have been able to clear the game in that mode, yet I hit a wall where I just couldn't win one of the races. I cannot adopt the racing style where you just drift boost for the whole race. The rubber band AI is also bad and the enemies always seem to nail you with an item just before you win. Wanting to clear the game out of my backlog I switched the Easy difficulty. It was definitely easier to beat but I still lost a few races along the way. The Adventure mode doesn't last long if you just want to compete the 16 races and boss faceoffs. However there is a lot of extra goals to go for.  Of course I didn't do any of that. The loading times are atrocious (playing on original model PS4). The graphics and the animation are stellar. The tracks are fun and so are the items. It is great they included tracks from the original and Nitro Kart. I only sampeld the online play. Activision turned this game into a microtransaction fest, even though you could earn the unlockables your own with enough grinding. All the other extra gameplay modes offer nice variety. This is a worthy competitor to Mario Kart, but Mario Kart's mechanics are more forgiving and accessible. There are a lot of obscure Crash characters that I don't care about. I have now played all three of the major Crash releases of this generation. It felt so good to have Crash back at his former glory.
