Well I only know the standard is that the Thursday of a week determines what year it's in since that's considered the middle. I don't know for a fact if Famitsu follows this or not though.

The best answer I could find is that Famitsu counts something towards January even in the event that only a single day of the week in question falls into January, so this means Famitsu's next 53-week-year will be in 2023. Week 1 of the tracking year 2023 will cover December 26th 2022 to January 1st 2023, so December 25th 2023 to December 31st 2023 will be week 53.

Therefore December 28th 2020 to January 3rd 2021 will be week 1 of Famitsu's 2021 tracking period, making 2020 a 52-week-year.

Ahh alrighty then. Now I'm wondering if vgchartz uses that system as well for its yearly totals, but I suppose we'll know soon enough.

PS4 - 2

I'm starting to wonder if the Switch might actually pull a sweep in the coming months. Not a ton coming up for either PlayStation console.

We will get more data when Famitsu releases their Top 100 and a lot of games released earlier in the year get their numbers updated.

You can look at Gamesdatalibrary and filter the game search by 2020, the last time the games were updated was around August.

Out of the 110 Games launched this year that charted on Famitsu until August 59 were on the Switch, 51 on the PS4.

For sure, there is nothing really launching on the PS4/PS5 in the next couple of months that I think can actually surpass 100K

That really puts the PS5 sales into perspective.

I knew PS4 and PS5 launched much worse than the Wii U, but seeing the PS5 not being able to keep up with it's predecessor truly ain't a good sign so far.

I mean, if I remember correctly, it took untill around the switch's official announcement for the ps4 to surpass the Wii U in LTD, thanks in part to the absolutly MASSIVE splatoon wave in japan and also in part to the wii U being essentially ahead 2 holidays in jp

Yes, but launch-aligned, the PS4 took only about a year to catch up to the Wii U's sales. It looks like for the PS5, it will take somewhat more than one year to reach Wii U numbers launch-aligned. As for how much, we'll need to see over the next couple weeks, and more specifically January/February (when stocks should have catched up to demand) to have a clearer idea for the outlook of the console in Japan.

Post holiday sales will really tell us of how the situation is shaping up but that said two 11k weeks in a launch holiday period for the PS brand is an eye opener especially when you factor in that the first major release on a competitive platform it's going to be dealing with in the region is Monster Hunter in the next quarter.
