Forums - Sales Discussion - Global Hardware Nov 15 to 21 - PS5 Launches in Europe to Record Sales

Well the theory of the Switch falling off a cliff after the PS5 and XSX launch is now debunked at least.

I thought that was settled when the switch launch didnt affect ps4 and xb1 sales.  It shouldnt be any different now.

NSW vs. NDS/Wii Peaks (VG Chartz Data)

Black Friday week is next.  Last year the Switch did just under 1.9M, so 2M looks like a good bet (USA increase alone should carry it over).  Flat for the rest of the year gets us past 28M now, without considering potential November adjustments (NPD release next week).

Quarter 4 performance added to the above chart. Note that 2007 and 2009 had Black Friday during W47 instead of W48, so NSW appears to be making a run at the record there as well, next week will be a big jump of >2-2.5M, so it can net 700-1,200K over 2007. 2008 had an additional week included in the yearly total, W53 crossing between Dec/Jan with 770K. NSW is ahead of that pace and may also be getting a 53 week count.

Exceptional start for the PS5, let's see how long it can keep the fastest selling console crown. Probably going to get body-slammed by the Wii after 12-14 months like the PS4 was, but still, keep ahead of the PS4!

First 12 months (VGC)

Switch - 15,099,220
Wii - 14,519,705
3DS - 14,361,871
PS4 - 14,238,195
DS - 9,290,236

It'll be interesting to see where PS5 ends up after its first year.

It should have been settled then but that didn't stop people from saying it until recently.

That's the thing, it's like The Cliff, you'd think it'd long since been settled yet that hasn't stopped it being regularly predicted to this day.

On IGN's forums there's a guy still convinced that Nintendo needs to respond with a price cut and Pro model in 2021 or Switch will die out overnight due to PS5 and XS.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023. (And over 130 million lifetime)

So switch may be at 80+m at the end of fiscal year

I would rather say by the end of the calendar year. The Switch was, on September 30th, at 68 million units shipped so there is no way they won't reach 80 million by December 31st.

We are living in historic times.  There are 6 systems listed in the OP and they are all in short supply.  The second place system sold 800k+ and we aren't even to Black Friday numbers yet.  I know people hate 2020 for a lot of reasons, but it's been a good year for anyone in the video game business (including scalpers).

Next week is Black Friday.  The real fun is about to begin.

Last week of semi-sanity before the Switch goes into rage mode. The next month is going to be absolutely bonkers.

Kudos to Trunks for getting us back up to pace so quickly, your efforts are as always greatly appreciated. Will we be back to Thursday updates for the week before's numbers from here on, or will the new consoles make that difficult?

Will be crazy.  On the high end, Switch will cross 10-11M in the final 6 weeks of the year.

PS5 seems too low. So UK alone was 30%? Germany and France alone should have 400k between them.
