Another set of hints:

#34

-A retelling/a loose adaptation of the novel Journey to the West

-Set in a post-apocalyptic earth

-Monkey

-Trip

#33

-Picks up 18 months after the events of the previous game, the main character is now a teacher at his old military school

-The story of the series surrounds the re-emergence of ancient, sentient war machines, one of which is piloted by the main character.

-Osborne, Ouroboros and the Gnomes working together

-The 3rd game in the series. The 2nd was already on my list earlier.

43. Kingdom Hearts
guessed by UnderwaterFunktown

Nowadays, I am much more open to two series getting mashed-up together.  But when this game was first announced I was skeptical.  Disney + Final Fantasy?  How is that going to work.  In lesser hands it probably would not have worked.  But Squaresoft was still in it’s magical period where it seemed like they could do no wrong.  So, they brought forth this amazing game which is probably more like a Disney game with a few Final Fantasy elements.  The game has to be experienced to appreciate how truly great it is.

42. Hyrule Warriors
guessed by Jpcc86

Speaking of mashups, here is another great one featuring Zelda + Dynasty Warriors.  For an old schooler like me, I really miss exciting combat in a Zelda game.  Meanwhile, I always found the Warriors games to be fun, but after a while I get tired of the same ancient Chinese setting.  This game is like chocolate and peanut butter coming together.  It has the fun mechanics of a Warriors game in the epic setting of Hyrule.  This game is the best of both worlds.  (Yes, I’ve got Age of Calamity coming in the mail.  Can’t wait!)

41. Pixeljunk Monsters
guessed by Mnementh

I originally bought my PS3 in 2008, and I had a hard time finding physical release games that I wanted to play.  I heard this digital only title “Pixeljunk Monsters” was good, so I decided to give it a try.  What I found is probably the best tower defense game I’ve ever played.  The game is great for creating a sense of flow.  I just play and get into the zone and before I know it hours have gone by.  It’s a simple looking, but highly polished experience.

40. Adventure
guessed by Bofferbrauer2

Zelda may very well be my favorite franchise, but even before Zelda, there was Adventure.  Even with the primitive capabilities of the Atari 2600, Warren Robinett was able to construct a game with swords, dragons, exploration, and many items.  All of this set you on a quest to get the holy grail (or golden chalice, same thing).  I still get this game out and play it from time to time.  The thing that fascinates me the most is that this game is built with a randomizer.  No two games are exactly the same when you use it.  It potentially has infinite replayability.  I have dreams that Nintendo will remaster Zelda 1 with a really good randomizer.  Until that happens Adventure will always have this one unique ability that I can’t get in another fantasy action-adventure game.

More hints:

35 - We couldn't figure out how to follow on from the last game's story, so we'll pretend you actually failed the campaign and Earth was conquered - and go from there. The newest entry in this series had a somewhat mixed reception (though I enjoy it) and featured the chance to team up with some of your former enemies to protect a revolutionary new city where humans and aliens live and work together. This is a turn-based strategy game where most missions entail landing from a dropship and capturing some kind of objective (I really can't make this any easier)

34 - A new open-world twist on a long-running series, this game allows you to build up an organisation by violently attaching people and hardware to parachutes.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (guessed by Jpcc86)

33 - This game's predecessor revolutionised third-person melee combat (and its style has been copied many times), and this game takes that combat to a much more open setting. It's not a Souls game.

32 - This latest entry in a beloved series sees you take control of a trio of protagonists with little in common who work together to organise a sequence of heists.

31 - Nobody particularly liked this game's predecessor, so this game threw out the concept and characters while keeping the same setting. The true ending is notoriously difficult to find, so only a very small percentage of players ever saw it.

#35: I don't know much about the modern XCOM, but it all sounds very much XCOM, so I assume it is XCOM2 from the reboot series.

#36 Assassin's Creed Odyssey
guessed by Jpcc86
platform Stadia
release year 2018
developer/publisher Ubisoft
genre action adventure
links Wikipedia, Mobygames

I played a few Assassin's Creed games, but became burned out by them quickly, as they released in too rapid succession with too little changes. So I stopped playing them. but there was one I couldn't sit out. As I am since childhood a fan of ancient greek mythology I couldn't pass up a game set there.

And as it turns out, after staying away from Assassin's Creed for a while, the basic formula is fun again. Exploring the lands, solving side-quests, gathering materials for my ship. Sometimes I have fun in ship combat. Or exploring ruins or shipwrecks underwater. This is all great.

I don't actually care much about the main story though. And I am not a fan of the big battles. They feel more like a chore than fun (in difference to Warriors game, where bashing hundreds of enemy and change the flow of battle is actual fun). But I do very much enjoy being an Assassin: sneaking into the commanders house, murdering the commander in the sleep, stealing stuff while being there and flee unseen. That is great fun and I enjoy it every time. I also like the mercenaries set on your path, they spice things up. It is a thrill trying to avoid them, sneaking around them or battling a few of them.

I also liked the realism of the setting. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect games to be realistic (I expect to have a lot of fun with Fenyx Rising later this year, which will use the same basic roots, but being way more phantastic). But I could enjoy see people live their live and the depiction of ancient greece being somewhat true to the actual history. For that I also liked that the game has virtual museum tours through ancient greece, connected with photographs of actual exponats from museums. Watching these tours and then see how this is reflected in the actual game is kinda cool. I still enjoy very unrealistic games though, but having a few connected to the actual world and learn something is sometimes also fun.

And an area that was great were the visuals. The mediterrean landscapes modeled in the game are gorgeous, and climbing a viewing spot to take in the surrounding feels pretty good.

So, enjoying my experience with the game I learned that Assassin's Creeds formula is fun, if you don't overdo it.

The game is available on PS4, XBox One, Windows PC and Stadia. I played it on Stadia, simply because that is the platform available to me.

#33 The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III

Correct.

No takers for my second hints I guess. I'll post these shortly, in like a few hours, but maybe there's still a quick guess on one, so here's a third hint;

40: Greece, Egypt, Norway, Atlantis. Guessed by Jpcc86 - Age of Mythology

39: This game initially featured the anthem of a rather shady historical government, but this was removed in later releases. Guessed by Jpcc86 - Wolfenstein 3D

38: The first game in the series to feature master tracks, where the previous two featured only covers. Guessed by Runa216 - Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

37: Because of your actions at the start of the game, your biggest enemy helps you survive just before you almost perish at the end.

Hint 2: Which is especially surprising since the one that helps is an infant.

Hint 3: It helps you by giving you terrible power strong enough to destroy the final boss.

36: I don't have many prequels and sequels in my list, especially not this close to each other, but this turn-based strategy game deserves it.

Hint 2: Besides the big decade long graphical difference, the biggest difference in gameplay is the fact that the main faction doesn’t consist of just one like in the newer game already featured in my list, but rather four, of which three are playable.

Hint 3: I recently watched a series on Netflix called 'Barbaren'. Actually pretty decent, though you'll have to watch it in the original German/Latin language instead of the dubbed English, but anyway, the big battle at the end of the season which pretty much turned the tide of history is one you can also play in this game. Guessed by Mnementh - Rome: Total War

#36 must be Total War:Rome, as the germanic barbarians fought rome.

Indeed it is. The series ends with the Battle of the Teutoburger Forest, one of the battles playable in the side-modes of this game.

Well, maybe I need to watch this Netflix series. I am not too keen on german TV or movies (as a german), as they are often shallow and unoriginal (much in difference to french movies). But there are exceptions, and so far Netflix proofed to mostly find the pearls.

Also, why not watch a take on Armin, the terrorist leader who brought down the roman army who wanted nothing else than bringing order and peace. Or so. (-;
