what happened in october 2013 to wii that made PS4 sales level for the month ? (with doing way worse the previous months)

It's not the Wii that's the issue; It's the PS4. It only sold 39K in the US in October.

The Switch vs. 3DS charts are so interesting. Switch looked like it was going to sell like the 3DS for almost 2 years just going by the data alone. That is what I call Switch in caterpillar mode. Now Switch is in butterfly mode. It came out of it's shell and now we are seeing it's true form. It just keeps flying higher and higher.

Be careful with your analogies. Butterflies are short lived.

Switch vs 3DS in Japan Sales Comparison - Gap Drops Below 500,000 in October 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS.

Switch Vs. 3DS Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 281,573 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,791,956 - Switch

Total Lead: 491,944 - 3DS

Switch Total Sales: 15,836,461

3DS Total Sales: 16,328,405

October 2020 is the 44th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch closed the gap to the 3DS by 281,573 units when you align the launches. In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the 3DS by 2.79 million units. The 3DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 491,944 units.

The 3DS launched in February 2011 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles are off by one month.

The 44th month for the Switch is October 2020, while for the 3DS it is September 2014. The Switch has sold 15.84 million units, while the 3DS sold 16.32 million units during the same timeframe. The 3DS sold current Switch totals in month 42 where it had sold 15.99 million units.

The 3DS has sold 24.64 million units lifetime in Japan through October 2020. The Switch is currently 8.80 million units behind the lifetime sales of the 3DS.

3DS had a really good lead for several years, but with holidays coming up, this contest is going to permanently go to the Switch.

3DS played its low price for an early lead but it just doesn't have the stamina to keep up with Switch in the long run, even in Japan.
In the last month, Switch has gained by more than half of what 3DS is ahead by; with the holidays looming, Switch should take the lead soon and never look back.

PS4 vs PS3 in Japan Sales Comparison - PS4 Falls Further Behind in October 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 3.

PS4 Vs. PS3 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 25,844 - PS3

Gap change over last 12 months: 291,106 - PS3

Total Lead: 179,413 – PS3

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 9,243,230

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 9,422,643

October 2020 is the 81st month of the PlayStation 4 being on sale in Japan. The gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 3 by 25,844 units in the last month and in favor of the PlayStation 3 by 291,106 units in the last 12 months. The PlayStation 3 now leads by 179,413 units.

The PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

The 81st month for the PlayStation 4 is October 2020, while for the PlayStation 3 it is July 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 9.24 million units, while its predecessor the PlayStation 3 sold 9.42 million units.

The PS3 sold 10.47 million units lifetime in Japan. The PS4 is currently 1.23 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS3.

With each passing month it's looking more and more certain PS4 will fall short of PS3.

With its current pace of sales, 1.23 million more just doesn't seem doable, especially now it's been replaced.

I guess you had to make up for your recent revelation with this post here. For everyone else it has been clear since spring that the PS4 stands no chance at passing the PS3. In spring it became a question of the PS4 being able to clear 10m, but since the point where its weekly sales dropped to sub-5k levels, that became impossible too. Now it's looking very likely that the PS4 won't even manage the once again lowered expectation of getting to 9.5m lifetime. So even another ~250k are a longshot at this point.

I didn't wanna come off as rubbing it in I guess. But yeah, the ship has long since sailed, question now is whether PS5 will continue the decline.

I guess it is about time to drop some of the Gap Charts now that I'll be adding a bunch of new ones soon with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S out.

Any chance you could do some with multiple consoles on rather than just 2. Just as a one off maybe after December to show launch aligned DS/PS4/Wii/PS3/X360/PSP/NS/3DS/X1 (1 per region)

what are dropping now ?

don't remove the close battles, or the interesting ones, such as PS3&360 vs PS4&XB1, or PS4 vs Wii in US, or PS4 vs DS.

Interesting ones are staying. It is just a few of them are clearly over and I need to make room for a bunch of new ones.

Which ones will be going?

Probably PS3 vs PS4 in Japan off the top of my head.

So seems Switch will have passed 3DS+WiiU Lifetime US sales until March 31st 2021 very latest. 6.37 million should be more than possible from november 2020 till march 2021.
