Resident Evil- I blame edgy American localization for this one. Resident Evil always seemed to imply something supernatural to me. The horror really comes about more because of science run amok. The Japanese title Biohazard makes a bit more sense to me but even then it seems to convey something about medicine rather than zombies.

The first game took place in a mansion.  A residence...  Where they performed evil experiments.  The "Zombies" in resident evil aren't actually zombies, as stated in the game itself.  They're bio-weapons, who've been infected by the T-Virus, which is man-made for creating obedient super soldiers.  Not everyone infected with the T-virus becomes a Tyrant, like Mr. X, or Nemesis.  Those people become zombies.  Given that the game is about bio-weapons and viruses, the name Biohazard makes sense.

Just one game (and its various releases), but the Under Night games have absolute nonsense titles:

Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late [cl-r]

Just, no...

Oh, I got another. The eXceed series has some strange titles

eXceed 3rd - Jade Penetrate Black Package is an....interesting name for a game

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance.

Like, wtf.

Kingdom hearts as a whole could apply for the top 3 in most nonsensical titles.

Other nonsense:

Dungeon Siege series. Seems like they didn't know what a siege actually is. By the title you would have to wait in front of the Dungeon and besiege it until it runs out of food and supplies. But no, you go in and hack&slash the bejesus out of almost everything that moves.

Completely agree on Bravely Default and TLOZ, specially in The Legend of ZeldaLink's Awakening.

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, that whole thing is a mess.

A lot of franchise titles made sense at the time like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Mario Kart, etc. but have lost meaning over time, yet it makes sense to keep games under the franchise for brand recognition and appeal

Ones that doesn't make sense to me is Rune Factory and Harvest Moon. Take a guess for what type of game it is since there are no runes and factories in the game. A Harvest Moon is associated to the moon rather than the harvesting or farming aspect, so it is an intriguing choice. Story of Seasons is definitely more fitting

Street Fighter.

Definitely does not imply anything to do with people using all sorts of crazy magical powers.

If you take the title literally:

Well, the title could be considered a spoiler

Spoiler!
The whole adventure in that game is just a dream. A dream from which he must wake up, and the only way to do so is to beat it.

Well yeah, but I mentioned it because Zelda is not part of the game. At all.

Ya Resident Evil for me. Zombies aren’t inherently evil, they just seek food.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Was "resident evil" a phrase before the game? I tried to Google it but I'm coming up with nothing. I do remember a quote from an old Outkast song from the ATLiens album that says: "The resident evil specialised in misconstruing"

I always assumed it meant the evil people in power or something like that. The game and the song both came out in 1996, though.
