Forums - Nintendo - Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct

I'm not buying a goddamn thing from this, "How can we make as much money as possible with the most little effort " 35th Annivesary. There are a few members in support of the dark abyss thread in here... praising this? The real dark abyss is that Nintendo may be becoming so arrogant from the Switch's success that they are blatantly scamming consumers.

Wait, they couldn´t even bother to get Mario 64 to run in widescreen mode?...is that true?....some incredibly low effort there.

People are saying this is emulation and not a port for Mario 64 so yeah, kinda lazy. Especially considering we know Nintendo has Mario 64's source code and could easily do what the gaming community has done with the source code on the Switch. To me, this collection seems very half-assed.

I'm not sure if this is simple emulation. They have upscaled the the HUD and added icons for the new buttons the Switch has (+. - and home)...

Was hoping Galaxy 2 would be on there, but I'm interested in Galaxy 1 at least.

But why is it limited until March 2021?

"...and a digital edition of the game will be available for a limited time, until the end of March 2021."

??

If I'm remembering correctly, they similarly limited the production of All-Stars on the Wii (although they would have a re-release a few years later). Let's not forget that they're also limiting the release of that Battle Royale game to March 31 too.

It seems like it's just something they do.

Question. Does anyone know if you can play Mario Galaxy with a standard controller in 3D Mario All-Stars? Or is that something they didn't say?

Edit: Looks like waggle controls are required. That is a huge bummer.

Here is what Nintendo had to say:

Defy gravity as you explore space in the Super Mario Galaxy™ game, originally released in 2007! Help Rosalina restore her ship by collecting Power Stars and save Princess Peach. Gently shake a Joy-Con™ controller to activate Mario’s Spin ability or pass a Joy-Con controller to a friend for some extra help in Co-Star Mode*.

*If playing on Nintendo Switch Lite, detached Joy-Con controllers are required and sold separately.

Lol. Lite owners pay a installition fee.

The leaks kinda ruined it for some I think. Some thought it would be Nintendos big holiday game with remakes of 3D Mario games. But to Nintendo it was just something they put together to celebrate Marios 35th anniversary like they did with the Wii one.

It was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be. Was hoping Galaxy 2 would be included as well, but oh well.

This is an odd, strange direct .... and I don't know how to feel about it exactly.

On the one hand, it's certainly the best Direct we've gotten in a long while, and I think what impresses me is how Nintendo basically catered to every corner of the Switch with it. It's not like you just get the 3D Mario collection, or the 3D World port, you also get an AR Mario Kart game, a 2D Mario All-Stars port, and a battle royal NSO game. Nintendo didn't really have to do any of this, but I think it was smart to do it and I'm glad they recognized there's a demand in an all of these weird niches. Basically every way the Switch could be used (a Wii U port machine, emulation, original online-only NSO content, AR gimmick games) was addressed, and at least thematically that's pretty cool.

On the other hand, it's kind of disappointing in ways where Nintendo just failed to address important things. Why isn't Galaxy 2 in the 3D Collection? There's really no excuse for that. Why isn't Mario 64 in a widescreen aspect ratio? I get creating a toggle for people who want a 4:3 mode, and for all we know maybe that's what they've done, but forcing this would be stupid. Why wasn't effort put behind Mario 64 in general? I'm fine with older graphics, but if you're going to treat this like a significant release in the year, why not remake 64? Or at least fix some of the gameplay problems that people have with Sunshine? It just seems like this is so rushed. Like I said I didn't expect 3D World, but if you're going to put so little effort in the other games in the collection, why not at least include that to make up for it? Yea yea it's Nintendo ...

And I know that a lot of times the internet makes up buzz-words and oversells concepts that don't really exist within the industry. But man ... the fact that this isn't even a Holiday title, and that it releases in two weeks, just makes it feel even more rushed. Sure, the game is a limited release that's launching just a few months before holiday, and I think that's the reason they made it a limited run, to get people to go out and buy a Switch so they can hurry and play a collection. And if a popular game releases a few months before holiday, on a system that's already in demand, it's basically a title that will push holiday sales already. But it just feels like such a strange admission of normalcy .... even with an entire direct behind it. I have a feeling that Nintendo at this point is just looking to see how far they can push sales for their games while spending relatively little time marketing them, because then they also spend less money than they would over a longer period of time.

Also I know I'm going to come off like a crotchety guy, but the fact that they didn't celebrate with a Mario Maker event or update at all is very sad to me, feels like the final fuck you to me personally as a human being. Yea they didn't really do that with Paper Mario, but I think that's more understandable because that's not a live service game (yea I hate myself for calling Mario Maker that too don't worry).

And the fact that it's a limited run release ... jesus christ ...

I'll still probably buy it because well, I just haven't played these legendary games, or at least I barely played Galaxy as a kid and I haven't played the others. And I'll definitely buy 3D World eventually, I want to have a good Switch-graphical-fidelity 3D Mario on the system and Odyssey simply doesn't cut it. But I still feel for people frustrated by the type of release it is, and how it doesn't even do a good job of homaging the 3D games when Galaxy 2 isn't there.

Honestly if I had any self-respect, which I don't because I lost it a long time ago, and I was a Mario fan (*cough cough* talking to you-know-who-you-are *cough cough*) I would be honest and treat this more like the Pikmin 3 Deluxe it is and less like the Kirby's Dream Collection it isn't. Actually wait no, Pikmin 3 Deluxe has actual new content and improvements. Nevermind. Lesson: don't be a drone.

Will Sunshine and 64 run 60FPS? does anyone know?

I kinda enjoy the bitterness in here.

Anyway that 3D collection is must buy for me.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

This is exactly what I thought it'd be but without Galaxy 2 :( :( :( :(

Not sure why people are complaining about it being full price, obviously this was going to be a $60 collection no matter what was in it.

Also for anyone who was expecting remakes or significant remasters...come on, this is Nintendo, there was no reason to expect such a thing. If they were going to put significant work into any of these they would have sold at $60 each. At best I thought there might be a little work upgrading textures on M64 but even that I thought was unlikely, GC and Wii games look good enough that just making them HD is good enough. I was a little bit hoping for a Mario 64 remake sold separately and then the other 3 games to be sold in a HD collection, because I always felt unsure if Nintendo would give us 4 games in one package as they would deem that too good a deal for their customers. Sadly I was right, Nintendo refused to do the obvious thing and give us a full collection.

The omission of Galaxy 2 makes zero sense and definitely is gonna hurt sales of this since Galaxy 2 is the best of the bunch and I think most people would be much more interested in the Galaxy games than 64 and Sunshine. With Galaxy 2 this would have been exactly what I expected and so would have been a 100% buy for me. But now I'm a bit on the fence since the two Galaxy games were the two I most wanted to play through again. Though the ability to play the other 3 games again is probably enough for me to buy this so I think better chance than not that I will end up picking this up.

Also the limited time release wtf?! This game, even without Galaxy 2, could sell many millions. Why the hell are they going through the trouble of making it only to have it available in any format for 6 months?? That is just bizarre. Yet another dumb decision by Nintendo. It literally costs them nothing to keep the digital game up forever, so they are deliberately choosing to miss out on probably hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue at no cost or effort. Nintendo continues it's history of WTF decisions by not including Galaxy 2 and doing a 6 month release.

I guess we now know what that rumored "game with wheels coming this year" game was. Some people thought it'd be a new Mario Kart, and well they were right haah but not what anyone expected. The Mario Kart is a very cool concept, I have no interest in it but I'm sure there will be plenty of kids who are dying for it. The Mario 35 rip off of Tetris 99 is very cool. It said Mario 35 is only available till March as well...does that mean they are just gonna shut it down after March or you have to download it by March to be able to own it? Hopefully the latter. I'll definitely be downloading Mario 35, should be a fun free game, already love Tetris 99. Even if they just take it off the store after March, thats really dumb because another free game available with Switch Online would improve the value proposition of the service but instead they are stupidly doing a 6 month only release like the collection. And the omission of Galaxy 2 makes me worried that they are gonna do another 3D Mario game on Switch but instead of a new game they're just gonna remake Galaxy 2 (which would be cool but obviously everyone would rather have it in the collection and a new 3D Mario game in Switch's future). Could be wrong, but I don't see why they would leave out Galaxy 2 for no reason if they weren't planning on doing something else with it. Then again, Nintendo makes plenty of stupid decisions for no reason so maybe they just decided four games in one collection would be too good a deal to give their customers.

At least with the collection launching in less than two weeks we now know it isn't the big holiday title and they must have at least one big holiday title coming. At least makes me more excited for the Switch holiday lineup than assuming the collection was gonna be the only big thing this Fall. Could still be BotW2.

Supposedly the joycons part for the lite is specifically referring to two player mode, not normal play and that the german eshop/ Japanese video  said that joycons are optional. But we need to wait for an official statement
