Forums - Gaming - should games be desexified while every other social media focusses on sex and appeal?

In games it's mostly cheesy more than anything else so I don't care.

Besides; new Lara Croft is much better looking than beachball-b**bed Lara anyway.

Ew no. Her character is awful, her voice over is bad. In the latest games she's a killing machine with little to no remorse and lacks the charm, humor and charisma to pull it off like the Lara of the 90's/early 00's. She lost her style and iconic looks (attire) along the way.

Way different to old Lara she went from an explorer/adventurer with larger than life body proportions; to run of the mill designed character who's as well designed as her dull VA.

Lara was always a strong character who was iconic to male and female games alike. That hasn't changed much but since the reboot, Lara essentially turned into a gritty female version of Nathan Drake. Without the likability or old Lara or humor. Looks like that went with her boob size.. :P Joking aside, sex appeal doesn't always mean bad if its done tastefully. It can be empowering like the Lara Croft was an icon for many female gamers. Why does having having bigger or smaller assets matter? We're all built differently. Why change a character who's been a part of a lot of peoples gaming life.

Its like would you rather see fight as Steve Rogers before or after he got the super soldier serum when he turned into Captain America? Or something along the middle where he would have very average body proportions and more realistic design - maybe add a few more lb's of body fat and loose the six pack.

Agreed that new Lara sucks. But that's just a personality thing. In terms of visuals though, the new model is better. People come in different shapes and sizes, but no human would ever have the proportions OG Lara had. If they wanted the visuals to be even vaguely realistic, they had to change that, otherwise she's look like a cartoon character in the real world.

@Jaicee there is a difference between sexist and sexual.
The mod Schlongs of skyrim for example is great

To judge by this response, you clearly didn't read my reply before, so let's try this again. This was part of my comment before:

"It's more than fine with me if there are women game characters who are, well, sexual creatures. That's not the issue. The issue is that the OP seems to want to reduce all representation of women in video games to sex appeal. I'm not on board with that."

The issue to me is not about it being unacceptable for video game characters to be portrayed as attractive or have sex lives. It is, as stated before, that..."The fact that I am a (marginally) sexual creature and female at the same time doesn't mean that all games about women should be Lollipop Chainsaw clones for the sake of 'logical consistency with women's slutty lifestyles'.

Let's recap that:

1) You offer, in the OP, broad and sweeping generalizations about women of a sort I could never get away with making about men. I'd be ridden out of town on a rail.

2) You propose that, based on those offensive generalizations, women should be punished by consistently being portrayed in a 'matching' hyper-sexualized manner in video games for your personal benefit.

Ya see what I'm getting at now? So this time let's try replying to what I actually wrote instead of just being like 'you're just anti-sex.'

1. Come on, do you really think he's dumb enough to believe all women who use social medias sexually exploit themselves? He could of worded it better, but he's just saying it's become more common for women to do so.

2. This is purely your imagination. No where in his post exist the notion that all female characters in games should be hyper-sexualized, only the notion that developers should be free to make sexy characters if they want to.

Also, I'm jealous of you, that you've a lived a life where fictional characters being sexualized in video games can be considered a punishment. xD

Both sexualisation and desexualisation at all costs are bad, unless sex is a game's main feature, games should offer realistic and different degrees of sexualisation. Or in some cases unrealistic, but it's quite a difficult choice if they aim to repeat Lara Croft's success.

Heh, not saying you’re wrong, but I’m just saying, since this is a thread solely about looks, that bigger “assets”, to my tastes aren’t exactly an asset.

This is also why I think Dead or Alive (even the fighting game variety) to me is one of silliest and cheesiest things out there. I don’t actually care whether or not something like this would be ‘demeaning’ or whatever in the eyes of a woman, that’s for someone else to decide, I just think it’s silly. Same thing for old Lara Croft, taken at face-value, and to take this further into the movie sphere, of the actresses they had to pick to resemble each era’s Lara; Alicia Vikander > Angelina Jolie. So to stay within the question of this topic, the ‘desexification’, if you want to call it that, appeals more to me than the original look, because I ironically find things that are more ‘normal’ to be ‘sexier’ than silly extremes.

Gaming businesses is slowly getting centred to the States. Inside the States, gaming is slowly but surely moving to a Hollywood way of doing show business. As a result, gaming will get more political and 'woke'.

Hopefully there'll be always silly and fun games that don't lecture the audience on social issues and female parity stuff so we can keep just playing and having fun.

God bless You.
