Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer confident after seeing PS5 presentation - Gamelab 2020 interview

How do you think MS will perform at the July presentation?

MS will be in a league of its own 5 6.25%

MS will do better than the PS5 presentation 14 17.50%

MS will do as good as the PS5 presentation 13 16.25%

MS will do less well than... 48 60.00%

Total:80

I don't have enough elements to say if MS will do as good as Sony, or better, or whatever, but I feel XSX will show its muscles, with Halo Infinite, New IP and I hope a New Fable Game.
From a tech/graphics point of you, XSX should impress us, MS cannot fail on Next Event. Honestly I cannot wait, I'm very curious.

They are cross developing on multiple platforms. The base code has to run on Xbox One.

No question. I imagine Xbox One will have lesser graphical fidelity and textures, no ray tracing, lesser draw distances, lower resolution and FPS. More loading times and pop in. Probably will be gimped in terms of AI and number of characters on screen. Sure the base game is there but like Witcher 3 on Switch I’m sure they will do all the cutbacks necessary to make it fit.

Really looking forward to Digital Foundry when they make the inevitable comparison between the two

Maybe, but Witcher 3 couldn't be ported to ps3/360, though. https://www.digitalspy.com/videogames/a545935/witcher-3-wild-hunt-impossible-on-ps3-or-xbox-360-says-developer/

The performance gap between the Xone and Switch is a lot smaller than the gap between Series X and the Xone. Anyways, we'll see soon. Hopefully ray tracing will make the game stand out compared to current gen Halo games.

To me it’s clear who’s the most progressive and innovating the most. As opposed to one platform like the competition you can get their games via console/PC/Game Pass/Xcloud. Low barrier to entry and so many choices. Their investment in 1st party is unheard of, July event gonna change a lot of perceptions with too many games under wraps for too long.

In the end 3rd party games, even timed or whatever come and go. It’s the 1st party that defines the brand. Sony’s conference can be summed up as: GT7, Spiderman MM, Horizon ZD2, Ratchet&Clank. The big guns. Show me more then 4 big exclusives and they prove their first party is serious competition. Forza and Halo are a given, it’s the rest of their studios unknown games that make me excited.

Well I always though you were conservative.

And on the unheard of, Nintendo and Sony have invested much more for much longer. At most you can say it is unheard of on MS, but even that if you sum the total they paid in all these studios and expansions is probably less than they paid on Mohjang and perhaps not more than the money they put on their TV intentions and studios that they closed on the start of this gen.

And I've had first hand experience with most of those you mentioned and many problems lol. Not a good track record.
Not saying Linux or Apple is better, nightmare pairing an iPhone with iTunes on Windows or even using an iPhone 11.

What I am saying is, keep all that crap away from the console experience.

I never went with iPhone for very long, I'm an android guy and absolutely no problem with my S7's onward, it's just plug and play. Microsoft is also a lot more open about its approach to software and it's for the better. Examples are office being on iphone and android, the new surface using Android, Windows 10 being free.

Microsoft is really changing as a company. I used to hate them with a passion, but now I see that their direction and philosophy is changing, and I can also see it in Phil's discourse. I think that it's fantastic for gamers for this simple reason: it makes things more accessible.

I'm for free software, free as in liberated. I know that MS is heading in a digital direction and that is the opposite direction, but they are not going all digital, it is still a hybrid offering, and hopefully players like you will require it stay that way. And while I love the convenience of watching my movies on Netflix once in a while, I'm sad that I can't rent some good old repertoire movies like I used to, or that some movies I used to have on the service are now removed. I see it from both sides, not one or the other, but the truth is that everyone is going in a digital direction, and that includes Nintendo and Sony. It's up to the players to make sure our rights over what we own is respected. But offering options to the player still doesn't violate that need, so imho it should not be kept away but rather embraced. It's a good thing for players to have different options to buy the console, in a case where they can't spit the cash out up front, or if they want to pay over a subscription rather than committing to the limited purchase of certain titles. I could go on but what I'm seeing from MS right now is only good stuff, especially the push for new and more diverse gaming experiences than even Sony. This kind of options in offering is only a good thing for the industry.

As usual completely ignoring VR.... You can't seriously mean that after MS never coming through on supporting VR on XBox One X. Is MS even still supporting their mixed reality headsets? What happened to their AR headset, Minecraft on your coffee table, and lightroom or whatever it was called.

What more diverse gaming experiences did you have in mind?

My experience with MS still isn't very positive. From my laptop not willing to turn the screen off when a DS4 is charging, FH4 not just not supporting the DS4 but not even working when a DS4 is charging on my laptop. I caved in and bought a wired 360 controller for Ori, FH4 and Crack down ($1 for game pass, $30 for a controller that is actually supported lol) To windows 10 deciding it has to reboot at night and I find all my work gone in the morning and have to go through a mandatory Edge introduction (killed it with task manager).

Anyway the move to digital has nothing to do with supporting everything under the sun. I bought Tlou2 digitally (will get physical edition some other time) due to the pandemic. And even that has issues between base and pro ps4. (At least I've heard of glitches during cut scenes, haven't seen any myself on the pro)

But you're right their direction is changing, going head to head with Google, Amazon and embracing Facebook gaming. Then there's one game I would gladly subscribe to xCloud for, yet it's not coming to xCloud? Flight simulator seems to be the perfect candidate for streaming, not relying of fast (observable) movement, 2 peta bytes of ever changing real world data to work with, input latency doesn't matter, and you would be able to see everyone else flying around. That would be a new gaming experience, real time weather, real time traffic, up to date world scenery, jump to any place in the world without having to download gigabytes of detailed data each time.

What makes you think those trailers were showing the XSX build of Halo Infinite? Everything in those trailers looked possible on XB1 X. I’ll be shocked if we don’t get footage of the XSX build on the July show that looks significantly better than the two trailers we already saw.

If that was 2019 build I doubt the graphics will improve that much. Besides, that was a cut scene. And they are crunching hard for this to launch with the console.

Besides companies usually show the best version they have... didn't we even got accusations that TLOU2 and GoT footage were on PS5 because they would be impossible to do on PS4?

Yep. And a lot of devs show target renders for reveals. Even for the TLOU 2. Which did get some downgrades in character models (in-game), lighting and less effects like the amount of volumetric fog. But was shown in realtime gameplay and did look very close to the final product.

Considering the game is coming out in a few months its a little strange we haven't seen any gameplay for Infinite. I hope they do knock it out the park though for Halo fans.

Will be interesting for sure. 343 did a good job for Halo 4 on the 360. I'm sure the game will look good on XB1 and great on XSX.

I guess there better not be any Series X games that are technically superior to the top end PS5 games then. Would be a bad look if the console that's being held back by last gen ends up outflexing the console that's completely unshackled from any such burdens.

Now this was gold ;-D . Great reply!. I can honestly say that i cant wait for july show from Ms cos if the above happens i want to see the melt downs and excuses from the sony fans here as to why this is.

And if they aren't them you are going to mock Xbox fans because a system with more power doesn't have more impressive games?

Willing to wager they made more off xbox live + 360 than Sony did with the PS3. Not to mention their other markets.

They may be 3rd place overall, but they weren't 3rd every gen.

Given the cost of RROD, I doubt Xbox had much better profit than Sony last gen.

Yeah I'd be curious what their profits look like with Gamepads compared to the days where they had to rely on just sales of games. I keep thinking it can't possibly be as profitable but they seem to really love those subscribers (myself included).

I do love the ability to try a game out and quit without feeling like I wasted money because it's built into a monthly program, that's for sure.
