Forums - Nintendo - Best N64 game not made by Nintendo or Rare?

I think the best is...

Turok 3 8.82%

Turok 2 5 14.71%

Resident Evil 2 4 11.76%

Rogue Squadron 7 20.59%

Doom 64 2 5.88%

Ogre Battle 1 2.94%

Beetle Adventure Racing 1 2.94%

Rayman 2 3 8.82%

Wrestlemania 2000 0 0%

Other 8 23.53%

Total:34

All the wrestling games, NBA Hangtime, and Wayne Gretzky Hockey games for the multiplayer. For single player Resident Evil 2, Turok 1/2 Mischief Maker, Body Harvest, Doom 64, Star Wars Rogue Squadron. If I'm picking just the one, Resident Evil 2, awesome game, and was incredible that they fit the game on a cart.

Does Diddy Kong Racing count? It was developed by Rare.

As pointed out by NightyPoe, no, because Rare was a second party in the N64 era.

Ogre Battle 64. Easily makes my top 3 N64 games.

That’s the one. (If we’re not doing second party devs, otherwise GE007 by far).

Ogre Battle 64 was easily the third party game I spent the most time with by far on the N64. I am an RPG guy and this was the only exclusive RPG on a Nintendo home console I liked until the Wii.

There was also Wrestlemania 2000 - which is my favourite non-Japanese pro-wrestling game of the generation... and the second last generation where I actually liked pro-wrestling (and fighting) games. After the PS2 gen, I lost interest in the fighting genre almost kind of like how I lost interest in beat em ups after the early 16-but genre... yet still somehow love to play all the classics to this day.

Since we’re not including second party (which are technically third party, just Nintendo lingo for their Dream Team) Then that means no Factor 5, DMA/Rockstar, and Iguana Entertainment, or Rare games. Even though, technically, some of them broke away during the gen, particularly DMA spent most of the gen fulfilling a contract of creating games for the N64 and had already broken away from exclusivity putting GTA on PSX and PC.

Rare was 2nd party at the time.

Though, I’ll note your pick, Rogue Squadron, was also second party.

WWF No Mercy and Resident Evil 2

So after this talk of 2nd party, I take it Space Station Silicon Valley isn't eligible? It was made by DMA.

I'll also mention Beetle Adventure Racing - I had a lot of fun with that game.

Rogue Squadron for me.

N64 is a treasure trove, third party included.

I’ll say one of the Star Wars games. Rogue Squadron is objectively probably a better game, but I had tons more fun with another. So I’ll pick that one.

Shadows of the Empire.

Incorrect.  Factor 5 was never a 2nd party developer.  They worked closely with Nintendo developing games and middleware in that era to the point that 2nd party lists often included them as an honorary member, but were always independent

Then by your definition, since Rare was technically independent, they’re not a second party dev either, and so your previous post is invalidated.

You’re even more invalidated by the fact that Rogue Squadron was published by Nintendo and Diddy Kong Racing was not.
