People on the IGN comment section keeps bringing up how it looks like a router haha.

I think both Series X and this look silly, personally. What's the size comparison?

A lot of people also compared to router and one to a fan.

For size it seems a good 20% taller, but also it is a lot less tick.

Someone put that for volume XSX would be 8L and PS5 would be 9L. I find it hard since the GPU on Xbox is quite a bit larger, but then Sony may have gone with a cheaper but bigger cooling solution.

Height and aesthetics matter a great deal to me. That thing is too tall and it's futuristic look doesn't blend well with my wife and my rustic aesthetic of our house.

Funny it seems only one other person noticed the parallel with Xbox 360 re: concavity, although fair to say this takes that much further.

I like it, and honestly it feels entirely in line with what I would expect from the design language in the already revealed controllers.
The video trailer intro is great (if maybe 2x as long as it needed to be, but hey somebody gets to show off their animation/design skills!),
and to me is really about engaging with the biomechanic or perhaps evolved mechanical aethetic it is clearly going for, I actually think
the vagina jokes get at something because the "laminated" aspect is like living creature, a fungus, an info-lifeform, or... you know... ;-P

Not sure why people seem "worried" about lying it flat, or even thinking a stand is "necessary" to do that... yeah they have one,
but if you didn't use it pretty clear it would just sit at slight angle to it's normal "flat", with concavity making air gap for passive circulation.
Nothing about that would stop electronics from working, or impede cooling, so I'm not sure where people think that is a problem?

I don't really understand the perception/complaint it is too large... Is that measuring only in one dimension?
Seems like considering the total volume it isn't too much different than Series X if I am just eyeballing them...
I mean with the concavity and all, PS5 will "waste" some exterior perimeter volume, but not more than 10% I'd guess.
If that comparison picture is accurately scaled, it looks roughly the same size as OG PS3, larger in one dimension, smaller in other.
Really makes you wonder how you get from that to the "OMG! I can't buy anything that big!" responses here.
Not that I'm offended by anybody not vibing with it's aesthetic or whatever, to each their own...
That people are complaining it is large is pretty contradictory to others "worrying" about it's cooling capacity.
(those probably are totally diferent people, I'm not keeping track, but obviously that shows some response is baseless)

I don't really have problem with the disc version, asymmetry goes with biomechanic vibe that just accentuates the natural assymetry,
(Series X itself has assymetric disc drive mounting, centralized placement just really isn't convenient... this just leans into that)
Rather than just "fattening" the white part there, I probably would have preferred to have another black "layer" divided from other
black layer by white ribbon/sheet, and sandwiched on other end by 3rd white ribbon/sheet that only extends to half the length.
Pretty sure that would be a more expensive design though, even if it would taken the design language to it's logical conclusion.

Cost of disc drive probably isn't more than $25, but it's rather reasonable for it to have much more significant discount,
since Sony will now control and profit from every game sale, both 3rd party they never got anything more than minimal license fee for,
and 1st party which they also had to share significant part of sale price with retailers and everybody else in the food chain. Exactly why
retailers must absolutely hate these "all digital" consoles, since it cuts them out of ongoing game sales (selling cards really can't compare).

The controller is probably not the main deciding factor for a console.

Let's have a look at Steam with free choice of the controller (unfortunately only a snapshot of August 2018):

Free choice??? Where just about everything uses XBox prompts and you have to use external mods to use a Dual shock while MS actively breaks the use of the DS4. Ori doesn't work right with a DS4, FH4 goes bananas even with a DS4 only plugged in for charging. Free choice lol. (I had to buy a wired 360 controller to play FH4)

You don't need use external mods to use a DualShock (or a Nintendo Pro controller) on Steam... the Steam software supports all popular controllers.

And FH4 ain't a Steam game.

Ori is on Steam, didn't work with my DS4

Oh shit that's thick.. starting to wonder if it'll even fit under my tele now, lol.

I wonder if you can simply put a couple rubber or felt pad circles in the corners to keep it sort of straight without the stand. That stand looks cumbersome, couple bits of felt pad on the right side corners would fix the wobble issues and save some height.

Overheating should not be an issue with that size and those large vent holes all around. Can of black spray paint and some black rubber nobs for the corners with some super glue, fixed.

It looks like they cheaped out on the horizontal stand. It's doesn't fit the design. Something thin and curved down to the floor on the top/right portion would have been much better.

I'd guess the fan must be in the top/right portion near the intake vents, kinda like PS4, with the exhaust going out the back like usual?

The conclave form factor reminds me of what Microsoft was trying to do with the Xbox 360 as well.

Now that you mention this, it does remind me of the 360. The controller and console both have some 360 in there no doubt, though the controller is much more blatant.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Yeah DS4 is quite hit and miss on Steam and requires big picture to be running in the background.

One of the reasons why I stick to Xbox One controller on PC. Plug and play, and just works.

It's a monster! There is no way I would get something that big, would take up so much space on my entertainment center and stick out so bad. Well, I guess the Series X is the route I'll go if I don't just stick with PC/Switch. I was open minded before today, but I really can't justify getting any console that's large. Especially when it looks like that lol.

I measured, the SeriesX is too high/tall no matter what way you turn it to fit in my entertainment center. The ps5 should still fit on its side but whether the psvr breakout box will still fit on top of the disc drive model with stand, doubt it. Hopefully Sony put in a dedicated port for psvr2, or could that possible work from the USB-C port on the front.

You can use it laid down, and I don`t mind the aesthetic, but well you can skip purchasing it as well.

Just remember PS4 to Pro and the first didn`t had PSVR at the time, so the Pro had additional USB on the back. So with PS5 I bet it will be easier to hook the new camera and PSVR than even PS4Pro. And PSVR2 possibly won`t even have breakout box.
