Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Persona 5 the best jprg of the last 20 years ?

It is definitely up there for me. Definitely in my top 5.

But to say it is definitively the best is a tall order.

I don't think anyone will argue it isn't one of the best, but the best? It has a lot of competition.
Persona 4
Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver
Pokemon Black/White 1 + 2
Radiant Historia
Fire Emblem Awakening
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Xenoblade Chronicles
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door
Final Fantasy X
Crisis Core
Kingdom Hearts 2
And a whole lot more.

Haha, no, FF9 came out in July 2000, 2001 in the UK. That hands down is better than anything since. But I'd put it in the top 10 easy.

Hmm, pie.

Not played any jrpgs last gen, and only recently got into them and even then, what I've played is very limited, but I have to say, from what I've played this gen, it ranks as one of the best games. Wouldn't say its the best jrpg since I haven't played enough.

This gen I've managed to play P5, Ni No Kuni 2, Ys xviii lacrimosa of dana and currently I'm playing through Kingdom Hearts 3.

Ys Xiii and P5 were just amazing. Kind of sad to hear the news Ys didn't live up to Ys Xiii.

Final fantasy? Seriously? Story was fantastic, music was fantastic, characters and world were fantastic, but gameplay was too limited, all you do is follow a corridor path with no openness whatsoever. I wouldn't even put it top 20 best jpgs from last 20 years.

Gameplay is why I'm saying FFX.

I dunno about you, but to me an RPGs gameplay isn't about "the direction you walk", rather it's the battle system that's important and I think that game had the best battle system of any RPG ever made. The character advancement system too was top notch. Plus it had the best mini-game of all time with blitzball too, shame the AI was pathetically easy to beat in it though.

I am 100% sure you have never played any xenoblade game, battle system is way better with a lot more strategy, variation and complexity involved, many more choices on the upgrades too.

That's a rather bold statement to make while Final Fantasy IX is still a teenager.

It’s the best JRPG of all time. I’m in the endgame of Royal now and nothing comes close to it. The characters, music, world, and gameplay are unmatched in JRPG terms. Can’t wait for what’s next

Just finished getting the true ending, now I’m sure that persona 5 is the greatest game of all time. The true “villain” is an amazing character. I hardly ever sympathize with the villain of most games and other media, but I couldn’t help but feel bad and think that what I was doing is wrong. I recommend everyone to please play this game

I liked P5 but for me FFVIIR is a much better game.

FF9 turns 20 in a month, so I guess it's still pickable but I though 2000 games should also not count as they are all 20 years old this year.

FF9 is better than Persona 5 (and any of them), tho.

That is because FF9 is the best JRPG and among the top 10 best games ever.

Then you never played FF Brave Exvius, if you had you would say it is the best JRPG ever if for you strategy, variation and complexity is that important.
