Forums - Gaming - What are your fave RPG ever?

Well, putting JRPG aside for now,
I think borderlands 2 was pretty much my favorite.

Around the Network

RPGs are my favourite games by far but, I'll just list the top ones otherwise I'll just go on forever.

#1-#15, in (rough) order.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Dragon Quest V
Pokemon Emerald
Dragon Quest XI
Dragon Quest VIII
Pokemon Black 2/White 2
Earthbound
Pokemon Colosseum
Super Mario RPG
Fire Emblem Awakening
The World Ends With You
Tangledeep
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
Mother 3

RPGs have always been my favorite genre.  Here are some of my favorites broken down by subgenre (and some are hard to classify).

Turn Based
Final Fantasy 7 is my favorite turned based RPG, and possibly my favorite RPG (depending on how you define RPG).  I am also extremely fond of Final Fantasy 1, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12. I would put all of those games on my top 100 games of all time.  I also really love Ultima 4 and have very fond memories of Wizardry.  I also really love all of the old gold box D&D games, although I can't pick one out among the others.  It wasn't the story that stuck with me so much as the gameplay.  I also devoted about 1-2 years of my life mostly playing Neverwinter Nights (PC), because the fan community made a bunch of really fun adventures for it.  Undertale is also a really fantastic game.

MMOs
Final Fantasy 11 is a game I played for years, and is my favorite MMO.  However, I bought my own PC for the first time just to play Ultima Online.

Strategy RPGs
Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite turn based SRPG, and I am also very fond of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.  Shining Force is also a great game along the same lines.  My favorite Fire Emblem game is Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.  On the real-time side my favorite SRPG is Freedom Force and another amazingly excellent game is Valkyria Chronicles.

Roguelikes
My favorite pure roguelike is Shiren the Wanderer (DS), but I really liked Chocobo's Dungeon the Wii.  A less traditional roguelike that I liked even more was FTL. Depending on how you define roguelike, I might as well put Diablo in there as well.  (Odd that I've never played Diablo 2.)  There is another game that I think of as a roguelike, but most probably think of it as an action RPG:

Action RPG
Dark Souls is an amazing RPG (although I think it is either a roguelike or a real-time RPG, but I guess action RPG is close enough).  Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 were extremely fun action RPGs.  I also have had a ton of fun with Hyrule Warriors.  And for that matter I believe the best action RPGs are actually the first three Zelda games: The Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2, and Link to the Past.  My favorite game of all time is in fact The Legend of Zelda (NES).

There are a lot of other great RPGs out there, but well...I have to stop somewhere.

Chrono Trigger, and Mother 3 is a close second.

Also, here's an excellent Mother 3 essay, if you're a fan: http://socksmakepeoplesexy.net/index.php?a=mother3

Okay, so I appreciate the effort...buuuuttt LoD isn't on this list so it's incomplete.

Heh, well I couldn't include everything.   I have played LoD though and it's a good game.  For PS1 RPGs I'd rate is better than FF8, but not as good as FF9.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

ME Series (I actually liked Andromeda :P), Fallout 2, Fallout NV, The Witcher 3, Borderlands 2, Fable 2.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Some people don't count the withcer 3 as an RPG and I'm sometimes inclined to agree but thst being my favourite game I've ever played I should mention it cause it does resemble an RPG in many ways just without the role playing. If it's not counted I'd have to decide between Divinity OS and Divinity OS2 and I wouldn't be able to make the vhoice, I like them both to such a high level for differing reasons around the edges but Divinity OS's more focused and confined experience would be on of the majour weights to my decision, The openish ended map with no clear distinction in levels until you are lovked into a half hour fight, in DOS2 feels just a little off.

I've seen this opionion many times, personally I find TW3 to be a borderline case with just enough elements not to transition fully into pseudo RPGs like Horizon and AC:O, thought it certainly provided template for such.

These games definitely are RPGs, I think the problem is that when someone used to say RPG it was taken to mean JRPG.  Given that the RPG genre has evolved and has a lot of subgenres it may have been better to be a little more specific so we were comparing apples with apples.

I don't find much value in comparing The Witcher 3 with Final Fantasy VII with Fallout 3.

Unless you count text adventure games. The first video game RPG I believe is Ultima in 1981. A western developed game that is turn-based. These early games are more true to the term RPG. You are a blank avatar and choose a class that has varied stats. Inspired by DnD. The earliest Japanese role-playing games were action RPGs like Dragon Slayer from Falcom. Inventory and limits to how many items you can carry. Combat is as mentioned action. Top-down view with a mini-map of the dungeon. Japan's role-playing games then started using the bump system. Popular in many games like Ys and Hydlide. Our playable character started having some character to them. Like a name.  We started getting games from the west Ultima sequels similar to previous titles then other series like Wizardry and Bards Tale and more were first-person dungeon crawling games with turn-based combat. Then late 80s come and Dragon Quest happens. Changing the face of the genre. The first game that people most commonly associate what a JRPG is. Soon after Final Fantasy. After this most Japanese RPGs became turn-based. Not call tho. At some point, WRPGs became more associated with action games and me dunno when that happened. Tho recent years it seems more classic WRPGs are trending again with Divinity Original sin spun off from the Devine Divinity series. Pillars of Eternity and such.

RPGs are like rock n roll. They have a hundred plus sub-genres. Hard to just lump them in 2 categories. CRPGs. WRPGs. JRPGs. ARPGs. SRPGS. TRPGs and so on and so on. Guardian Heroes even qualifies as an RPG. Beat em up RPG? It has full stats that you choose like an RPG. Story choices like western RPGs. Anime like a JRPG. Dragon's Crown feels like Diablo from a side view perspective in some ways (tho also a successor to DnD Arcade games) RPGs have a lot of loose definitions because again like a rock they have so many subcategories.
