Wait what!? I thought it was coming out in the near term, it's not that big of a game either. Is there really nothing there in Japan lined up for the Switch for the next 5 months?

There's nothing significant dated for Switch in any region. They've basically abandoned the platform.

This is ok.

Nintendo had a super busy Q3/Q4 last year and now they're slowing down now. The reality is they will continue selling off old software because they've created the perfect Nintendo box/family entertainment system with a good backlogue of titles for people to visit. There's only so much anyone should expect them alone to deliver.

People who want a wide variety of major releases have the option of the PS4. I've stopped expecting Nintendo to compete in that compartment.

Wow, those were 29 minutes of nothing.

Did the Japanese Direct announce anything else? They usually feature some games not present in the rest of the regions.

Proud poster of the 10000th reply at the Official Smash Bros Update Thread.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Switch sales next week are gonna crash down to almost nothing, this must have wiped out almost every bit of stock they could muster given the current manufacturing shortages.

Define crashing day down 2 almost nothing

hw might be roughly between 75k-100k and that’s pretty good

I'd just be surprised if there's that much stock left lying around given the massive week they just had and their well documented supply constraints at the moment.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

We’ll see, I doubt it’s just gonna crash under 40k or something.

Didn't Nintendo say, We know there are shortages of switches more are on the way?

My early prediction got somethings right and somethings wrong:

I'm thinking Nintendo will see a massive spike in terms of both hardware and software due to much stronger lineup early on in 2020 compared to 2018/2019.  correct

I would not be suprised if there is at least 10 Switch titles with over 100K Sales this quarter. correct

Massive sales and new demographics buying Switches due to Animal Crossing will drive higher software sales in other evergreen titles. undecided due to hw shortages

Pokemon and Ring Fit Adventure will benefit the most from this. partly true, both benefited but less than I expected due to hw & sw shortages especially for RFA

If Tokyo Mirage is able to clear >100K this quarter it will be a sign. dead wrong sry Tokyo Mirage

Hope 3rd Parties have some female focused gaming experiences they can push in 2020. partly true, Hatsune Miku will probably clear 100K without problems

Still one week left but right now Top 10 Software is up 55% YoY, and next week we will see that number increase considerably.

We are likely going to see over 4.5M Software Sold just among the Top 10 Switch Titles:

Just look at that... Animal Crossing domination. Be the number 1 game in Japan for sure.  Wonder how long it will take to pass Smash.

I guess Sakurai abandoned the fighter pass vol. 2 since nothing he has not announced the upcoming fighters at this point. /s

I don't even know if Nintendo employees from Japan are even permitted to come back yet to their respective offices in Kyoto and Tokyo.
Plus, for the General Directs, usually we see Koizumi or Takahashi presenting with a green screen behind them. I don't think they can do that at home.

And as Sakurai noted, he cannot even show presentations to developers who are part of Fighter Pass Vol. 2. Do you think there's anything different for Nintendo employees to be able to work at their offices or even meet reps from third party developers and their offices?

Well, that  aged quickly

Yay, DQXI S got past 500k. Truly deserved and great for a late (if strongly enhanced) port.

First off, I want to say that I intend to go back to regular schedule starting next week, so my post with the 2019 vs. 2020 comparison should occur on Wednesday instead of the recent Friday/Saturday posts. Probably worth noting that corona has had nothing to do with that, rather it's that hardly anything worth of note has been happening in the video game business lately and the negativity in lieu of a Nintendo Direct had reached peak time. That was already very tiresome last year and only got worse this year, so visiting VGC to read hysterical posts just wasn't worth my time. My Switch news feed had a Nintendo Direct pop up - a real surprise because I didn't know in advance - so the worst is behind us. I haven't checked the Direct thread yet, but the general mood should have improved despite the short term outlook of the Direct that first and foremost bridges the gap until the big Direct in the middle of the year where Nintendo shows the rest of their hand for 2020.

Now, moving on to the comparison, the stockpiling of Switch units has held true and the hardware sales to accompany the release of Animal Crossing were tremendous. As a result, 2020 YTD has built a comfortable cushion to weather the effect of the Switch Lite launch in September, so the main question has become whether Nintendo will have a holiday title of the caliber of Pokémon to make 2020 as a whole bigger than the already very good 2019. The upcoming 13 weeks make for easy comparisons - it wasn't until week 26 of 2019 that Super Mario Maker 2 released and put an end to a prolonged slump - so the current ~500k YTD advantage should not only be maintained easily, but continuously grow as Animal Crossing pursues its path to 5m+ and sells hardware along the way.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.
