I think its actually fine to charge if Sony and MS are covering the expenses for games to offer online services and making the effort to keep cheaters out. MS inparticular keeps servers active for a long time which is great.

If anything they arguably charge too much and use "free games" to compensate.

PC have free online until today. Sony and MS doesn't really offer servers for the MP. It is just a nick and dime against customers. Similar to how MS were locking Netflix behind Gold.

Yeah, PC is riddled with more cheaters more often. Developers generally run their own servers there so results mixed.

Free is good, but I think charging something makes sense too.

Charging to use apps was difficult to justify so its gone.

Xbox has gone through many changes during this current generation. Things started out rough, but as of the last couple years I believe Xbox has done a fantastic job at turning things around. They've put themselves in a great position for the next generation with the many studio acquisitions/dedication to 1st party content, gamepass, xcloud, cross-play, and transparency regarding next generation.

One of the last big changes MS needs to make is; not having Free to Play games behind Xbox Live gold. With the recent Call of Duty Warzone, it's hard not to notice Xbox is the only console which has this policy in place. Do I think this will sink the next Xbox if they don't change? No, but making this change will likely bring in more customers than if they leave things how they are.

F2P games have become much more popular on consoles than they were at the beginning of this generation. Gamers who mostly play F2P games like Fortnite, may not pick Xbox over another option, if all the other options don't have a paywall. Why would they if they don't already have a preference for Xbox? If MS decides to get rid of Xbox Live Gold for F2P games, those gamers will at least see Xbox on the same playing field as other consoles when deciding what system to buy. Then services like Xbox gamepass look much more intriguing, and could push them in that direction.

Anyways, that is my thoughts on the situation. Do you think this would be a good move for MS to make or  are things fine how things are?

1 - Xbox hasn't turn anything around, they still have poor sales

2 - They actually got things worse than they were, I was happy with the exclusives, Dead rising 3, Ori, Rise of the tomb raider, Rare replay, Forza horizon 2, Halo masterchief, Ryse, Forza 5, fighter within, sunset overdrive it was a good start of a generation, then they went bonkers, started to release online only games, then they cancelled and delayed games, then long periods without quality exclusives.

3 - I don't agree on focusing on multiplayer content, check what happened this generation, or the last generation, or the one before that, the console that sells most tends to be the one with the most and better single player exclusives.

Sure the X was fantastic, sure the backwards compatible games was great, but too little too late, they have to focus on the games, focus on software not hardware.

If it is true that sony will launch ps5 with Horizon zero dawn 2, spiderman 2 and gt7, then I'm afraid there's not much Microsoft could do against that.

But I doubt sony will have 3 major exclusives on launch day, it has never happened before and spiderman definitely needs a couple more years in development.

4 - If Microsoft wants they could be the leader of the next generation, its actually very easy and they can afford it, make xbox life gold FREE, no need to add free games, just make the subscription FREE, and sit back and see your console killing it in sales. But they wont do that, Xbox live is very profitable. Around 350 dollars per gamer for the 7 year generation. That's around a 2 billion dollars profit just for xbox live.

I agree as well.

If apps are also locked behind the paywall, (I don't think they are) I'd have that removed too.

MS have been making some very pro consumer choices of late and I would like to see that continue,

Well you don't need Gold or + to get riddled of cheaters so not sure why you pointed that.

From what we know the server side of both PC and consoles is very light except on MMO, most of the multiplayer games they go and use one of the costumers console as the server for the session so the server just manage the matchmaking. So the charge for that cost is just to high.

It is their service so if they want to charge we can't really complain much, people are willing to pay so that is a choice from both parties.

Until today? What did I miss?

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Probably won't make a huge difference but yeah, I agree. Just like how they locked Netflix and other features for years on the 360, it wasn't a very consumer friendly choice. Change it.

Didn't they allow Netflix for free (not behind Live paywall) once it came out on PS3 and Wii?

Lol.  That cracked me up.  Also person saying cheaters more rampant on PC because free.  Cheaters exist everywhere online.  That's why I say fuck multiplayer.  Only multiplayer I'll play is maybe a civ game with old college friend and Animal Crossing.

Since I don't care about Free2Play games, not putting cloud save games behind a paywall is much more important to me.

I imagine majority of gamers on vgchartz could care less about f2p games. This change is targeted towards the more casual gamer. You don't need Gold to have access to cloud saves.

Yeah, but you need PS+ and Nintendo online for that on other systems.
