Any product sales potential increases with a bigger price disparity over its competition. And it doesnt need to be $200 cheaper for people to start looking at it.

Don nailed nothing because I KNOW (not think) the switch is the only 9th gen system.

AFAIK, Switch isn't really considered in any gen as we know. And even if someone puts it in a certain gen, it is always gen 8 (because it is the present gen and Switch competes with gen 8 consoles). But to be honest, IMO Switch is a console that probably kills off gen talk for good.

I don't think Nintendo is really the arbiter of console gens. Especially when they've essentially given up on that. I say this as a Nintendo fan.

Since 2006 they started making consoles that felt a gen behind. This holiday their specs will feel almost two gens behind because Switch is handheld so it wasn't a massive boost over Wii U.

I don't feel Switch kills gen talk, Nintendo is just doing its own thing with moderately priced and portable specs at the moment.

Switch kills gen talk because it falls out of place. We can expect another revision midway through gen 9 which will lead to even more questions - is Switch 2 a gen 9 console or gen 10. And so on. The concept of gens worked because the console market overall was iterational. Every console manufacturer released new hardware in around the same time frame. This isn't the case anymore, so concept of gens seems pointless.

You just mentioned a bunch of things that have precisely nothing to do with generations. Time is the only factor and because of that switch is gen 9.

I've seen your posts, you are not a nintendo fan. The hell you're talking about arbiters of gens or giving up or power? Time is the only thing that determines generations. No ifs, butts, opinions, console wars or anything.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Being $100 cheaper would already be enough for the hypothetical series s to be viable. And only switch is 9th gen. Ps5 and xsx will kickstart the 10th gen.

Don nailed it. No, Switch is not the only 9th gen platform. Series S/X and PS5 will be part of that.

Being viable and being the best selling hardware is not the same. Viable just means a platform doing well enough.

I think we agree Series S's sales potential grows with a bigger price disparity to PS5. It needs to be like $200 cheaper to really get people looking at Series S and MS would have to demonstrate its still very capable hardware.

From a hardware feature set perspective... I would personally lump the Switch in with 8th gen and label the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 as 9th gen.
By that same token I would also call the Wii U, 7th gen and the Wii, 6th gen due to how their hardware aligns with industry technological trends.

From a release date perspective the Switch is 9th along with the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5.

Dreamcast (Japan) and OG Xbox were about three years apart. Both still 6th gen.

I feel Switch falls out of place because its a portable device. It uses specs built specifically for that first.

The belief is Switch 2 would use upgraded specs Nvidia has already developed. Switch is using Nvidia's Tegra X1. There were rumors a new Switch would probably use Tegra X2, but it seems like a newer SoC called Xavier which would be a massive upgrade. In practice though, that might just be specs closer to Xbox One. Which would be impressive for a portable device.

A new Switch might be seen as a 10th gen platform. However, we all know its capabilities are limited given its portable focus.

The Minecraft XSX Ray/Path tracing demo runs at 1080p and goes between 30-60fps.

For people who thought that you wouldn't ever get 1080p on next-gen consoles or that 1800p would be the floor, this is a pretty clear indicator of the contrary

Now of course a potential Series S could just run the game with Ray Tracing off but that takes freedom away from developers to build experimental games around ray tracing as a core feature. Just once again, I think a Series S would be a mistake which harms ambitions next gen and will lead to unsatisfied purchases later in the gen when the hardware is pushed more.

Your "consideration" doesnt change the fact swith is both porta le and home console.

Not only is that false, its also irrelevant. The ps4 and x1 didnt start the 8th gen, so the time between those and switch doesnt matter. First system.to come out a significant amount of time after the previous gen started will begin a new gen.

Switch came 4 years after wii u and ps5/xsx are coming 4 years after switch. So gen 9 for switch and 10 for the next consoles. This is just how it is and has no bearing in what system or games are better.

I don't think it works like that man. Lets say Alienware launches a mini handheld pc tomorrow that plays run of the mill pc games, would that mean Nvidia officially started the next gen? Of course not, it will only start when we get new, more powerful consoles and we'll see games that are build specifically for that hardware, often using "next gen" engines.
