PD is a niche game targeted to core gamers. I don’t think it was expected to do insane numbers but look at ResetEra and it’s pretty obvious it served its job. Idk how anyone could wish they were doing a different game when we haven’t seen any gameplay. Look at the talent pool, they have the potential to turn PD into a crazy success.

Lets have a Halo fanbase debate special.

#DiaperOrNoDiaper?

FUCK 343 FOR REMOVING THE DIAPER FOR 2 GAMES!

I can’t with calling it a diaper, but the traditional COd piece looks a million times better imo.

Around the Network

Diaper all the way.

Never played perfect dard before, but I'm excited to try this one. Based on the interview, it sounds like the design will be similar to deus ex in some ways (at least in terms of options for infiltration etc), and the setting looks great. Definitely looking forward to it.

Well, we already got Flight Sim, Crackdown, and Battletoads revivals this gen. I doubt MS will cancel the Fable, Age of Empires, or Perfect Dark reboots.

I'm actually kind of surprised by how few views the Perfect Dark trailer is getting. Adding up the Xbox Youtube posting of the trailer, and the most viewed repostings on Youtube, I'm getting about 860k views after nearly 48 hours. I would have expected alot more views than that. Afterall, the original Perfect Dark sold 2.5m copies on N64, and it has probably been played by at least 500k more than that since then between the 360 remaster and Rare Replay. By comparison, the Hellblade 2 trailer last year got over 3m views across the 2 official postings and the top repostings in a similar timeframe (48 hours). Sure the Hellblade 2 trailer was just all around much better reveal trailer (in-engine with killer graphics, good music), but still, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice only sold 1m at last official count (probably closer to 2m by now), Perfect Dark sold more copies.

I've been trying to tell you guys in here for years that Perfect Dark wouldn't arrive to the kind of fanfare that you envisioned. It's not now, nor has it ever been some storied franchise, that defined people's childhoods over years and years with consistently amazing experiences. It was just one game. An excellent game, sure, but it hasn't had any meaningful, positive exposure in people's minds for 2 decades since then. All it is now, is a name. One that likely doesn't mean a whole lot to a great many people. For all intents and purposes, this is a new IP. Just one that will make a select few people either really happy, or really angry, depending on how faithful it is to it's namesake.

I like to think of this game as essentially a new IP. A game that millions today were either too young, didn’t own a N64, or straight up weren’t born when Perfect Dark was made. This game doesn’t need huge fanfare to be successful. As someone who sank tons of hours into the original, me being nostalgic using a Falcon or a Camspy is just a cherry on top.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I'm such a newb.  Finally decided to test out the screenshot feature with the new "share" button on the Series X controller.  First time doing this so it took me a bit to figure out how to get it to my phone.

I'll be doing this game with all it's DLC to full completion before I move on to Gears Tactics.

Here's my screenshot.

I'm not sure how I feel about the diaper convo.

...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.

That's pretty much exactly what I said. For all intents and purposes, it's a new IP. It will succeed, or fail, completely independently of being called Perfect Dark, and whatever heritage that name holds.

My only point is, that I have always argued it was unnecessary to drag said name back into the light, especially if it's with the sole intention, or thought process that this somehow gives the devs a leg up over where they'd be if they were making something completely lacking a previous reputation. I think we can all agree that The Initiative have hired a lot of very talented people to develop their first game. We'd all be very interested in seeing their first game come together, regardless of whatever name they decided to stick on the box.

If those guys are all super passionate Perfect Dark fans, and they desperately wanted to reimagine this IP....fantastic. Happy for em. Can't wait to play it. I simply have always rejected the sentiment I often saw here, that it would be some sort of criminal waste if The Initiative, or some other MS studio wasn't working on bringing this IP back from the grave.

I don't care what people say or think, It was 100% the right move to revive Perfect Dark rather than let it fade away.

People also need to remember that the guy who rebooted Tomb Raider is in charge of this project and studio, there is a reason why MS brought him in to form The Initiative.

Never liked any of the previous Perfect Dark titles, they were just too old when I tried them. Yet, I'm a fan of stealth shooters, so I'm a bit excited, especially considering the talent The Initiative has acquired.

Also you're completely right that the public opinion/hype is pretty low. I looked through the news piece on TA and there are a lot of people disappointed with the announcement.

Yeah, maybe the next PD will be great and sell 10m+ because of that (let's forget it will be on GP) but some people on gaming forums love to overestimate how much the average Joe will care about it just because of some success like 20 years or even more ago.

And these people often push devs to develop such a game instead of creating a new IP where the dev has much more freedom in creating something truly exciting.

And if you want to see how some IPs are simply not as big just because some fans let it look huge just check Shenmue on PS4/PC. Nice that some ultra fans threw money on it but yeah...

Difference between Perfect Dark and Shenmue though is the original Shenmue titles both flopped hard. For the record I know Perfect Dark isn't a huge seller but it ain't no Shenmue, I think a lot of Shenmue fans even agree that Shenmue 3 wouldn't be a big seller but it has a very vocal fanbase, it appealed to its market and did its job, helped get Sony a E3 win too.

Middle part is an odd statement though, The Initiative didn't go "Joe from ResetEra wants us to make Perfect Dark instead of a new IP, lets do it!" They're making Perfect Dark because they want to and if its appeal is overestimated then that would be even more reason to say they aren't doing it because some forum users want it.

And further more, Perfect Dark is going to be new to a large chunk, potentially the majority, of the people who play it through Game Pass, to them it will basically be a new IP, like myself who has never played a Perfect Dark before.

Also a reboot can inject a ton of life and newness into a franchise, look no further than God of War! (Soft-Reboot but you get my point), it injected a ton of life into the franchise, boosted sales significantly and quality.

I'm just trying to say that an IP which succeeded 20+ years ago isn't any bigger as if you just create a new one instead. I know it can be a 95 Meta game and be a console seller but a new IP would do the same. The Perfect Dark IP itself won't really do much at all but that's what some nerds on gaming forums always tell these devs. That this or that IP will be the reason to buy the console. That this IP is what the console manufacturer needs.

I also doubt that Shenmue won Sony anything. It's pretty much the same, just because those few who are very vocal on the Internet acted as if the Shenmue announcement was such a big thing for Playstation doesn't change that almost nobody in the real world cared about the game. How can a game "nobody" cared about win something for Sony? Maybe they sold 20k consoles more because of that, lol.

And I even was part of those who played Shenmue on Dreamcast and really liked it but even I didn't care much.

Perfect Dark just isn't a very exciting IP to begin with. And then you see people arguing what kind of hairstyle should the main character have geeeeeez.. Not at all surprised if there isn't much hype around this reveal. Initiative should've done something else. But I do hope it'll be a good game.

It was the 2nd most popular IP remaining in their catalog of dormant IP's, after Banjo, and Banjo definitely isn't suited for The Initiative. I'd say that was reason enough to revive Perfect Dark. The chances of success with a new IP probably would be even worse, just look at all of the new IP MS released this gen that underperformed in sales (Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, ReCore, Ryse, etc). New IP's are always riskier than reviving an existing IP that has gone dormant I'd say, most new IP's fail. There is a reason why movie studios and games studios rely on sequels to successful IP's instead of taking risks on new IP's.

I'm wondering if MS should stop buying studios and buy IPs instead. I would like to see a new Extreme G, Jet Set Radio, Splinter Cell, Time and Eternity, Bloody Roar and so on and if SOMEONE owned all of them, they would actually be more than just a vain hope.

The Initiative logo looks a bit like the Datadyne logo. Do you think this is a sign they'll be a dedicated PD studio like 343 is to Halo?
