Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Alien Isolation, the first game to look better on Switch than on PS4/XB1?

When digital foundry makes a judgement of games between systems, as long as it jives with what some think, it's ok, if not, they're wrong? They said, the image quality on the switch version looks straight up better than the ps4 version, with caveats. Less or nonexistent ambient occlusion... it otherwise retains everything in the game, aside from the terrible aliasing.... which is what made them say, aside from the small sacrifices, the game has a better overall image quality. No big deal. It's the first time, and most likely, the last. The switch got a small"win"... yay. I'm loving the game. First time for me. It's great. The fact it's the best place to play it? Perfect.

There are already many ports on Switch that had comparable image quality to PS4 or only slightly worse.

Thats not suprising, because the better the graphics, the less quality you can achieve with more power. Diminishing returns. Thats why Microsoft and Sony both starts with relatively expensive consoles in 2020, otherwise the graphical advantages of the next gen would be almost invisible.

Beyond how well it compares to PS4, this is also one of the most emphatic examples to date of how decidedly Switch exceeds the capabilities of last gen platforms.

PS3/360 really struggled with this game, running at an awful framerate with constant screen tearing and pared back lighting, details, shadows, and post-processing.

Errrr a game that have comparable IQ to PS4 have nothing to do with diminishing returns.

Switch won't receive any game that have IQ close to SpiderMan, GoW, TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, HZD, etc.

The games where the graphic is similar were because that weren't the main focus. But yes this isn't the only game that IQ is close enough to be said that differences aren't of much relevance.

IQ, yeah. But world physics? HZD got nothing on Zelda BOTW despite much bigger budget

I dunno, I imagine Okami HD on Switch probably has similarly great image quality to those games, given it's 1080p with x4 MSAA.

Yeah, it's a remaster of an old game, but if we set aside graphical complexity, the base PS4 and Switch actually seem to have a similar IQ ceiling; 1080p with good AA.

Hey man you know what I'm saying.

Sure Okami could look pretty much equal (let's even say not a remaster but a remake), because the style of graphic without photorealism can hide the major differences in HW power and give a very pleasing show.

What I was saying is that applying diminishing returns to something that isn't fully utilizing the limit for graphical show isn't doing it right. If we compare the top tier graphical powerhouses on PS4 and Switch they will have a very big difference, diminishing returns haven't hit the ceiling yet.

But anyway, several games on Switch seem pretty enough that a large number don't care (even in some ports that had several cuts on IQ).

There's no getting around the fact that there is a significant power difference between Switch and PS4, that's true.

Diminishing returns is a matter of individual perception though; for me PS4/Xbone show diminishing returns even compared to PS3/360. It's not that they don't look much better than those systems, of course they do, just not to the extent of previous generational leaps in my subjective opinion. Since Switch is more graphically capable than PS3/360 I can see why someone might feel the gap between PS4 and Switch demonstrates diminishing returns.

Sure, I do agree that the leaps look smaller to the eye at every gen even if pixel count jump were higher
