Mario 64 was a revolutionary success that truly gave birth to the 3D console game market. The overall design was immensely original with an organic flow. From there, developers from all over began to deliver masterpieces, albeit most of those were inhouse.

I beg the differ when posters say 64 didn't age well. I don't think that could be further from the truth. In comparison, if any console (and again not just the 2 but of all time) failed to maintain its image its undoubtedly the Wii. How fast has everyone forgotten the sheer amount of testimonies claiming their Wiis being shelved as dust collectors merely months after their initial play times? I remember because I was one of them. Plus I had a softmod with 100s of games that just felt gimmicky.

So with all due respect to what the Wii did in terms of the casual player friendly console and embodiment of the underdog success story, the choice is just too easy.

I owned over 170 games on Wii, for both all ages and adults only, none of them are for casual only

Despite all of this, though, I do believe that the N64 is better and for one simple reason: it came out 10 years before the Wii.  The N64 established the genre's that the Wii basically just annualized and updated. While the Wii offers these same experiences with more polish and glitter and is more friendly to the modern gaming audience than the N64 is, you can't put it in the same category as the N64.  The N64 took enormous risk by establishing much of contemporary 3D gaming, the only truly original thing that the Wii came up with was motion controls which were basically a fad that didn't have a lasting impact.

You should tell that to PS VR with motion control

I already explained multiple times i referred to Nunchuk controls and not motion controls as a whole. I mantain what i said: "Nunchuk controls and its mainstream success were a fad". Wii sports kinda games sold a lot, and Nintendo has never come back to those games...It must be for a reason i think. Kinect with Microsoft was the same thing, it completely disappeared from Microsoft strategy. It went from being the next big thing for Xbox to completly forgotten. Would you agree with me that Kinect was a fad or not in this case?.

What i meant to say it that the sales of SNES lasted longer comparatevely to their peaks, SNES FY1990-FY1998 , 9 years (and then it sold a few years more but barely nothing important); Wii FY2006-FY2014, 9 years too, so yes technically they lasted the same (or very close) officialy, but...Wii fell off way harder in the second half of their lives compared to SNES.

N64 by the way started stronger than SNES in NA and Others:

SNES lifetime total NA+Others FY1990-FY1994 = 22'1M

N64 lifetime total NA+Others FY1996-1999 = 25'7M

Japan was the main difference (it seems that losing FF and DQ franchises  to PS during those years was a mortal blow in Japan):

SNES FY1990-FY1994 = 11'8M

N64 FY 1996-FY 1999 = 5'0M

Then Nintendo stopped production to sell GC's. In that regard, i will understand if someone says my argument proves N64 was even more of a fad...., but i guess it was Nintendo's decision to stop N64 because the console wasn't working in Japan and because the general perception was that N64 could not compete to PS and the next to come PS2 so they tried to do something new . 

So yes, i admit Wii didn't disappear as quick as N64 or GC (after more heavy research), but it didn't last strong as long as NES, SNES, DS, 3DS either.... It was something inbetween. It's just that i'm pretty sure most people here (and everywhere else), if you were telling them in 2009 or 2010 that Wii was barely going to sell 100M in the end, no one would've believed that. No such a succesful console has dropped sales so fast ever.

Fads burn out quickly and disappear. Motion controls are still around 12+ years after the release of the Wii and show no sing of disappearing any time in the foreseeable future. They're not a fad, they'd be long gone by now if they were.

Also montion controll done right can feel amasing.
Resident Evil 4, with the Wii mote was the proper way to play that game.

The fact that its still around, and has a bright future with VR..... MC isnt a fad.

Nostalgia is one hellva drug.... if not for so many of us, having found memorys of youth playing Mario 64, I doubt it would be this high.

Honestly looking back, alot of n64 games havnt aged well.... While alot of Wii games have (okay their not as old yet, but still).
I cant say I actually want to go play a n64 game atm, while I could easily find myself giveing Mario Galaxy 1/2 or Xenoblade Chronicles another.

To me this says the Wii wins this arguement, I dont live in the past.
present day, the Wii is a better system, and has better games (imo) since there's nothing on the n64 I want to play atm.

I LOVE ICELAND!

As much as I really enjoyed the Wii, during it's lifetime, the definite nod would have to go to the N64. Wii Sports was such a great system seller, but did it have the lasting impact of, say, Mario 64? Games like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time revolutionized 3D platforming/adventure, and they're basically the pioneers of much about modern gaming. Aside from the games, the N64 popularized analog controls, rumble, and made four player split screen a fixture. Also, thanks to games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, first person shooters were no longer confined to PC's (yes, I know that games like Doom, Hexen, Wolfenstein, and the like got console ports, but Goldeneye revolutionized fps's on consoles). Oh, and it also had Rare at their absolute peak!

The Wii had some amazing games--and it'd be easy to present the argument that Wii had a larger quantity of great games than the N64--but many of the games had gameplay that was made possible by the N64. Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were amazing, yes, but they still ran off of the Mario 64 style, adding a touch of waggle in the process. LoZ Twilight Princess always seemed like a lesser take on Ocarina. Something about the Wiimote makes the console feel somewhat dated to me. Then again, the Wii did introduce the Virtual Console, which was a huge thing!

Honestly, though, the N64, Wii, and Wii U are my three least favorite Nintendo consoles.



The Wii has some truely great games I loved like Red Steel 2 and the No More Heroes games and 2 great Zelda games. And not to mention Metroid Trilogy (although technically I played these on the Wiiu) but the N64 had more of an impact on me and I still return to its games.
