Forums - Gaming Discussion - The PS4 Won The Console Generation By Being Boring: Can The PS5 Do The Same?

Forbes actual post: PS4 won because it didn't try to screw gamers from the start and focused on games.
Well, I'm all in for that to happen again, indeed.
About PS4 lack of innovation... PSVR (VR gaming), PSNow (streaming gaming), Remoteplay (remote gaming on other devices) and Shareplay (play your friend games without owning it) you saw all those ideas on consoles first on PS4. Including Crossplay, Street Fighter V was PS4/PC from the get go.
Seems like someone at Forbes is kinda personally hurt.

PSNow is basically a Playstation rebranded Gaikal, and remoteplay and Shareplay also stem from that aquisition, it's nothing Sony developed or innovated. And the functionality of Shareplay was possible with Wii, DS and 3DS games before the PS4 launched. Also, Virtual boy?

And about Crossplay... you do know that PS/console crossplay is normally always allowed unless it's a Shooter or RTS game (as in those, Keyboard + Mouse have a very definitive, and thus unfair compared to console gamers, advantage in speed and precision), so SFV being crossplay with PC wasn't a big deal at all.

A big deal is, that crossplay with other consoles is still just possible with Fortnite and Rocket League, everywhere else Sony is blocking what could be patched in in 2 minutes. PC can play with everybody, but Sony apparently only with PC.

Also, last I checked, PSNow was pretty much crap, latency too high, image quality too low and excessively long loading times, especially on PS3 games.

This leaves PSVR, where they just jumped on the bandwagon created by the Kickstarter of the Oculus Rift. It's very low sales show, that VR is still very much niche.

PS4 won because of games because that's what 100% of people want when they look for a game console.

I've never listened to anything Forbes writes about for video games because clearly they get idiots to write for them.

Did the writer forget how MS wanted XB1 to always need to be connected online to use the system, and that you couldn't trade or borrow physical games? Was that also some of the few innovation this writer forgot to mention? Naw he just picked a few points to try and justify his stupid article.

With all honesty there are many gamers who won’t change their preferred console no matter what. With that being the case each creator has loyal fans who’ll never go over to a competitor. That is unless their chosen platform stumbles when it comes to what the consumer is there for in the first place: GAMES! PS4 delivered on games tenfold!

XBOX One is a great console but Sony outplayed Microsoft when it came to games that can only be played exclusively on each machine. And not only games that the players find to be great, the games are also heralded by media as well. I know players who bought PS4 for God Of War based off the reviews alone. Gamers who’d disliked the previous iterations of the game but couldn’t pass up the story. Really, only Nintendo ever benefits from being “different”. If Ninty has tried what MS tried to do with Kinect it would’ve been a *in Borat voice* great success! 👍🏾

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

PS4 won because Nintendo and Microsoft fucked up so hard they didn't need to risk anything. They promised to deliver games and games they delivered. It is a gaming consoles after all lol.

The best part of the start of the gen was when Microsoft announced DRM and Sony waited (as early rumors said they would implement DRM too) to see the gamer's reaction. When shit it the fan, Sony did the smartest thing they could drop DRM, make that how to shares games skit video (i.e. lend your disc to a friend). That won a few people over. This was the first gen I skipped an xbox and you know what I do not regret it. Only thing I would have loved to play was Killer Instinct.

Since when has good been boring?

I mean who on earth goes to the pub and says "ugh regular beer is so boring, I'd rather they put some weird shit in it instead"? Certainly not I! I'd much rather a good beer than some weird shitty drink.

Fruity cider > Beer... fight me. :P

Ok!

But, how about you have a few dozen of those fruity ciders first? I'm not against having an advantage

Virtual Boy, lol.

PSNow and Remoteplay are innovations, show me a console that did that first. Also cqn I play your 3DS games without owning them myself, like I can with Shareplay? (honest question)

SFV being not a big deal to you doesn't matter, the fact PS4 had Crossplay is undispited.

About some other games not being allowed, MS started that, FFXIV was to be crossplay between all platforms last gen but MS didn't want their still very competitive 360 and they still thought XBO would win the gen (like the media was pushing for Sony doom). And what they are allowing now is to try to push the XBL inside the PS4 like they are doing with the Switch, but Sony has their own network to push themselves.

Regardless of whom you thing is right there, the fact is the PS4 has Crossplay first. Windows is a MS platform and Sony allowed players there to play together with their PS4 ones.

The fact you also think PSNow is crap is also irrelevant, the fact is PS4 had it first.

About PSVR, Sony created a high-end virtual reality device that is quite pricy and has a very good amount of sales, go on and compare PSVR 4.2M sales to HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift (devices not tied to a single platform).

All you have done is say "I don't like it", " It doesn't matter to me", but the fact is PS4 had it before the other consoles.

PS4 didn't lack innovation at all.

Eh, I'd use the word predictable instead of boring. They'll probably "win" every generation from here on out because of Nintendo's spot in the generation thing. Because let's be honest, Nintendo is at this time more of a competitor to Sony than MS in terms of sales, being on point with PS4 sales aligned. I do think Xbox 2 is going to put up a fight but Sony won't be caught off guard like they were with Gen 7.

I mean if "more power" works, and you have the games to back it I mean, leave it be.

Somebody wants to play the "_____ console did it first" game. I'm REALLY good at that game...

The PS4 won because it was marketed well, they built up faith in their exclusive IPs at the end of the PS3's generation, and they did not try to force "innovation" on us that no one wanted. Frankly I hope they do the same thing with the PS5 with similar results.

To that end, I want Nintendo to continue to do just as well with what they are offering as that is my current platform of choice, and I want MS to do better this generation as well. If there is no healthy competition, none of these companies will give us their best. The only reason the PS4 was handled the way it was had a lot to do with the looming shadow of how well the 360 did last gen (starting out ahead and ending almost neck and neck).

They won by not trying to fix something that wasn't broke.

Yaman, just give me some awesome games to play. Keep it real and keep it simple.
