Forums - General Discussion - What do you say to judgmental people that say Superhero films are for kids ?

Often times you may come across those judgmental people whether it be on the internet or in real life they will judge you and say you are a grown man (or woman) why do you watch those superhero movies?  For instance a few days ago my coworker John complained to me that he is sick and tired of hearing other "grown men" talk so enthusiastically about the Avengers and other superhero movies, how can a self respecting man enjoy those movies? he wondered. I told him that although I agree that those movies are not interesting I have no right to tell others what to watch and what not to watch.

How do you deal with criticism like that?

I for one believe all movies are made for everyone and although I personally do not like superhero movies they do not interest me and not because I believe they are too kid friendly for me they are just not my style. To give you a better understanding of what movies I am about, I love No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Shawshank Redemption, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Apocalypse Now,The Godfather films (except for the 3rd one).   You may find those movies boring and uninteresting and that is exactly my point, everyone has different tastes in movies.   But how do we deal with criticism ?

I trust no one, not even myself.

Superhero movies are for kids. The kid side of me love those types of movies when done right. Nothing bad about enjoying the childish side of your persona. Just like any genre though, the concepts can be as basic or as complex as the writer and directors want.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I would say "While I don't agree with your opinion, I'm sure you have strong arguments to back up your opinions to the genre. So let us let aside our film differences aside and let's play some more Conception II together. Trully a man's game by all standards".

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I just shake my head at these boring people.

I love superhero movies but I'd just say I'd see what they're saying but they're loved by all ages. Is it a bad thing if they're made for kids?

PS4(PS5 Soon)and PC gaming

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

Bottomline is everyone has different taste, and different upbringings. Lots of us grew up reading comics so to see it come to life is amazing! And that's just one of the millions of reason why 'grown ups' may like it. Maybe John grew up in a box and that's why he thinks that?

So tell John to stfu and ask him why he gets to decide what 'grown men' are suppose to be like? Sounds like John is the real person that isn't a 'grown man' for thinking that way.

I say that they probably haven't seen a superhero movie in awhilde because chances are they haven't. If they have and still say that then i just shrug it off and move on to something else.

Obligatory C.S. Lewis quote:

"Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

Saying that something is for kids is a compliment. The real deal here is that SH movies are for simpletons and people with bad taste.

Am I edgy now?

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
