Because it's basicly a portable, and Japan mostly buy portable; it's a "life style", and a different culture.   It doesn't matter Switch has no new games, they would buy it anyway.

What surprise me is people who still get surprised about it :D

Last year Switch sold consistently 40K per week, was already a portable and with the exception of Smash and Pokemon Let's Go had basically the same library - and if you look these two games are among the ones with strong legs, but others are too, so a 50% increase attribute only to these two games seems much. Maybe the announcements really helped.

Yep; the 50% increase is a lot; games is not the reason, there is nothing new to play, but the old games can be enough reason to buy a Switch, this for sure; still the peak is odd unless Switch really became a cool trend even more year after year.   I can't find another reason.

Mario u deluxe will be a big sucess even after mario maker 2, some people like playing levels designed by nintendo rather than the fans. I wouldn't be surprised if mario u deluxe  broke 1.5 million lifetime in japan and 10 million lifetime worldwide, especially if the rumour about switch having a 7 year cycle is true. Say what ever you will about expensive ports but to non wii u owners mario u plus luigi u plus challenge mode plus the ability to basically play as peach in a 2d platformer  is a great 2d mario package, the best since mario world IMO. Although DK tropical freeze is the better game DK will easily be eclipsed by mario u by the next financial report ending march 31st.

Soo, NSMBUD pretty much does 10% better. Interesting would be how that looks worldwide. We need to wait for official numbers now, that VGC left us in the rain regarding that.

I think this is the reason

October-Super Mario Party (over 1 million)

November-Pokemon Let's Go (over 1.5 million)

December-Super Smash Bros Ultimate (almost 3 million

January-New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe (500k)

The combination of these 4 big titles in a 4 month period has created strong momentum.

Media Create no longer providing weekly data would blow big time.

No, its ~10% better after 9 weeks but look at the weekly sales. It has sold nearly 3x as much as the Wii U version over the last 4 weeks so the gap is going to get bigger and bigger.

We already know it's doing significantly better in the West like I said in my earlier response to you. It was 30% higher based on NPD and its charting high in EMEAA which is something that wasnt physically possible for it to do on Wii U because of how low the baseline was.

The legs of BotW are crazy.

It has now been in the top20 of MC for over 2 years. Has not dropped out once.

It has a crazy stable baseline (this chart is without launch week)
Lowest week was week 42 2018 with 4208 units.

BotW is currently the 3rd biggest Zelda in Japan and only 300k behind 1st and 2nd which are the two original Zelda games on the NES.
And this is without digital sales.

Let's see how far that top 20 streak goes. Currently 106 weeks and counting.

I've been predicting Zelda would have strong legs for a while now, but this kind of result surprises even me.  It's legs are amazingly strong.  This is just a typical week and yet it sold over twice it's lowest week.  For a long time it was rougly on par with Mario Odyssey.  Now Odyssey is hoving around the 20th spot every week.  Remember how well Splatoon 2 was selling for about a year and a half?  This week Zelda is above Splatoon 2.  For most weeks in 2019 so far, Zelda has been above Splatoon 2 on Media Create.  Zelda's legs just will not die.  In fact somehow its legs seem to be getting stronger.  Don't know how that is even possible.  It's amazing!

Yep.  these 4 games've created momentum, guaranteed, but can it be the only reason?  I think this Switch became the cool thing to buy in Japan, and NA as well, for a combination of reasons, and one could be its Social System, no need to elaborate about this; it is also very smart and cool if you have kids.  The Switch is also yet another Nintendo system that looks and feels like a toy, and I mean that in a positive way!

Parents feel safe letting younger kids to play with the Switch, and the biggest and best games appeal to just every demographic, built in easier modes so that kids and parents can play together and have fun, from the co-op mode of Super Mario Odyssey to the racing available in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.  This kind of trend and feelings is spreading more and more as time passes, this could play a fundamental part in the YOY peak.

Switch flexing with it's already incredible librairy :O

... gosh dangit, I heard the charts will become paid by the end of this month. We'll probably have to relay on ResetEra insiders for numbers and charts from now on ...

Ya that's probably a big part of it as well. I've been playing alot of Mario Kart, Mario Party & 2D Mario with my 4 & 6 year olds. It really is a great system for playing as a family. Right there with Wii as best party console.
