Forums - Gaming - Update: Jade Raymond joins Google as Vice President | Rumor: Google's gaming console details leaked, possible controller design revealed via patent

Why would anyone think it's not just another Ouya?

Because of Project Stream...and it's Google. They are well aware  (just like MS) that future is game streaming services...and they have actual tech and money (just like MS) to make it real.

These are just early first shots in game streaming wars.

I am still not convinced by a stream only device.
All I have tried out for gaming over a stream was using Steam Link on my 4k tv where my PC was the server.
My TV has only a 100mbit/s connection where the rest is 1gbit/s in my network.

I was streaming a 4k image and the quality of that image was really bad. A lot of compression artefacts and thus a loss in detail and image quality.
I don't know how they want to go that route with less bandwidth available on customers side.

Also, 4k 60hz 4:4:4 chroma 8 bit uncompressed uses around 16gbit/s (not checked the actual number). Now compress it down to like 20 / 50 / 100 mbit/s and you know what I am talking about.

The controller thing is about what you have gotten used to. Defending offset just for the sake of offset doesn't make any sense. Our hands are symmetrical, not asymmetrical. If you're fine with the position of one stick, then obviously you should be fine with the other stick being on the same level, unless you have two different hands.

And no one wants to play a game with a blurry image. I have a mostly stable internet connection, but occasionally it will hiccup for up to a couple seconds, and depending how the server-side software handles those situations, I can see the game continuing to play without you (more than likely) or freezing itself until the connection is freed up. The problem with the first of those two scenarios is that if the game tries to continue playing through even the smallest of hiccups, it could miss your input and that feels bad man. The problem with the second of the scenarios is micro-stuttering.

I really hope we don't get to the point where streaming games is the norm. I can see the cost-effectiveness being so great that companies would be willing to make those kinds of quality of life sacrifices.

The controller is already a fail. This is just going to be like any other android based console.

What a thing to wake up to. I think I'm gonna be sick.

- I should add that this just because of the bland me too design of the controller for Google's me too console. The answer to a question nobody asked. I don't get the idea that either offset or symmetrical analog stick controllers are better than one another. The DS4 is as comfortable and functional for me as the XB controller S. Other design elements like size or shape have more impact than a slight variance in stick placement. I mean, for me. I'm not too picky in general. The only controller I rag on is the Dreamcast's, due to Sega's inability to not only see the future, but the goddamn present. Dummies.

Lol... google console.

This is going to be a tegra powered android box. That has pre installd aps to connect to google streamin services and that ships with a controller. Kinda the same way we have a Fire TV cube. This will be a much more powerful chromecast box. The exclusives they aremaking (if they are) is just there way to get people to actually sign up to their service, kinda like netflix/prime originals.

That makes no sense.

Both analogs function together to allow movement of character and camera, using both at the same time at the same position is the most logical way to navegation.

Since we entered the 3D era that is the biggest aspect of gaming, 3D movimentation.

Offset analogs only exists because Sony was the first to do dual analog and made it right from the beginning and had it patented, which made other companies have to do something else.

Sorry but that is some janky logic. In the 3D era, our left stick is the primary control option for movement. You thumb should be on it most of the time. But because how it was placed on the PS controller, was due to keeping with the formfactor, not because they thought it was super clever. Many games on the PS1 still used the d-pad prominently cause you know, the PS! first came with a controller with no sticks. We however came to find out that offset works best because we developed upon already great left thumb stick up controllers. The camera movement in all this is secondary, as many games still have facebuttons as primary controls (meaning it should be level with your left stick). The only way you can make the argument that the left and both right stick are primary is if you are talking about fps games, which in all honesty is an inferior experience on console anyway, but the dualshock makes it all the more uncomfortable with the wide reach of your thumb and your index fingers on the triggers, hence crabclaw.

And this is what I was talking about when I said reaching for excuses to defend the offset sticks. If it really is that much of a stretch for you to reach them on a DS4, you must have exceptionally small hands. My hands aren't very large and when grip the DS4, my thumbs rest comfortably between the Dpad/face buttons and the thumbsticks. I barely have to move them to reach h what I need to hit. It's comfortable to play for hours with it.

Exactly.

Controller seems like a cheap knock off from DS3. They don't have 1st party yet and haven't bought many studios so very few SW expected for release... yes this will crash and burn very fast.
