Forums - Microsoft Discussion - The best Original Xbox Box Mini device would actually just be a Xbox One S (or X)

The Mini/Classic devices are mainly for collectors and lapsed gamers who want it for nostalgia.
For these people, a current generation console probably isnt really worth it and would rather just have a $70-100 mini system instead of a $200-300 modern console.

you can get a pre owned X360 now for about 50e with a controller which allows backwards compatibility with about 450 of the OG xbox library... also has 100% compatibility with the X360 games library.

This isn't about the best way to play OG Xbox games. Also, MS doesn't produced 360s anymore.

360 is not a great way to play OG Xbox games. Quite frankly, the 360's BC is a crappy option because the emulation isn't great. The 360 tends to run BC games worse than native specs, while the X1 instead gives better performance with increased resolutions. I suspect the X1 is actually using the same emulator as 360, but the emulation team is fixing bugs and performance issues are improved with the brute force power of X1.

If you really wanted to explore the OG Xbox library, get a OG Xbox. They're still easy to find and pretty cheap online. If you wanna dabble in the some of the best OG Xbox with improved visuals and performance, hopefully more games will be added in 2019, a X1 is great. I generally avoided the 360's emulation because it was bad.

Anyhow, my main point was mini consoles are getting a lot of hype at the moment. If MS wanted to jump in that in some way, just use the X1 to make a tribute OG Xbox. People would also love a compilation of notable Xbox games in a single disc or digital purchase. It will be 20 years in 2021 I believe.

wait... I've played a ton of original Xbox games on a X360 and with a few exceptions they play perfectly for the most part, the titles where I have seen issues at times is audio syncing to cutscenes... which in the original xbox games that I know and want to play still I either know them off or can watch them on youtube if the cutscene is what I want to see, but gameplay wise is fine.... except for marvel vs capcom 2, that game is tragic lol, dunno why it even allows the game to boot up since the sprites are mangled completely and gameplay is far too slow, but that's the outstanding game from the ones of my collection I've played.

Also you say that MS isn't making X360s anymore... are you suggesting that system is hard to find? Here in Ireland you can get a x360 pre owned for €38 while a original Xbox would cost €45 which are both gonna be very much pre owned machines as you suggest getting a original Xbox but not a X360 as MS aren't making them, you know the OG xbox has been out of manufacture for some time right.

Unfortunately (at least for me), the draw of these "mini" consoles is the nostalgia factor. I don't really have nostalgia for the original Xbox despite it having some great games. With the original only garnering twenty something million in sales, I don't think it would be a huge success.

I believe having good games is more important than the nostalgia factor. Thats why we dont get as excited about the Genesis or Atari collections, the games arent as strong or have been released already too many times.

I dont think the people buying these mini devices are just old people wanting to play them again, if there is a good collection of games there people will be interested.

I dont think userbase in the past is the sole factor on potential sales. Especially when you consider Xbox consoles became more popular. More importantly, the PS1 Mini shows having a good device with a strong collection of sales is more important.

I've had a few too many bad experience with the 360's emulation. Enough to buy a OG Xbox and play games that way.

You missed my point about the 360 no longer being manufactured. That's why I'm suggesting using the X1S hardware.

Mostly because it's quality is not acceptable, it's worse than AT Games efforts.
Price wasn't the issue.

The list of games is also hilariously bad.

You know you have dropped the ball when the NES Classic can emulate PS1 games better than the Playstation Classic.

PS1 also doesn't have that much of a nostalgia factor. It was my first self bought console, yet I don't have great memories of the 3D games on it apart from MGS and Wipeout 2097. A PS2 mini would do a lot better. I still have one hooked up yet it's a hassle with them old inputs, wired controllers and top loading discs.

But we don't really know how well a PS1 Mini could have sold because the one we got sucks.

Hence, a crappy PS2 Mini would struggle as well.

The PS1 Mini just fails at almost everything. Amazing Sony let this happen. But like I said before, I can excuse the games selected but using slower PAL games and poor performance is what I cant accept.

Actually expected better of Sony. But that is okay. Saves me some money I guess.
The only praise I can give it... Is the design of the plastic shell. Everything else... From the choice of SoC, the controllers, the emulation quality, the choice of games... Bad form.

Mr Puggsly said:

I agree OG Xbox emualtion needs more games on X1. But I really feel only like ~100 games at best matter. And much if that is definitely feasible to acquire given what MS has been able to do with 360 games.

It will come in time. - I actually thought Microsoft was going to port it's OG Xbox emulator to Xbox One at some point as all the hard work was already done, but I guess licensing has changed since the Xbox 360 days... I actually thought Microsoft did a fantastic job on emulating OG Xbox games on the 360, it was one of the reasons I bought the 360, so emulating the Xbox 360 emulator on the Xbox One I would have been fine with. Haha

On the flip side, it allows Microsoft to go back and look at where it's emulation efforts fell short and clean things up.

Mr Puggsly said:

I'm not just talking about using the X1 internals, it would be a X1 with OG Xbox shell essentially. That way you get a device that does significantly more than play some OG Xbox games. It already emulates OG games really well, it improves them for HD televisions and now all we need if more games supported.

Well. I would rather a classic console in the traditional sense, the Xbox One S internals are pretty overkill for OG Xbox emulation, so cost cutting can be done.
...Heck, in some aspects it's overkill for Xbox 360 emulation... But with cutbacks they could increase CPU and GPU clocks to fix up where the Xbox One S falls short.

There is a ton of nostalgia. I have played my SNES Classic to death. - And once you hack these devices, they get even better.

Any classic Xbox would need to push Halo and Fable though, without it... It would be derided I think. And fair enough.

I would have personally still purchased it even with a poor selection of games... I would have simply loaded in my favorite games (Mostly 2D affairs) once the console got cracked open.
The issue however is that the emulator and chipset is so poor, that it makes even that prospect fairly useless.

I have the Atari and Genesis "HD Classics". - They are fine for what they are... And I would even make the assertion that are even better than Sony's efforts, even with all the bloatware.
AT Games obviously sold a few and made a good profit to release 8-9 iterations as well.

Yeah. The Xbox 360's chipset would be to expensive to manufacture these days, better off with ARM or a semi-custom AMD design.
The Xbox One S is good, but I feel it sits a notch higher on the pricing spectrum for it to be in the reach for the nostalgic gamer.

No, they can't get away with a higher price by adding other stuff because that goes against the point of these classic systems. They are meant to be impulse purchases for people with nostalgia, adding in other features that people dont want does nothing but jack up the price.

These are not just impulse purchase items. I mean $80-$100 is a good chunk of change to play old games. So they need to have appealing games to justify it.

You seem to think a X1S should be priced competitively with low spec box that just plays some built in retro games? Not gonna happen. Again, I am really suggesting a special edition X1S.

Sub-$100 is absolutely impulse purchase range for the average working adult in first world countries.

I do not think that and I have no idea how you came to that conclusion. I'm saying your idea will not work for the people that these classic systems cater to, which is nostalgic lapsed gamers.

Lapsed gamers are people who played games growing up but for one reason or another very seldomly play games (or quit altogether) as an adult. Many of these people still have a soft spot for the games of their childhood/teen years and will buy a cheap device to play a dozen or so of these old games they loved.

Since these people are not gamers anymore, the ability to play current generation games does not really do much, if anything, to add value so a $200 X1S that plays today's $60 games will not be as enticing as a $100 Xbox Classic with 20 pre-installed games.

With that said, I dont think a special edition X1S like you suggest is a bad idea, just that it shouldn't be used to replace classic consoles. Both options would be ideal.
