Yeah, that's basically the endgame of laissez-faire capitalism: Companies getting to big to be opposed by anyone apart from other supercorps.

No, I think that's the fear of it. Not the goal.

No, the reality. What do you think that Too Big To Fail comes from? That's the point ll the corps want to achieve because from that point on, they can basically do as they please.

Yes. They don't have to use the platform sooooo, bye bye.

The best case scenario is the abuse of major platforms is going to help competitors thrive.

But when we see major domain provider, credit card companies, Paypal, and other companies that arguably have some sort of monopoly refusing to work with people. That's when we have a real problem and it does happen. Again, they didn't pull this shit when they were creating their platform, only after they thrived and crushed competitors.

Great way to play a victim. The right has Fox News and many, MANY contributors on CNN and MSNBC are right-wingers but they are the biggest whiners whenever they don't get their way. Do you agree or not that an account on a privately owned website should be shut down if it breaks the terms of that account?

Sam Harris never had to worry about money in his entire life he was pretty much born with a silver spoon in his mouth. So him having a patreon account to being with was completely unnecessary.

What's your point though?

I mean I can think of a lot of rich people who technically don't need to make another dollar. Like pretty much anybody who has been a successful musician, athlete, or actor for years.

If he's willing to close his account to make a point, good for him. Personally I support a few people on Patreon and I'm going to use alternatives when available.

My point is right there in plain English.  Harris never needed a additional revenue stream in his entire life so there was never a reason for him to start a patreon account.  Patreon accounts are meant for people that don't make enough money through their regular jobs or for people that don't make enough money from what they do for a living not for people that already have more then enough money.

I don't buy his argument for one second. These sites cancel accounts everyday that violates their terms and services, likely both right and left leaning accounts. But you mostly see the snowflakes on the right, same as what happened on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube... oh wait, Harris didn't end his account at any of those massive social networks. Go figure....

Wow, people actually believe we live in a free market? Boy, that's laughable. If we lived in a free market, big companies wouldn't be able to lobby the government to make two sets of rules. One for them. And one for their competition. These big corporations are protected, and probably get certain breaks, for being an "open platform." Those same protections are not given to up and comers. And in a free market, we don't have bailouts because a company "is too big to fail." That's a Socialist idea. In a true free market, if that company couldn't cut it, either by evolving with the market or cutting spending, they would go under and another company would take their place. That is a true free market. Not one where the government meddles with you pretty much every step of the way.

@ OP

I'm pulling my support from Patreon, as well. They were just looking for any excuse to take Sargon off. So, they finally found a video from months back, on a channel that wasn't his, and only had a few thousand views, where he said that racists were the actual "niggers." The truth is, there are probably tons of people on Patreon that use that word in their videos, but I guess they are from a protected class.

What did Sargon of Akkad do to get himself removed?

No, you live in a mixed economy, just like most other countries. A completely free market works just as bad as a completely socialist system. But I don't see what that has to do with this case? Or is your argument that, because you don't have a completely free market, the government should force private entities to accept account that violates their terms?

While I would take any opportunity to jump at the terrible terrible company that is Patreon it all seems a bit shady to me. I need to know who those banned accounts are and what they did. If they were peddling dangerous ideas or misinformation I might even support that decision.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Sam Harris is probably the furthest from right wing in the bunch, so for him to take the first move and go as far as closing his account is pretty cool to see.

Nothing other than being right winged and the Pateron not wanting him to have a platform to spread his opinion.
