Will XBOX One outsell the SNES?

Yes 55 51.89%

No 51 48.11%

Total:106

Depends. Are we counting sales of the SNES Mini too? =P

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

No way MS does that. They don't have the pull to force devs to continue to develop on the outdated HW for next gen. Even if they forced the issue by saying they must do it or they can't publish on the XB2, many devs would just refuse.

As for the NES, I doubt XBO goes much past 55M, let alone 60M.

360/PS3 were supported until late 2015. Almost all third-party games were coming to both of these consoles. The same thing will happen with XB1/PS4. Even base consoles will be supported until 2022 it seems. Probably even later games would still be coming if the hardware of PS4/XB1 will allow to run such games. It was way harder to support Gen 7 and Gen 8 consoles simultaneously because Gen 7 consoles were completely different in terms of hardware. Gen 9 will 100% be almost identical to Gen 8 which means that cross-get support would be easier.

But yeah I agree with something around 55m LT consoles sold if the support stops shortly after the next console is released.

Not if SNES mini's are counting towards the SNES total lol.

XBOX One has now reportedly passed the 40 million mark but I'm still not convinced it has another 10 million left in it. Remember that so far in 2018 the XBone has sold 4-5 million units and that will probably decline in 2019.
Thoughts?

It should do another ~2.5 million this year (did ~3 million last 6 weeks of 2017) which would put it at 42.5 million lifetime and ~7 million for the year.

2019 will likely see a moderate decline like you said so maybe 5 million putting it at 47.5 million.

2020 and onward should easily do another 2.5 million so passing 50 million should happen.

I agree with the first part, its looking like it will do 7+ million this year.

New consoles are likely going to be announced in 2019, but how MS positions the X1 also matters. I really think MS is going to extend the life of X1 and X1X into the 9th gen to bolster their subscription services and last gen consoles tend to stay relevant for a few years.

I feel like the 9th gen consoles need to be $499 to be a significant upgrade over the mid gen upgrades. I'm talking modern CPUs much more capable of 60 fps, maybe ~10TF GPU and 24-32GB of RAM. That's what we need for a significant improvement over the X1X. However, the X1X could still be a viable way to play 9th gen games at a lower price.

Its worth noting the 360 and PS3 had good sales in 2012 even though new consoles were announced. There was a big decline in 2013 of course but still pretty good. Things could be different this time depending on prices of PS4 Pro/Xbox One X vs 9th gen prices. 8th gen consoles will still get notable support for a few years into the 9th gen regardless.

X1 passing SNES is basically guaranteed at this rate. How much above that is a matter of what MS does with X1 in the future.

Easily. Keep in mind they have 3 big announcements due out in 2019 in Crackdown 3, Ori 2 and Gears 5 plus games like Battletoads and afew other smaller titles that will surely interests none Xbox owners. Next year is going to be big for Xbox and if games like Halo Infinite becomes crossplay than i can see it doing well over 50m.

Xbox One is currently tracking at about 42-43 million ltd and only sold 54k units last week. I still don't think that it passing the SNES is a given, especially if Microsoft unveil new hardware at E3 as they are rumored to do....

Only selling 50,000 units per week, I say no.

49.1M to beat, which is just 6M ahead. By now, unless the successor to the XBO will release this year, I don't see how it could not outsell the SNES anymore. However, next year, I expect Wii U-like sales, and even this year not too much above it.

X1 will probably sell another 4-5 million units this year. That would put it at 46-47 million.

So that would mean only a few million more sales needed between 2020 and the end of production. I'm not absolutely confident X1 will surpass SNES, but I'm sure MS could make it happen if that was really a goal.
