Forums - Sales Discussion - Global Hardware 22 September 2018

I'm assuming the increase of PS4 sales has everything to do with Spider-Man. Runaway success and word of mouth. Good reviews too. But it's also a little crazy that it this week was. Shadow of the Tomb Raider week and Microsoft has Marketing Rights to it.

Yep. They are stretching that gap. And delivering large volume, high velocity streams of software.

It's going to be an interesting fight between Switch and PS4 to see who takes the 2018 crown.

I don't see how. The PS4 i currently around 2M ahead of the switch in 2018 so far. The switch will need PS4 sales to pretty much grind to a halt over the next 2 months to stand a chance.

And let's not forget the ps4 will keep stretching the lead with big games like bo4 and rdr2 coming out. At least until Nintendo finally get their big games out. First one mid November i think?

Not really, using the numbers from the YoY comparison thread shows this.

PS4

As of week 13 down ~4% YoY

As of week 26 down ~11% YoY

As of week 38 down ~16% YoY

NSW

As of week 13 up ~24% YoY

As of week 26 up ~23% YoY

As of week 38 up ~23 YoY

As the year has gone on PS4 sales have been trending downward from last year while NSW has held very stable YoY gains. Assuming this trend continues than PS4 could very well be down ~20% by the end of the year putting it at ~16.2m and if NSW remains up 23-24% it's been all year than it will end around ~16.2m as well.

Overall PS4 and NSW sales should be very close at the end of the year, I would say within 1 million of each other.

So the Switch is currently at 7,5 millions sold this year, and there is still 7 weeks before Pokémon/Smash/New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, so we can predict it will be around 8,7/9 by the third week of november, and then, if it sells around 7/8 millions from Pokémon to new year, sales will be around 16-17 millions. And around 3 millions from January to March, which would make it around 20 millions. Minus the (I suppose) 2.5 millions sold from january to march 2018, sales would be around 18 millions, which fall short from the 20 millions Nintendo expects to sell.

But in any case, 30 millions LTD by the end of the year doesn't seem too unrealistic.

You are comparing shipped vs sold.

Indeed, but they're related, unless there is an extra +2 millions gap between shipped and sold, which usually is less (around 1/1.5 million. That's why I said that if Nintendo sells 18 millions by the end of march, they would fall short from the 20 millions Nintendo expect to -my bad- ship.

Those EU numbers keeping PS4 boosted. Like I always say, EU is Sony country. They aint ever leaving Sony's side. One place Nintendo nor Microsoft will ever gain control of.

Honestly Im even surprised that Xbox does 1/3 or 1/4th of the PS4 sales in europe.
Maybe its just my small circle, but xbox isnt really something people I know own.

Its not quite this bad in europe..... But like on the street if you asked random people, Im sure you would get this responce from some of them.

If the population of Japan was equal to Europe's population, Japan would be doing crazy numbers.

aye, Switch numbers would be in the 100k+ in Japan like EU for Sony it looks like

Japan = 127m
Europe = 742m
USA = 326m

If there was like 6 times as many japanese consumers as there are now.... they would be leading the sales in terms of hardware every week.

That population includes Russia (140m) and Turkey (80m) and I don't believe those nations are included in the 'Europe' table seen here, though I could be wrong.

The European Union has around 500m population which is typically what people are referring to by Europe.

Because people were talking about it, this is what this week would look like if Japan had the population of Europe:

Thank you for posting this.  This shows that per capita, there are a lot more gamers in Japan than the rest of the world.  This is actually further confirmation about everything else I've heard about Japan, which is just that gaming is much more a part of their culture than it is elsewhere.  They also tend to have a disproportionate number of game developers just because gaming is part of the Japanese mindset.

Oh, this is so beautiful. 3DS competes with XBox, PS4 and Switch get great boosts and Vita has life in it. Only MS is unhappy. Oh well, at least in that graph Xbox in Japan sells more than Vita outside of Japan.
