Forums - Politics Discussion - US Medicare For All Bill as good as dead now?

As a note, I say "far left" but they aren't really, this is only relative to American politics (which are a little mixed up, IMO =P).

So Center-Left, then.

The Medicare for All movement is as strong as it ever has been. Public support is consistently raising. It is in 1000 times better position than it was in 2016. The 2020 Dem frontrunners have been either vocally supportive of MFA or have been edging closer to it.

So, even after the Third Way/centrists Dems bungled the general election it is still looking quite positive for the future of US public healthcare.

I think you're missing the OP's point. Any bill that passes will be struck down as unconstitutional with a conservative supreme court.

Under what grounds? If the court cannot legally defend its claim of unconstitutionality then they will be impeached by Congress. Checks and balances and all that. No single branch of government is infallible.

The Left in US politics is about equivalent to the Right in Australian politics (who happily support UHC), it's relative

The Center is relative as each countries perceived centre is different

There a dozens of arguments that the court can make. If they can get away with Citizens United they can get away with an argument against Medicare for All.

And sorry, without 2/3rds of the Senate any impeachment is going to go nowhere.

One country has to bite the bullet on private medical care so we get innovation and I'm glad it isn't China. Sucks for you Americans but it's a sacrifice that I for one am respectful of as we'll never get any inovation in the future if the global health market goes free.

Thank you!  I swear, it seems like no one else realizes that.

It's true the US has very good research around serious diseases as more people in the US need them per capita than most other countries, outcomes with UHC systems in other countries is that more people can afford to see their Doctor regularly which results in better overall prevention and life expectancy, this allows for a greater focus on prevention than late disease outcomes as in the US

Hope so. Quality of healthcare would go down for the top 1%. There's a reason billionaires come to the US for their treatments from around the world.

Nah, if your rich you don't have to come to the US to get top notch health care you can hire your own top notch private doctors to take care of you.  As a whole the US health care system isn't even that good.  Its great if you live in a rich neighborhood where everyone has health insurance or is rich enough that they can afford any kind of procedure without going bankrupt but it can be very sup par if you live in a poor area, rural area or a poor state like Mississippi or Alabama.  The US health care system never even came close to making it into top ten overall.  Its not very innovative either the last great US health care innovation was probably the polio vaccine and that was publicly funded.  Private health care pretty much came up with jack shit since it primary function is to be profitable and not to innovate.

I don't get it. Why would innovation stop?

It wouldn't on top of all that the US health care system isn't even that innovative.

I've asked you this before, do you have a source for that claim?

Sure

1.4 Million Americans Will Go Abroad for Medical Care This Year. Should You?

Ha, nice one there is way more Americans going overseas to get more affordable health care then rich or even semi rich people going to the US for medical care.
